Aghhh - Tesco substitutions

I know - I should have expected it. Did my online Christmas shop as soon as the slots opened. It’s coming tonight.

unavailable with no substitutes -

mince pies, custard, brandy cream, Parma ham, raspberries, smoked salmon, just roll cinnamon swirls.

know I have to go out again after doing the marks and Spencer shop at 8am.

ordering system sucks. How can Tescos have run out of all these popular Christmas foods on 23rd December!!!!!

the rage I feel seems disproportionate 😂😂

The delivery vans for Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons and Asda were in my street in force on Thursday and yesterday. I guess a lot of people ordered earlier to 'ensure' they got their full order.

Bellyblueboy · 23/12/2023 12:24

I am now in the queue in the ‘little’ Tescos and they have everything that was unavailable!!!! Ah well / sure I would only be home wrapping. Presents and panic cleaning

My Tesco one is coming later today. Had receipt through and nothing unavailable but 19 substitutions. Best one though is that I ordered a 250g pack of smoked salmon and they've substituted it with a whole side of salmon!

Bellyblueboy · 23/12/2023 12:31

Wow that was lucky. My champagne wasn’t available and the substitute was a Tesco own brand! Though I might get an upgrade

I had 7 substitutions but they are all reasonable. Double of smaller packs of stuff, back bacon instead of streaky, different type of white bread, different type of gravy- all fine.
1 unavailable was potatoes! This was with allowing substitutions!!! How on earth can a huge Tesco run out of potatoes 2 days before Christmas??

Just got back from our local Co -op to get the stuff I needed. The shelves were almost empty- looked like a plague of locusts had been through it!

Bettyscakes · 23/12/2023 12:40

I feel lucky only one substitute of a larger pack of pop than the one I ordered :)

GettingStuffed · 23/12/2023 12:42

I wouldn't worry about not having Tesco mince pies, they're dire this year, only the crumble topped ones are edible. The others have too much dry pastry.

10ChocolateSprouts · 23/12/2023 12:46

I ordered two 350g bars of Galaxy for my nieces as an extra treat.

Sainsbury's sent ten bags of chocolate sprouts.

If I peeled all the sprouts in the 10 x 75g bags and melted them down, I would have the same amount of chocolate, I suppose...

KnittedCardi · 23/12/2023 12:47

I didn't get my Waitrose Pigs in Blankets. They subbed for essential cocktail sausages which are really dire, so I declined. Going out later to find the elusive pigs.

Bippertyboo2 · 23/12/2023 12:49

I ordered a pack of gluten free ready rolled pastry which Morrisons substituted with a block of vegan butter!

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 23/12/2023 13:08

Tesco champagnes ok,the vintage ones lovely.

Ihateslugs · 23/12/2023 13:12

I tend to order my Christmas food a few days early, the 20th this year, as nothing I was getting needed to be eaten straight away - my sister orders fresh meat etc from butcher and collected this morning. I was pleased to get everything I ordered with no substitutions but I did notice that there were no mince pies available. I bought mine a week or so ago.

I would be too worried to order this close to Christmas as I’m unable to walk around shops due to very bad arthritis so if it can’t be delivered I have to do without! When my children were young I did have to brave the shops close to Christmas Day as I did not have the room to store the huge quantities of food they are when off school! I tried to be first in the queue when the shops opened to whiz round before it got too busy.

Yes same here I couldn't believe it, 1 sub and it was a big tub of heroes instead of a 290g box, I wanted the tub in the first place but it was unavailable last night when I tried to add it so I actually ended up with what I wanted!

PrimalOwl10 · 23/12/2023 13:15

Tbh if you want all your items you need to go into the store and earlier. The dot.coms don't have priority over stock on the shop floor, it's a case of first come, first serve. Staff are constantly restocking the shelves. I think we all forget all the hardwork they all do behind the scenes. My parents are both disabled and shop at smaller stores to get their items or me and my brother help.

lucysmam · 23/12/2023 13:15

I ordered my Tesco BIG SHOP for Weds evening as it was the only suitable time left by the time I remembered to do it. Tbf to them, there were 2 acceptable subs & whoever picked it selected dates from the 28th onwards for the fresh stuff (or maybe they were all dated fairly well in future).

I have however, been randomly remembering things I forgot to go back and edit onto it -

Cereal on Thurs (dd1 went to Lidl)
Nibbley food dd2 will eat (went to Sainsbury's yesterday)
Mayo today - someone will nip to Lidl

Wonder what I'll remember tomorrow 🤔🙄

Dynamoat · 23/12/2023 13:17

You dodged a bullet with the cinnamon swirls, they've changed them and now you have to smear the cinnamon paste yourself and then they're all dry horrible once baked.

tinatsarina · 23/12/2023 13:20

Love these threads the substitutions are so strange sometimes. Mine was Asda this year, ordered a sparkling wine to make mimosa/bucks fizz Christmas morning substituted with a Chardonnay, I'll still drink it

MigGirl · 23/12/2023 13:21

What I don't get is I did my Christmas shop with Tesco no bread sauce at all. So had to pop to Sainburys they had loads. How can they run out of Christmas food before Christmas.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 23/12/2023 13:22

I've had 5 substitutions and they are just different brands so am accepting them all.

A chutney was unavailable but I'm doing without.

unvillage · 23/12/2023 13:23

I was actually fine this year, very reasonable substitutions, like a 900g box of crackers instead of 450g. And a more expensive squirty cream! No brioche bread and butter pudding, that was the only disappointment, but it wouldn't have fit in the fridge anyway.

grayhairdontcare · 23/12/2023 13:42

Tesco came Thursday. No subs and the only unavailable was foil.

Glittertwins · 23/12/2023 13:46

I ordered a bottle of vodka as it was on offer. They didn't have the standard 70cl size so gave me a litre version instead which was somehow £4 cheaper than the one I asked for and half its normal price. I am definitely not complaining!!!

Luckyduc · 23/12/2023 13:50

If you've got a car then why not just go food shopping basically wasted all that time online searching items anyway. Booking in advance is pointless.
