Weird thing just happened as I stood up

I was sitting down watching a funny video on my phone with DH. Got up, went upstairs and laid down on the bed and all of a sudden my nose started running. One nostril and it was literally like water - never had anything like it.

I don’t have a cold (had one a few weeks ago and now been without symptoms for days).

It stopped after about 5-10 seconds but it was the weirdest sensation of literally water coming from one side of my nose. I have googled it and google is saying to seek medical attention as this can be what cerebral fluid leakage can feel like!

What would you do?

Do you get acid reflux?

IncompleteSenten · 19/12/2023 21:19

I would mention it to my GP and see what they say.

My sister has what she calls her "brain leaks". She's had scans and all sorts and nobody seems to be treating it like an emergency at all. She's been having it on and off for several years.

Do you get acid reflux?

Not often, a few times a year maybe

I'd seek medical assistance. Ring 111.

Whattheheckcarer · 19/12/2023 21:20

Not something I'd take a chance on.

mynameiscalypso · 19/12/2023 21:21

How are your eyes? I get this quite often when my eyes water (whether due to weather, smoke or illness). Only ever one side though.

kimchio · 19/12/2023 21:21

5-10 seconds is quite a long time. I'd phone 111

They’re fine.

I have sneezed a few times today and had a bit of an itchy nose but whenever I have allergies if my nose were to run it would be both nostrils. The one sided bit has freaked me out, and the fact it was literally water and not stretchy like snot! Sorry for tmi!

No harm in phoning 111 to be on the safe aide

Cakeorchocolate · 19/12/2023 21:23

Has it stopped?

Does it stop / start again if you change positions i.e between standing or sitting and lying?

Have you got a headache?

Anything else you think is relevant?

kimchio · 19/12/2023 21:24

Eaten anything that is a common allergen? Blue cheese? Red wine?

Thinkero · 19/12/2023 21:25

It’s fully stopped and hasn’t started again. No headache and no other symptoms of anything being amiss at all.

I had this ever time I bent over for about three months. It was rhinitis and the GP gave me a steroid nose spray and it went away . Good job too as it was really embarrassing in public!

I had similar years ago except the fluid that started pouring was bright yellow like the colour of a highlighter pen and it ran all over my top uncontrollably! I was on holiday and completely freaked out, like you I googled and thought it was a brain leak. I phoned 111 and they couldn't have cared less! Never happened since and it was about 10 years ago. I was also just over a cold.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 19/12/2023 21:35

Happened to me once and I was as disconcerted as you, but I think it was just a sinus discharging. Never happened since and I was completely fine.

MummySS22 · 19/12/2023 21:48

I bet his all the time especially when I bend over. Or sit hunched with my head down looking at my phone. I have health anxiety really bad too and had a meltdown when I googled it and saw it could b brain fluid lol I went straight to my anxiety support groups and they basically all laughed me out of there. I actually forgot all about it until I saw your post. Someone did tell me though cerebral fluid leakage it's really only common with severe trauma like a blunt force.

TheShoulder · 19/12/2023 21:58

If you are concerned, it's always best to seek advice from 111.

However, I have just had a weird cold that started with a few sneezes and my nose running like that (really watery, like tears) and continued to run the same way intermittently despite also been bunged up with thick mucus after the first day. I saw a thread with posters saying they had the same odd symptom.

Nonimai · 19/12/2023 22:11

I had this a lot in my 30s. Sudden gush from one nostril. Enough to wet the front of my top. It was very embarrassing if it happened in public. Also accompanied by a feeling of relief and clear headedness. Dr said it was a sinus clearing itself. I now wonder that it may have happened after swimming. Anyway it never came to anything.

gegs73 · 19/12/2023 22:14

I get this sometimes, sounds like sinuses.

Thinkero · 19/12/2023 22:15

Thanks so much everyone xx
