Zara is facing a massive boycott after their latest ad campaign which featured corpses in shrouds...I wonder what the creative team behind it were thinking??

Except it was shot a while ago and it's wrapped shop dummies. It's something that has been done many times before in fashion shoots. More of a 'behind the scenes' thing.

Cheeesus · 17/12/2023 08:44

I don’t know about the rest of the campaign, but that photo is clearly a mannequin in an artist’s studio.

justalittlesnoel · 17/12/2023 08:45

It was shot yonks ago apparently! It's meant to be like the model is working behind the scenes and setting things up, not like they're carrying someone in a body bag. It's a type of photo I've seen before! People just like to link everything random they can for a reason to cause trouble / boycott.

Hotcuppatea · 17/12/2023 08:48

I think people need to get a grip. I'm sick of screeching mobs.

PackageCount167 · 17/12/2023 09:18

Even if it was shot ages ago, surely they can assess the current climate...it doesnt bode well for the company at all. And its always about profit and brand image.

Its clear its a shop dummy, not a person, she is holding it over the shoulder with one hand and its stiff? If it resembled a dead person than yes, but its does not.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2023 09:32

Who has made the connection with Palestine and why?
When you say they are facing a ‘massive’ boycott do you have any evidence of this? After all that would be a lot of people just following like sheep and not looking into how plausible this actually is. Is this something you are hoping to bring about by posting it on here?

LaChienneDesFromages · 17/12/2023 09:33

I really am struggling to make the link between that photo and the Israel/Palestine situation. I suppose it’s possible if one spent one’s time stalking the internet looking for things to get offended about. But there really are better things to focus attention on.

Same!

localnotail · 17/12/2023 09:36

I also think this supposed "connection" if very offensive to Palestinians, too - and possibly a trolling: I have seen posts online where people were saying that dead Palestinians wrapped in white shrouds are not real people but dummies. So maybe this is what the poster is getting at?

Peablockfeathers · 17/12/2023 09:40

I usually agree that things like this are often a reach, but all of the campaign and not just this photo is questionable. Even if was shot in the summer you'd think someone would have some foresight to recognise how it might be perceived, but at least some of their high ups have quite extreme views on the situation so I suspect they knew what they were doing. I think people should be free to make their own minds up and boycott brands they want to rather than being pressured into though.

ADpackage · 17/12/2023 09:43

Except that Vanessa Perilman, the head designer came under fire 2 years ago for making anti Palestinian comments. She was never removed. Coincidence?

Even if the campaign was created months ago, the similarities are too stark and it should never have been publicised in the current climate. Not sure why people shouldn’t speak out against this, at the very least it’s bad taste when thousands of children are being wrapped in shrouds like this and being buried alive in rubble.

Increasinglyfrazzledteacher · 17/12/2023 09:45

The image has nothing to do with Gaza, and you’d have to be a paranoid idiot to think otherwise.

localnotail · 17/12/2023 09:46

I agree - pure conspiracy theory bollocks. Sorry to be blunt.

I looked at these again - this just confirms my earlier post. Conspiracy theory. If the makers of the advert wanted to be offensive they would not have been so subtle.

naughtynine · 17/12/2023 09:49

Judging by the fact the model is holding it on one shoulder & said model isn’t in a strongest women in the world comp it’s clearly not a corpse.
Not sure what it has to do with Gaza?

Bobsyouraunty · 17/12/2023 09:54

people are angry about it on sm. But these are the same people who are probably chronically online and need to go outside and touch grass.

these things are shot and created months In advance???

also I don’t think Zara would be callous to flick through images of Gaza and get inspo from that.

Its a shame Zara apologised but they probably did so for lip service and to protect sales because I dont think they’re in the wrong.

The more people tell me to boycott the more I want to shop in these places.

bellac11 · 17/12/2023 09:57

Whats this got to do with Palestine?

They're shop dummies wrapped up for dressing?

And if they were corpses in shrouds (so dramatic), you know there are other wars and other atrocities going on around the world dont you? You dont actually do you?

ADpackage · 17/12/2023 09:58

Some posters being a bit obtuse here, it’s not about whether it was deliberate or not, these images should never have been publicised. If you’ve been seeing these kind of images from Gaza yourself for the last few months as I have the similarities are clear.

It’s insensitive and given the history and sympathies of the head designer Zara should have known better. I think people are right to speak out about it.

ElevenSeven · 17/12/2023 09:59

There’s people dying all over the world, there’s no reason to make this about Palestine.

People boycotting companies pushes me the other way, tbh. Protesting outside shops and terrifying minimum wage shop workers, as if it’s going to have ANY effect on what happens in the Middle East.

naughtynine · 17/12/2023 10:00

But why link it to Gaza & not Ukraine? Myanmar etc?

bellac11 · 17/12/2023 10:01

Its made me wonder if they have some nice party tops in actually.
