Could the ground just swallow me up now please?!

I just want the ground to swallow me up.. I feel like a right pillock! 🤦🏼‍♀️
So I went for an interview this morning and they said they would ring this afternoon to let me know the outcome.
My phone rings and I answer, they offer me the job. I'm feeling absolutely over the moon as I never thought I had a chance after the interview, and getting this (a) job means absolutely everything to me. As this means we can now look forward to moving house with me on the mortgage and we no longer have to rely on my DHs wage, etc.
I'm saying all my thank yous and he's explaining to me what happens next, etc....
I then end the conversation with.. "love you bye"
LOVE YOUU BYEE!! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️😩😩😩
Cue immediate hand slap to my forehead "what a dickhead!" "What did you say that for"
I'm hoping that because I was saying the word lovely alot in our conversation, that he did actually mistake my love yous for lovely bye... please im praying!! 🤦🏼‍♀️
🤣🤣🤣

Ha ha! Brilliant! I bet he just smiled as he hung up and got on with his day. Don’t worry about it!

bakewellbride · 22/12/2023 21:37

Hilarious 🤣

NoisyDachshunddd · 22/12/2023 21:41

My boss in my first career job did this to me the other way round (when offering the job). He was a lovely fella and I never thought badly of him. He actually did it again a few months later as well. He just had a really big family (5 teen kids, wife, many siblings, etc) and this was how he usually ended phone convos. No harm done. And congrats on the job!

C1N1C · 22/12/2023 21:42

You probably made his day! And I bet you could max-out a whole MN past on people who have accidentally said I love you, or called someone mum or dad accidentally... it happens :)

Singleandproud · 22/12/2023 21:44

It always makes me smile when people say this. It means they have a loving family and that's how they normally end their convos, I think it's a nice slipup I wouldn't think anything else of it.

Congratulations though, what a fab way to start the new year!

WmFnKdSg1234 · 22/12/2023 21:45

What fantastic news, well done and congratulations @BigBrothersLittleSistee !

I think "lovely bye" is probably what he heard 😂

CheerfulBunny · 22/12/2023 21:45

I said it to the vicar when shaking hands and leaving church when I was a kid. I think we've all done it at some point! I bet it made them smile 😁

PuddingWitch · 22/12/2023 21:46

I'd be happy to have you on the team you sound great! Congrats on the new job Xmas Smile

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 22/12/2023 21:59

Aww thank you all for the lovely replies.. its made me feel abit better about the situation.

Although I am also considering not taking up the job offer out of embarrassment 🤦🏼‍♀️🫠🤣

😂😂😂 this post made my night!!! Congratulations OP!!

Singleandproud · 22/12/2023 22:04

If it makes you feel any better I still remember being age 16, sat at the back of a full but silent classroom finishing some geography work and asking the teacher a question and starting it "Dad....." I then went back to teach at my old school and every time I taught in that room it all came flooding back. I in return was called 'mum' by lots of students

Curlymam88 · 22/12/2023 22:06

I once said 'love you' instead of 'thank you' to the school crossing guy at my daughters school 😩

InSpainTheRain · 22/12/2023 22:08

Ha ha thats brilliant! To make you feel better... My DH has a fairly unusual name, but one of the managers who reports to me also has the same name. I recently whatsapped the manager telling him I was overdrawn so I borrowed from our joint account as I was too drunk to figure out how to get money out my savings account. Was mortified when I realised!

QS90 · 22/12/2023 22:15

I've throw-away told both a boss and a recruitment consultant I loved them 😶Both times at the end of the call "So you'll get that spreadsheet over by tomorrow" "yeah no problem" "bye then, see you in the office later" "yes, see you then. Love you, bye!" CRINGE 😂It was fine though, we just never spoke of it again.

LaughingCat · 22/12/2023 22:17

HAAAAA!!! Done this so many times! Even on air to a radio DJ after a local radio competition phone in (I still can’t even, with that). Dollars to donuts, the person you’ve said it to has done it before as well and will have chuckled in empathetic, commiserating laughter after you put the phone down.

Brilliant 😂

Towerofsong · 22/12/2023 22:19

I had a young male colleague say 'love you' at the end of a call. I didn't even notice, but he sent me a message 3 minutes later apologising and saying it was an accident because his mum was staying with him and so he'd been saying it more.😂

JamSandle · 22/12/2023 22:20

Woohoo congratulations!

You made a cute and endearing faux pas so don't worry about it.

theduchessofspork · 22/12/2023 22:33

Fantastic!

Don’t worry about it, I quite frequently say random Happy Birthdays to people when they wish me one (it’s not their birthday)

gillefc82 · 22/12/2023 22:35

I’ve accidentally added kisses to emails to colleagues etc. Most embarrassing didn’t involve something I said and wasn’t an interview.

I visited a regional office for a meeting with some people I had never previously met. There was some changing around of the meeting rooms, so I first knocked on the door for the meeting room on the original invite and stuck my head in. The two men in there explained the rooms had been swapped and pointed me to the right room. I thanked them, and as I turned to leave I somehow tripped over my own feet and then fell out of the door, landing flat on my back in the corridor outside.

I might possibly have got away with it but of course the meeting rooms were fully glass fronted so the men got a front row seat to my clumsy accident!

I was praying they would just ignore it, so I might be able to exit with a modicum of my dignity intact. But as I’m peeling myself off the floor one of them opens the door to ask if I’m ok and if I need help getting up. I was mortified and avoided visiting that office for about 6 years just in case I ever bumped into them and they recognised me.

I just knew for a fact that they would have headed back to their desks and told everyone about what happened with the clumsy woman in the meeting room. It’s what I would have done in their place but it still makes me cringe when I think of it!

blackpanth · 22/12/2023 22:40

🤣🤣 glad you got the job! X

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/12/2023 22:45

Don't worry about it one jot OP. I work in HR, it's always makes me smile when someone is a bit excited upon receiving a job offer.

He probably just had a little chuckle and moved on. Don't even dream about turning it down. In a couple of years you could be colleagues who laugh about this. 😀

Congratulations!

HarrietofFire · 22/12/2023 22:50

I've been on the receiving end of accidental 'love you's' in my job. It's great. makes me smile and makes me like that person even more. Well done OP! Enjoy the job.

SkaneTos · 22/12/2023 22:53

He probably just thought it was funny!
Congratulations on your new job, OP!

LightSpeeds · 22/12/2023 23:42

Fab 😂😂

BigBrothersLittleSistee · 23/12/2023 06:46

Some funny stories here, and im also subject to calling my teacher "mum" in secondary school, in my defence we did actually have to call the female teachers "ma'am", so i was close 🤣
I'm definitely going to take the job offer ...
Here's hoping he has an amazing Christmas and forgets all about it for when I start in the new year 🫠
