It is different than the US though because public transport is widely used by everyone whereas in the US I think its used (excluding the subway) mainly by the poor?

Also many people drive manual cars rather than automatic and kids in the US are taught driving education in school? That doesn't happen here yet (AFAIK) and I think the driving test is more difficult here? I may be wrong as I've gathered that assumption by the US driving licence holders have to pass the test here before they can drive anything other than a short term hire car (which makes no sense whatsoever!) while our licences are acceptable in the US?

Edited

I'm not from the US but am from a large country with car-dependency baked into urban planning just like the US

After so many years of being an immigrant to a more accessible country (where cycling, pedestrians, and public transport are prioritised over cars) I'm now shocked at anyone who thinks that not driving is a character flaw... Car dependency is a sign of a broken country.

(Edit for grammar and clarity)

@HarryOHayandBettyOBarley I’m so white I’m virtually pale blue and I moisturise all over daily!! I didn’t think that was unusual at all.

It is unusual for white skin. There was a thread recently about it. Eye opening. It will come up if you search for it.

@cubeMorphine's story about her poorly daughter.

I haven't read the thread you mentioned but I do remember a good friend who is Kenyan with very dark skin casually mentioning that her moisturiser costs are about to go through the roof because it's "Ashy season."

To me that means the cane fields are about to be burned off and it took us a while to understand eachother 😆

HarryOHayandBettyOBarley · 20/12/2023 18:25

Ashy season - is that Wintertime I wonder? Or summertime?

orangetriangle · 20/12/2023 18:25

The couple whose adult son was neurodiverse and were frightened of him and basically cowering in the corner in their own house. People offered help and suggestions only to be told they were picking in their son and to mind their own business!!!

Good question! I can"t remember what time of year it was, I'll have to ask. Would assume winter though, she's diligent with sunscreen through summer

Shakeylegs · 20/12/2023 18:28

I think I read on here once that a child wasn’t neurodiverse and didn’t have ASD/ADHD.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 19/12/2023 00:35

The woman who let her small child walk back from school on their own after dark in winter. The police had spoken to her about this as her child had already been approached by a stranger with a car. She carried on letting him walk home alone as she wanted him to learn independence. Poor child must have been so frightened.

That is truly horrific.

The man might be doing it because the woman finds it pleasant and asked him?

Of course clear boundaries need to be set at the outset.

(Not my thing, I'll hasten to add).

@FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper Thank you for finding that! Will enjoy reading it again.

@Vetoncall yes he was definitely male. I felt/feel the same way as you. It was so unutterably sad. He talked about it as if he equated it to glueing down her bin lid or something. Just a practical joke. I remember being truly shocked.

Re: man stealing neighbour’s dog and dumping it - I’m assuming that many people responded by telling him what an awful thing he’d done. How did he respond to that?

I'm in the US. What amazes me is the number of UK posters who state they do not drive. These are fully grown adults who do not have the capacity to take themselves from one place to another in an automobile.

I might be wrong but aren't driving lessons given to American school kids for free or a cheap price? In the UK you pay for that yourself and it's hell expensive.
Also ignoring that the UK has higher population density and more buses/trains so there's less need to drive

IncompleteSenten · 20/12/2023 18:39

I seem to recall he doubled down. He thought it was funny.

Most adults in the UK drive. It tends to be people in London who don’t. It’s a very busy city, with an excellent public transport system and often gridlocked traffic, so some people reasonably see no point in learning to drive. Other than that, it’s unusual for a Brit to not be able to drive.

When someone felt the need to pretend to not understand someone saying brought instead of bought on a thread by a woman who had recently put all her money into a new house with her partner and he’d just punched her in the face during an argument.

Actually said “I’m confused, where have you brought your house??” on a thread about DV

Jesus Christ, I hate posters like this. Don’t they realise how stupid they make themselves look?

Assisted suicide and euthanasia are clearly abused by some ethicists and medical practitioners in Canada. Hearing loss, other disability, living below the poverty line and poor mental health have all been cited as grounds for letting people die. People who hadn’t considered it are, in some cases, having it suggested to them in medical settings where they are looking for help.

Canada is now looking at extending the “option” to under 18s. WTAF?!

I don't think you'll get jumped on like some of us did as mumsnet has asked us not to derail (sorry mumsnet but just explaining) - apparently some women can't possibly enjoy xyz in the bedroom and must only like it because of the lies we've been told and/or the patriarchy and/or today's porn driven society. How they've managed to get into my bedroom to see that I'm clearly not enjoying what I say I enjoy is a mystery beyond me!
