Porridge for dinner, weird?

Splendidsunbird · 18/12/2023 16:58

That's what I'm having for dinner. Just me to feed tonight and I have cream and blueberries so I am going to make a bowl of extremely luxurious porridge and enjoy snuggled on the sofa with Netflix on.
DP thinks that's weird, I can't wait.

I love porridge.

I have it fancy pants ways with fruit and such sometimes, but other times I make my own Down and Quick Instant Porridge for lunch.

I could eat it everyday, and sometimes I do.. 😁

@kitsuneghost
i use different rice for paella, risotto, biryani, etc. I have never made rice pudding as I think it’s disgusting. I only use oats for savoury foods, so the thought of a sweet porridge sounds horrible to me - but each to their own!!

LyingLikeACheapCarpet · 18/12/2023 23:05

What is porridge with water and salt? Gruel?

Cheeseplantalltheway · 18/12/2023 23:09

Not weird. I like a savoury porridge with sage, butternut squash and mixed seeds.

And yes a wee dram of whisky goes very well!

Not sure what gruel is, we just call it porridge.

Gruel - imagine porridge... But made with half water, half milk and boiled for hours and hours and hours.. maybe woth some acorns, actual acorns, thrown in.. and maybe some hemp.. or other odds and sods and rubbish.

Yuck

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 18/12/2023 23:15

Not weird. Sounds delicious, OP.

CurlewKate · 18/12/2023 23:16

I didn't want any dinner earlier and I have just had two crumpets with honey and I am contemplating a third.

I'm not meaning to be obtuse, for me Porridge is creamy, I can't imagine water and salt is very nice, but I shall try it tomorrow.

Mother87 · 18/12/2023 23:21

If my DS25 comes in late from work, he often asks for a huuge bowl of porridge @ 10pm ish

bakedpotatoforlunch · 18/12/2023 23:32

Not weird at all. Porridge is great in every way at any time. I have it every other day for breakfast (usually with chopped banana or blueberries and a dollop of honey) rotating it with poached eggs on toast just to ring the changes a bit.

Sometimes I have it as a pre-bedtime snack or at least cold milk poured straight onto the oats with a sprinkling of demerara sugar - yum!

Have it and enjoy it when you like!

It will go creamy if you cook it slowly and stir almost constantly to release the starch- like a risotto.

I think those that are calling porridge delicious should look at widening their taste bud portfolio 😂

ItsAStupidQuestion · 18/12/2023 23:55

I used to love a massive bowl of porridge with raisins and a boatload of golden syrup on the top - I'd eat it sometimes in the evening with a cuppa 👍

shallihaveago · 19/12/2023 07:34

Ooo no thanks. Can't stand the stuff. Nothing wrong with you doing exactly what you want though!

savemytimezone · 19/12/2023 07:36

I often eat oats for dinner, in the form of muesli with nuts and fruit. It's quick and filling. Also, it really helps calm my stomach down if my reflux is playing up. I always sleep better on my oat nights!

bellac11 · 19/12/2023 08:10

I think its weird to consider some foods as breakfast or lunch or dinner foods

Im having chickpea curry for breakfast as its what I have in

0hNoNotAgain · 19/12/2023 08:13

I have blueberries and protein powder in my porridge - it's a good meal any time of day !!

Moredarkchocolateplease · 19/12/2023 08:47

I often have porridge for tea when DH isn't in. He always wants meat or fish and carbs.

I can't be bothered with dinner as a rule.

Splendidsunbird · 19/12/2023 14:41

I'm really intrigued about the deleted post on here, an innocuous thread about porridge, what could have prompted the poster to break talk guidelines 😂

X rated porridge posts!

Lol the mind boggles!

It sounds good to me. I don't think there should be any rules about what one eats when. I'm not a porridge person, but I occasionally have bacon and mushrooms at lunchtime. I certainly wouldn't think porridge or muesli (my alternative) at all exceptional for an evening meal.

newnamethanks · 14/04/2024 21:28

Porridge for dinner? Definitely. And for breakfast.
