Mad Friday. Is this Scottish?

I'm 41 and since I was a child mad Friday has been HUGE here.

Most people break up for Christmas, the pubs busiest night of the year by a mile.

I was a court solicitor for many years and tonight was the worst night to be duty. Tomorrow's custody court is a nightmare.

Is the last Friday before Christmas known as this everywhere. DH and nephews and friends all out tonight.

Was just thinking about it.

Ah great. I was chatting to a friend and she said what? She's Lancaster's way.

I thought it wasn't just here.

Your Lancaster friend isn't fully familiar with Lancaster culture if she doesn't know what Mad Friday is.

but them days are a fond memory for me currently, with a 6 & 4 year old. I spent most of tonight at a childrens christmas disco!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/12/2023 21:59

We called it Black Friday in Wales when I used to go out 15 odd years ago, not sure if it’s still called that now with the American Black Friday thanksgiving sales now being a thing over here.

Edinvillian · 22/12/2023 22:01

I'm in Moray, those under 40 call it Mad Friday, those over 40 call it piece bag Friday or piece bagger (i.e. you go out straight from work so still have your lunch bag with you 😂)

Cas112 · 22/12/2023 22:02

North west and we call it mad Friday.. the last Friday before Christmas

Everyone goes out getting p*ssed

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/12/2023 22:02

Some info about the night here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(partying)

Apparently the name largely used by the press changed from Black Friday to mad Friday in 2013 to avoid confusion with the American Black Friday sales.

It’s a thing here in Liverpool too, such a good night out when I was younger.

We call it black eye Friday here. North England

Teesside and black eye Friday here too, town where I work rammed when I came home - 90 minutes late because I was helping behind the bar 🍻

Brawsome · 22/12/2023 22:06

Daft Friday to me.

Gloaminggnome · 22/12/2023 22:08

It's Factory Friday in our bit of Devon. Complete and utter carnage. We had teetotal builders in last year and they finished a day early to have their Christmas meal out in peace.

Doggymummar · 22/12/2023 22:09

I'm from Humberside and never heard of it.

Tallisker · 22/12/2023 22:11

I feel for anyone working in pubs tonight

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/12/2023 22:14

Mad Friday here (NE Scotland) and agree with pp that when I was a bartender at uni it was the absolute best night to work!

Mojodojocasahaus · 22/12/2023 22:14

Rycbar · 22/12/2023 22:15

bannaba · 22/12/2023 22:15

Black eye Friday here down south, although I only heard it called this the past couple of years

stonkytonk11 · 22/12/2023 22:17

Yes, agree with others - mad/fiel Friday would have been last week as that would have been peak for Christmas parties/work events. Tonight likely to be pretty mad too though 😆
