Do you have potato croquettes on Xmas Dinner?

Growing up in the 70s and 80s (in NE England) my family always had potato croquettes (as well as roasties) on our Xmas dinner, and so did my DH's family (in Yorkshire). We didn't have them at any other time of year, so I'm guessing it must have been inspired by a succesful pre-Xmas advertising campaign when they were a relatively new product. We still have them every year now, so we're passing on the tradition to our kids. Anyone else?

Says who? They go beautifully with any roast 😁

WhichIsItWendy · 24/12/2023 15:16

I've never heard of that (SE). But before meeting my husband I hadn't heard of mash with a roast dinner either.

For us, we'll be sticking to roast potatoes and then having a carrot and swede mash. I'm always so stuffed I'm in pain after Christmas dinner, this year, I'm going to try to eat less!

Attictroll · 24/12/2023 15:31

No but now I want them...SE here.

No never! Would lower the tone (sorry!).

The fact that Waitrose sells them fresh suggests not...

No, not had potato croquettes here - we were traditional roasties all the way. We're adding to it by having truffle mash as well this year, as we're doing a sirloin of beef.

TheChosenTwo · 24/12/2023 16:01

I’ve never heard of them so I’m going to say no we don’t! Only ever roast potatoes for a roast, clue’s in the name 😂😂
(I did once go to a relatives up north who served mash and roast potatoes with a roast, it was bizarre and not an experience I’ve been keen to replicate since!)

Piffpaffpoff · 24/12/2023 16:12

Oh yes - homemade with bright orange breadcrumbs. Alongside mash and roast. The only meal of the year where there are 3 types of tatties. E Scotland.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 24/12/2023 16:14

No, I'm not a great fan of breadcrumbed things.

MrsMitford3 · 24/12/2023 16:15

Roasties and mash here-with extra for Boxing Day bubble and squeak!

Psychoticbreak · 24/12/2023 16:30

I am Irish and LOVE spuds. Any way shape or form but croquettes make me quesy. My kids have never even tasted them cos I have never bought them. Hated them as a kid. So no they are no feature of any dinner in this house.

Nonentity2023 · 24/12/2023 16:31

Roast tatties and mashed tatties with Christmas dinner when I was growing up here in Scotland.

GreySantaRabbit · 24/12/2023 16:32

We do roasties, mash and plain boiled tates with Christmas dinner. Plus as many sprouts as we can (Bubble and Squeak on Boxing Day) 😁

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/12/2023 16:33

Child of the 70s from the NE here and yes it was a staple. I’d totally forgotten until now.

IhateHPSDeaneCnt · 24/12/2023 16:44

It wasn't a Christmas dinner but Ex's grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary held in their favourite local village pub. MIL and two uncles were meant to pay for dinner. This included my BIL SIL plus myself and ex however a few more distant relatives turned up so there was lots of stage whispered mutterings. Ex and I joined the conversation and offered to cover the booze - sigh - you would think that what caused issues (apart from my bank account) but the pub had only catered for the booked diners. Fair enough. So they started to bring out (Iceland) potato croquettes for the interlopers because they didn't have enough roast potatoes. All hell broke loose - with people wanting croquettes too. I definitely had my flabber gasted that day.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 24/12/2023 16:48

No, actual mash along with roast potatoes at DH insistence with the Christmas roast. We never have turkey though as I don't like it. We rotate through pheasant, lamb, beef & chicken. This year it's pheasant.

I sometimes do croquettes with a roast throughout the year.

We have yorkshires with every roast, always homemade though as frozen ones take up too much freezer space (we're a family of 7).

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/12/2023 16:51

Never heard of this - DDad from NE, DM from S coast - but now I am wondering 1- if my Tesco local is open, and 2- if they have any.

theduchessofspork · 24/12/2023 16:53

Never heard of that!

I love a croquette - but I love roasties more than anything so wouldn’t want any other potato getting in the way of them

margotrose · 24/12/2023 16:53

No, but I haven't had a potato croquette for years and really fancy one now Grin

Yeah I do find mash with a roast strange and much as I love potatoes roasties plus parsnips is enough starch

GellerYeller · 24/12/2023 17:02

We used to have them at Christmas in the 80s. With roasties of course. Mum sometimes would add Duchess Potatoes too. Big carb fan, my mum.

Whu · 24/12/2023 17:18

Yep we often do but not this year.
I’m doing roasties, mash and dauphinoise this time. We like potatoes!!

Hyacinth Bucket is alive and well 🤣. Saddo.

I know! If I could I would add in mash and chips as well 😅

NotARealWookiie · 24/12/2023 17:33

No but we do have steak and croquettes for breakfast on Xmas eve!

Wow, that sounds like the best breakfast ever, what a fab idea 😋

OwlWeiwei · 24/12/2023 17:40

No, the only time I ever had them was in a youth hostel in Switzerland when I was about 10 years old. I thought they were the height of Swiss culinary sophistication. They were delicious, so I'm not sure why I've never had them in the fifty years since then!

WeaselCheeks · 24/12/2023 17:45

Always had croquettes along with roasties and mash (and Yorkshire pudding, huzzah for carbs!) on Christmas dinners growing up! I always do croquettes, but I forgo the regular mash for sweet potato/carrot.

My mom was utterly mental though, she used to do a joint of roast beef or pork, as well as a chicken (she didn't like turkey).
