Porridge for dinner, weird?

Splendidsunbird · 18/12/2023 16:58

That's what I'm having for dinner. Just me to feed tonight and I have cream and blueberries so I am going to make a bowl of extremely luxurious porridge and enjoy snuggled on the sofa with Netflix on.
DP thinks that's weird, I can't wait.

I love hot porridge with a big dollop of vanilla ice-cream. Haven't done it for ages but you just reminded me. Yum.

whatausername · 18/12/2023 19:15

A little but what's wrong with weird?

Splendidsunbird · 18/12/2023 21:36

Dinner porridge....porridge with ice cream...rum soaked raisins...I like your thinking, people

I’m dieting but, when I’m not, my favourite porridge is made with milk and then topped with a small glug of Irish whiskey, brown sugar, and some whipped cream.

Precipice · 18/12/2023 21:44

It's fine to eat, but I wouldn't call it dinner. I'd say you weren't having dinner.

Sealover123 · 18/12/2023 21:45

I have oatmeal for dinner a few times a month. Canadian here so it's got to have lots of fresh blueberries, warm milk and a big drizzle of real maple syrup 🍁

mondaytosunday · 18/12/2023 21:54

Not weird. The joy of eating alone is eating exactly what you want.

ellecf21 · 18/12/2023 21:55

Delish, thinking I could have had that. I was on my own tonight and just cooked 2 chicken breasts to eat. Dull.

persisted · 18/12/2023 22:03

DH bought home some stollen flavoured rum a few weeks ago from m & s. It's delicious. Hadn't occurred to me to soak raisins for the porridge...definitely need to sort this out for the morning.

My top tip - stir in cocoa and instant coffee before cooking. Mocha porridge is a winner.

Torganer · 18/12/2023 22:04

Sounds horrible to me, porridge should only be made with water and salt!

eveoha · 18/12/2023 22:04

Cranachan is a delightful oat desert 👍☘️

Splendidsunbird · 18/12/2023 22:05

Whisky on porridge! Wow, I'm going to have to try that

Just don't, whatever you do, try savoury cheese porridge. I made it once as an experiment, thinking risotto = nice, therefore cheese porridge = probably nice.
It wasn't nice, it was all kinds of wrong. It was cognitive dissonance in a bowl.

Having breakfast stuff for dinner wouldn't be unusual here. I'm the type who thinks you can eat whatever you want when you want. Although I wouldn't call porridge luxurious 😂

It is when you add the price of blueberries!

Bonjovispjs · 18/12/2023 22:15

It's fine, have whatever you fancy. I had Shepherd's pie for breakfast once, just because I fancied it 😋

kalokagathos · 18/12/2023 22:20

Perfect- nutritious!

christmaspaws · 18/12/2023 22:21

It's what I eat when I CBA cooking! Usually with banana and peanut butter

RhinestoneCowgirl · 18/12/2023 22:23

Enjoy your porridge! I had muesli with yogurt and fruit for my tea last night. It was just what I fancied and was delicious.

AllTheAll · 18/12/2023 22:27

All of these combinations sound lovely and cream on porridge is always to look forward to.

@Splendidsunbird , keep going with the cheese idea. I would love a savory porridge option. Maybe needs a brown sauce of some sort too.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/12/2023 22:28

I often have porridge or granola for dinner
Cheap, easy and filling

kitsuneghost · 18/12/2023 22:32

Levi roots does an amazing porridge with condensed milk and rosewater involved.

I agree up to a point- porridge should definitely only be made with water and salt- but once it’s in the bowl it’s time for the double cream/strawberries/brown sugar/stewed prunes…
I’m now feeling very hungry and really want porridge for a bedtime snack!

RollMeAway · 18/12/2023 22:33

Not weird, I also had porridge tonight topped with nuts i caramelised in maple syrup and some sea salt.... I often love a bowl of comforting porridge for dinner 😂

Water porridge and cream porridge aren't really the same dish though.
It's the same as rice you have with your curry v rice pudding.

verrymerryberry · 18/12/2023 22:44

Not weird

Sometimes I long for my single days where tea consists of half a pack of chocolate raisins and a fridge of cheese and salami

Today I had to slog over a left over roast.

We have a "cooked dinner" every night pre planned. Sometimes I'd just want a pot noodle, or a slice of toast
