Vinted Scam- any advice?

Walker111 · 18/12/2023 23:02

Sold a mulberry purse, brilliant condition and I came down £50 because I need the money for Christmas.
It had been kept in its box, covers, tags everything but I packaged it so carefully inside another box and then inside a shipping bag so that even the mulberry box would be in good condition for them.
He’s received the package and now asked Vinted for his money back- claiming that I sent some cheap sandals instead. For those who don’t know, Vinted keep the money until the buyer says they have received goods. So he’s probably going to get his money back and I know he also has the purse.
the image below shows the shipping bag I sent the purse in, so I know he got the purse. I’ve never seen the sandals in my life and I know 100% that I sent the purse.
vinted have asked for proof that I sent the correct item- photos of it in its packaging etc
But I never took any, it never crossed my mind 😞
Im so angry, about the money (which is needed) but also that someone has tricked me so easily and it looks like they will get away with it as they have pictures and I don’t.

Anyone had this happen and had a successful outcome? Just wanted a bit of advice before I message Vinted with my defence

Vinted Scam- any advice?

That’s terrible. I’m so sorry. That message from him is irritatingly fake too - like he’s trying to ingratiate himself with Vinted by calling it a ‘trusted site’. Either he’s lying or someone has tampered with the post - the former seems more likely.

Hold firm and explain what happened in lots of detail (including about boxing the box), postage details and a screenshot of your receipt and insurance will hopefully kick in. Hopefully someone else will chime in from experience with more specific advice. Good luck.

Walker111 · 18/12/2023 23:22

It’s the moral high ground message, from a scammer, that made me 🤬

Are they still on Vinted? I couldn't see their name when I searched. What's their reviews like vs yours?

im assuming a purse was in a small shipping bag? Do you have any more to hand? What are the dimensions, I'd assume smaller than one that would hold sandals which is why he's only shown half a pic. Can you ask for the full picture of the sandals next to the bag etc?

it's a nightmare as they do normally find with the buyer, which when they're scammers is galling. :(

Which company did you use to send it?

Vinted are known to have problems with InPost lockers - as they go in label-less the couriers out the wrong address label on the wrong parcel

Floopyfloop · 18/12/2023 23:28

Do you know how much it weighed?

emptyframes · 18/12/2023 23:30

So sorry to hear this OP. I hope you get your money. I would see if there's a way to track whether your parcel was weighed during the shipping process that would have proved it was the same weight as the bag and box you shipped and not the same as those ugly sandals!

This is why I film the entire process of myself packaging up any item I sell over £50 and also taking photos of the final package. For added security I film myself taping the shipping label or something over the seal of the package and also take close up photos that prove the final way I've packaged it. And then I video myself posting the package as well showing that my 'safety seal' hasn't been tampered with before I posted it. I've written words or done something else as well over where I've sealed the package if the label wasn't printed and applied at home or there were multiple places I sealed the package up.

Walker111 · 18/12/2023 23:35

The user still shows in my messages, but not when I do a search either.
yes I have more of the postage bags, but they would probably fit some sandals in. I packaged the purse in a smaller box (inside the postage bag) which definitely wouldn’t fit sandals in- but he hasn’t shown that in the pic.

OP posts:
Walker111 · 18/12/2023 23:37

It was Inpost, but I printed the label myself- which I can see on one of the pics, so I know he got my package.
and it’s the only thing I’ve sold for a while so I know there was no parcel mix up

Mellowautumnmists · 18/12/2023 23:39

Have you asked on Vinted's forum for advice?

Walker111 · 18/12/2023 23:39

Don’t know how much it weighed. The buyer bought the label when they bought the purse, I printed it out and put it in an inpost locker
Thats an idea though- if there’s any record of a courier weighing it- it’ll definitely have been more than some sandals

Oh! That's terrible. Sorry that happened! Can't believe people scam this way too. Do you have original proof of purchase of the bag? May be share that and pictures of the bag and as much detail as possible of the packaging to Vinted.
Can you click on the profile of the buyer from your messages? Is the profile still genre? Do they have reviews? How about you? Do you have good reviews from other buyers in the past ? If you have and If it’s a new buyer with no reviews, you can use that as a proof as well to Vinted. Don’t give up, stand your ground.

MadMadamMimz · 18/12/2023 23:47

The buyer may try and resell it on Vinted so might be worth keeping an eye out to see if it comes up. If they had half a brain cell they would use a different username but Vinted might know the IP address and home address they are using which could match your buyer.

Try and see if you can get any info regarding weight from delivery or whether a photo was taken by the courier before it was given to the buyer.

WhichOneGoes · 18/12/2023 23:52

That's awful. How frustrating. It's theft but I don't suppose there is much point calling them?

Bogeyes · 18/12/2023 23:58

I don't send anything valuable now. I have been conned too. They always take the buyers side!

jadey1991 · 19/12/2023 00:00

Hi op, this has happened to me, although I was the buyer. I ordered a brand new pair of boots on vinted hut come collection time I received jogging bottoms. Apparently its the courier that mis places the items and places them wherever...

Have you got the tracking number?
Ask the seller to send you the picture of the package and labels printed on them.. u will be able to tell if its ur tracking number..

Contact vinted yourself and explain what has happened and send all proof that you have along with the buyers pictures..

From there you should both receive a refund if everything is different on the package that the buyer has and the tracking number you have... if younhave any more questions please feel free to ask me

In Post has CCTV!!!

I would call their customer service and tell them when you posted it and see if there's some footage they can provide you showing you approaching the locker and putting the box in.

If that fails call again and see if there's a video of your parcel being deposited into the delivery locker by the In Post handler.

I've had to call them up before when my I accidentally put a parcel into the wrong locker when two had opened. They could see me live on their CCTV screen

ReindeerHoptimist · 19/12/2023 00:02

I bought a large vase and got a small skirt- inputs mixed labels
I got a refund- seller got the payment
Vinted customer service is actually quite good- much bette than eBay

Avacardo2023 · 19/12/2023 00:02

Play them at their own game. Tell them that as it was a high value item you placed a tiny tracker in the package which shows it was delivered to their address so you will be contacting the police in the morning and they should expect police contact shortly.

blackfluffycat · 19/12/2023 00:04

This is awful. I sell things on eBay purely because I need the money. It's not really worth it and even with proof of postage they can scam you.

Even if you videoed yourself packing the item there is no proof it was sent. Not you just in general.

Why isn't the photo further away showing the bag and label and both shoes?

I hope it's sorted for you.

blackfluffycat · 19/12/2023 00:08

Just read the thread and noticed someone mentioned filming. That was a coincidence.

bathmatshowermat · 19/12/2023 00:36

Oh my gosh. I think the same is about to happen to me. I sold something pricy, sent it, and the person has no reviews. I'm so stupid. Normally I'm much more observant but had been so busy, I didn't check.

Has anyone got any good news stories of Vinted siding with the seller?

Walker111 · 19/12/2023 07:55

I know there was no package mix up as they’ve sent a few pictures of my packaging and label. They’ve opened my package, taken the purse out and pretended I sent some worthless sandals. So Inpost cctv etc probably won’t be a help as they are not disputing receiving the package.

Vinted has given me two options- give the seller a refund or ask the seller to return the item and get a refund- in which case they will get their money back, get to keep the purse and I’ll get someone’s dirty old sandals in the post.

I’ll contact Inpost today to see if there are any pics of package being delivered, which might show the shape of the box inside. And I’ll ask if it was weighed as the package I sent will have weighed more than sandals.

I think I’ve got to accept though that I’ve probably just been scammed 🙁

thank for all of the help though everyone

The buyer is still on Vinted and has given some interesting feedback to another seller previously. You have to search for members not items.

User000001234 · 19/12/2023 08:27

I've just seen the buyer is also showing up when you search members.

There's a profile pic of him too (if that's really him) maybe try and do a reverse Google image search to see if anything suspect turns up from his picture? Clutching at straws I know.

I'm so sorry this happened, I really hope you get your purse back :(

To be fair this is difficult to avoid as the buyer, legit or not just has to Buy and you can't veto at all Sad
