Tell me some nice things, it's the shortest day tomorrow (Thursday) and everyone is sad.

It's the shortest day tomorrow and I'm really hoping that everyone will cheer the fuck up soon.

It's too dark and grey, and the day is far too short, the youth group that I am involved is all falling out with each other, Elf didn't record properly and I've come on here for a bit of light relief, and not one happy thread in the first 4 refreshes of the 'trending' box, come on people, someone must have some happy/funny news and views?

Please tell me some nice things.

After tomorrow, the days are getting longer! That means spring soon and then after spring.... summer! :)

But since were still in December I will tell you a silly joke that made my 7yo laugh.

What do you call a rich elf?

Welfy.

EeesandWhizz · 20/12/2023 00:31

Perfect - I need a Welfy in my life - I'm smiling already.

In case you like theatre, you now can see the wondrous Andrew Scott playing all the parts in Uncle Vanya, at the cinema! 22nd Feb. I so wanted to see that but even standing places were £100 so I am pleased. I have booked my ticket!

If that's no use, here's Michelle Obama playing tambourine for Bruce S in Glory Days

My colleague said to the senior partner something about Baileys and (totally out of character) he sent someone out to buy a bottle and we were all on the Baileys by 11am. Happy staff indeed 😊

DowntonCrabby · 20/12/2023 01:03

Another cheesy festive joke to add…

How does Good King Wenceslas like his pizza?

Deep pan, crisp and even.

romany4 · 20/12/2023 01:24

I actually love the Winter and the dark but anyway....

Yesterday my DH who had a stroke before last Christmas got the all clear for two suspected cancers..I'm so relieved.

I have spent the day baking Christmas cookies and watching The Polar Express with my lovely two year old grandson.

My ds got good news about a job he'd applied for and starts in January. New field and fab salary so he's thrilled.

It's been a very good week so far..

MinnieMountain · 20/12/2023 05:57

My colleague is bringing in home made sausage rolls today. She’s an excellent baker.

Thanks for the heads up @EmmaEmerald . I’m a big fan of live screenings.

@romany4 how wonderful for you all - I hope you have a lovely Christmas and celebrate the good news!

Haveyouseenthemuffinman · 20/12/2023 06:25

In a time of year usually heavy with family obligation, I’m making the effort to see friends who live a long way away today. Can’t wait.

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 20/12/2023 06:27

Being born on the shortest day isn’t any fun either OP, I’ve always felt cheated 🙄
Anyway, I’ve bought myself a gorgeous birthday cake, I’m going for tea at a friend’s house tomorrow and I so look forward to spring!
I no longer expect my DH to do anything for me on my birthday hence planning things for myself 😊

Hedgesfullofbirds · 20/12/2023 06:45

There are some early primroses flowering in my garden already, the snowdrops are pushing through and will open in a few weeks time, the winter flowering honeysuckle is filling the air with a heavenly scent and two greater spotted woodpeckers are routinely visiting my bird feeders!

I love the shortest day as it means the light is returning. I find it best to embrace the seasons and differences rather than ignore or rail against them. Ancient civilisations celebrated the winter solstice - have a look at this at Newgrange. They do a live feed of the beam of light coming into the chamber and there are lots of past recordings.

When I doodle, I do a lot of spirals - at Newgrange there are loads of them. It made me feel that we are all connected and the same.

Newgrange Winter Solstice - Sunrise Alignment

At Newgrange on mornings around the winter solstice a beam of light penetrates the roof-box and travels up the 19m (62ft) passage and into the chamber.

When I’m feeling rubbish about the winter (I dislike the dark evenings) I simply say “lighter days will come”

And they will. Hang on in there.

Hopingforno2in2024 · 20/12/2023 07:01

Tomorrow is my 10th wedding anniversary :)

Soon the snowdrops will appear and then the daffodils.

Happy birthday for tomorrow @JenniferJupiterVenusandMars

TiredandLate · 20/12/2023 07:03

I highly recommend a sunlight alarm clock, fellow SAD people. I got a cheapish one off amazon for under £30 and it's massively improved my morning mood.

Also booked a week in the sun, flying boxing day, I can't wait!

😂😂 Love that!
Can you ask your 7 year old if the have any more like that; those sort of jokes really make me laugh.

Desecratedcoconut · 20/12/2023 07:40

I have a joke, courtesy of my 10yo.

If you are American when you go into the toilets and American when you come out of the toilets, what are you while you are in the toilets? European!

LaChienneDesFromages · 20/12/2023 07:45

Ah, I’m sorry you feel sad. The Christmas lights cheer me up at the moments but come January…ugh!

The bulbs are shooting through, so there’s life under the earth. There are birds and other creatures all around, and they’d appreciate a meal.

There are lots of celebrations at this time of year. And fingers crossed for a fresh, sunny day or two. I like to keep going well after Christmas with Epiphany, Candlemas, St Valentine’s Day and Shrove Tuesday.

Tomorrow we will decorate a Yule log, light a fire pit and throw into the fire sticks representing the things we want to leave behind this year. Then we will cook sausages and ‘s’mores which are definitely happy foods.

Skimm · 20/12/2023 07:48

Gosh the shortest day and the kids have half day, so it really is the shortest day.

Soon there will be no school run, mo uniform to get ready. A nice 2 weeks chill.

aswarmofmidges · 20/12/2023 07:50

I am happy for the purely selfish reason that due to my cock up on how much leave I get ... I can have 2 weeks off over Christmas not one....Roll on Friday

We walked out to see the local lights yesterday evening - they were really rather good / completely OTT but good and totally free. Will walk in a different direction tonight

Comedycook · 20/12/2023 07:52

Hate the short days and long dark evenings....I'm always relieved once we've had the shortest day...I start to feel hopeful

Candycurrantbun · 20/12/2023 07:54

I hate the dark days of winter, but I like the shortest day because it means the light is coming back.

Undineimmor · 20/12/2023 07:54

Cinnamon and apple scent is in my burner. I've put some red adhesive film on my wall and decorated with snowflake pen lots of pictures of candy cane, snowmen etc and there might be lots of multifaceted self adhesive jewels on there too. Cinnamon chai latte is waiting for me and I'm seeing some very dear friends later and going to a couple if events. Little family member is so happy and excited.
My town is so pretty and beautiful right now.

sashh · 20/12/2023 08:11

I've just had a delivery of yummy food to celebrate winter solstice. I shall light candles, eat food and drink wine.
