This year has been full of ups and downs, I became a homeowner in March, lived through floods in September, (I live in Greece.) and have been on a bit of a roller coaster here there and everywhere, some days are great, other days are… Not so much. Anyway, I’m just tired and didn’t really feel like doing much in terms of decorating. I had some stuffed Santas on the stuffed grinch and I have bought some nice tableware, one is like a board and you have a star and a Christmas tree shaped plate. I’ve put a nutcracker doll on top of the fireplace and surrounded it with candles.

I don’t have a tree, and don’t think I’ll be getting one. I don’t know if there’s anything else small that I could do.

One wreath hung on the wall.
A small string of fairy lights straggled across a door
Some cards sellotaped to the edge of a shelf

That's it. Definitely not insta ready. It's just how it is this year. Hoping for better next year.
But we're all ok and actually quite cheerful. 😆

Me! We just haven't had any weekends in December where all 4 of us are free. I've put the light wreath on the front door, tablecloth on the table and that's it. Part of the reason is that all our decorations are in one massive box. Am thinking about diving them into 2 smaller ones with one for the tree and one for the house. Everything else is sorted and I've never felt so good and calm in the run up to Xmas. For that I have to thank the organised mum and her Christmas plan.

Hellokittymania · 20/12/2023 13:31

Glad I’m not the only one. I thought putting things up, like a tree, might help me to feel a little bit more at home, but I’m just too tired.

I'm sitting here contemplating whether to put up the tree.
Maybe I will, maybe I won't.

cezannesapple · 20/12/2023 13:36

I haven’t put up much this year. Just a wreath on the door and the usual fairy lights but nothing else.

OldTinHat · 20/12/2023 13:36

I've not put up any decorations. No point. I'm on my own, not expecting visitors. Christmas will be just another day imo.

ArchetypalBusyMum · 20/12/2023 13:37

Give yourself permission to be low key with your Xmas decs.
The best most important Xmas feeling is to be able to show you care to whoever you choose to do that with (that might even be just yourself! A friend of mine is in bliss as she is getting to be alone for the first time in years so she can do her Xmas day her way and not be dominated by her selfish mother).
Anything else is a pleasant bonus but not essential.
The last thing you should do is anything that exhausts you or overwhelms you as that detracts from the most important thing.

GalileoHumpkins · 20/12/2023 13:39

I have a few things dotted around, some small glitter trees and a few wooden things. No tree as the cat wouldn't leave it alone.

FourChimneys · 20/12/2023 13:40

A couple of wintery things but nothing explicitly for Christmas as it is not a festival I celebrate. So for me it is a happy choice.

Best wishes to those who are finding the season hard.

Britinme · 20/12/2023 13:58

One three foot high pre-lit tree. One string of fairy lights round the front door. That's it.

megletthesecond · 20/12/2023 14:02

Me. My potted tree hasn't come in from the garden yet. I don't see the point in wasting my time having a mad tidy and decorating it for it to just be me who sees it over Xmas then has to put it away. My teens will barely go into the living room over Xmas so it seems pointless.

whirlyhead · 20/12/2023 14:03

I recently moved house (and country) and have put up nothing Christmassy. Christmas isn't much of a thing here. I have no idea even where my Christmas decorations are, neither am I bothered.

I often didn't put them up in England either - just wasn't interested in doing so!

user1471538283 · 20/12/2023 14:24

Your decorations sound lovely! I moved house as well this year. I've put up a small twig like tree with some baubles and I've strung some lights up. It's very low key.

Last year it was just the lights and a minimalist metal small tree.

I spent years struggling with a massive tree which took hours to put up and take down. I just can't be bothered anymore and it's just more work.

I just want a nice dinner and a rest!

MaidOfSteel · 20/12/2023 14:31

We've put up a tree and have a wreath on the front door both that's it. We've never really bothered with anything else. We're not going for Instagram likes and prefer things simple.
Have a lovely Xmas!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 20/12/2023 14:39

Nope, haven’t done decorations since 2000. Do what you want ! So long as you are happy with it, that is all that really matters. Enjoy the break and hope next year improves for you.

LizzieBennetsBonnet · 20/12/2023 15:01

We haven't decorated for Christmas. I've been getting increasingly unbothered with Christmas and the last couple of years we haven't done anything. I got rid of the artificial tree and decorations several months ago. I used to find the tree cluttered the place up and was glad when it came down so I much prefer not putting it up in the first place.

akissbeforebed · 20/12/2023 15:03

I have an advent calendar. That's it.

ChickenJeffrey · 20/12/2023 15:07

We aren't putting any decorations up, I'm disabled and H has been working stupid hours so neither of us has the time or inclination. Also, we have about 1,000 cats, (OK. 5 but it can feel like more)

betterangels · 20/12/2023 15:14

akissbeforebed · 20/12/2023 15:03

I have an advent calendar. That's it.

Same. Every year.

Gnomegnomegnome · 20/12/2023 15:18

I put up the tree last night but that’s our norm.

LoreleiG · 20/12/2023 15:21

I have had years where decorations haven’t really happened to speak of and that is fine. Sometimes we just have too much shit going on!

EducatingArti · 20/12/2023 15:26

I don't think I will be putting a tree up this year. The door wreath will probably go on later this afternoon. Other than that, I have just put up Christmas cards.
I am away for a couple of nights over Christmas itself and although I love some of my tree decorations, it seem a lot of effort to put them up and have to put them away again when I'm not around on the day itself!

Notafanofchristmas · 20/12/2023 16:05

We only ever have a fake tree, with petty lacklustre poundshop decorations. Nothing else. It’s only because the children like it.

My mum used to go all out when I was a child. For weeks, the house was covered in tat, decorations hung from the ceiling (it was the 80s, we had those awful, 3d garlands hung from the corners of the room into the light fittings an all sorts). As a child, I hated it, it was so cluttered and messy. She died just before christmas when I was 12, my dad bless him, went to get all the crap down from the loft that he hated too. I told him that we didn’t have to bother anymore, I’d always hated them and we took it all to a charity shop and never decorated for christmas again.

Alovleyjacket · 20/12/2023 16:15

Don't, not interested in Christmas tack - we are really not that unusual amongst our friends.

TheCatfordCat · 20/12/2023 16:25

I've decorated quite a bit, but visiting my mum she's put up some tinsel around her big mirror, strung up her cards and... that's it.
