Zara is facing a massive boycott after their latest ad campaign which featured corpses in shrouds...I wonder what the creative team behind it were thinking??

Posting this was always going to be polarising on musmsnet. Why would anyone connect it to Ukraine they don't bury their dead in white shrouds? People can buy clothes from wherever they like, I find Zara sizing shit and the quality no better than other similarly priced stores.

@Southpoint she was out and out racist to him. The only reason she apologised was due to backlash. He had every right to post her comments publicly.

What do you mean the Ukrainians don't bury their dead in shrouds?

Not even those that are Muslim? Wow

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2023 10:56

Wow.

Three people were arrested yesterday. If you Google it you will see the news reports on it. Customers and staff should not have to feel afraid going to work/shopping.

Southpoint · 17/12/2023 11:22

If anyone should be accountable is the people making this shit up. As for potentially triggering the nuts out there to attack innocent people.

backtowinter · 17/12/2023 10:35

@mindthespace Ever heard of the Crimean Tatars?

I'm making a point of visiting Zara next time I'm in town. The muppets attacking the Glasgow store sums up the mentality of sheep like behaviour

Less than 5% of Ukraine is Muslim. At a time when many social posts are covered with bodies in white shrouds then perhaps the brand could have been more sensitive.

If you feel that strongly about shopping in Zara then you should. Hope you find something you like.

Personally I'll spend my money on shops I feel strongly about and Zara isn't one of them.

LlynTegid · 17/12/2023 11:38

Regardless of how many people in Ukraine are of a particular faith, a campaign referencing death or likely to be seen as such is in very bad taste.

The Zara store in Glasgow City Centre has had to close its doors twice this week due to protesters outside.

They’re as bad as the stop oil twats. Looking for a bandwagon to jump on.

Peablockfeathers · 17/12/2023 11:58

I think it's deplorable to target stores and cause trouble at them, but I'm not sure why some get so upset by others choosing where to spend their money. I suspect the pressure to boycott isn't that widespread if people are finding out on this thread and then acting outraged.

Most of them probably don't know what they're protesting for, just heard about it and thought they'd join. Anything for trouble. I honestly don't know why they feel that targeting the store is beneficial. All it's doing is preventing people from shopping and working whilst causing those trying to get around them anxiety and fear. At this time of year luke many other cities the city centre is busy with families and youngsters who really shouldn't have to be witness to their appalling behaviour.
Zara have removed the ad and apologised yet still these people feel it's not enough. Anything for trouble and a possible 5mins of fame on local news.

Re Vanessa Perilman, not sure how these comments aren't explicitly racist:

“Maybe if your people were educated then they wouldn’t blow up the hospitals and schools that Israel helped to pay for in Gaza,” a screenshot of Perilman’s message to Harhash reads. “Israelis don’t teach children to hate nor throw stones at soldiers as your people do.”

Given this history, Zara should apologise and I'm glad they did. The adverts offended a great many people and they should acknowledge that.

If you are not offended by the campaign, great. If you can't see any parallels between the images and those coming out of Gaza, fine. But many people do and as such Zara should apologise and be accountable for the images they produce and publicise.

Sounds like she's talking about political ideology to me

People are allowed to have views.

PackageCount167 · 17/12/2023 13:22

@bleughgreen did I say I find it offensive?
I said bizarre.

I think people need to get a grip. I'm sick of screeching mobs.

Agree

@ElevenSeven @bellac11 @ChardonnaysBeastlyCat I dont care where you shop...you've missed my point entirely. Im not calling for a boycott.

It's a dummy.

But less if one than the people trying to make something of this that's not there.

Some people can be offended by needing to open their front door before they walk through it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2023 10:31

The model in the Zara ad isn’t even dressed in any way which suggests she is meant to be a Palestinian Muslim.

Oh my ...

You need to sit down.
Who said she is supposed to look Muslim...?!

NewbieTwentyFour · 17/12/2023 13:43

It’s not just the imagery here though, is it? You’re not sharing the full story. The boycott is a result of an ongoing theme with Zara that dates back to the Vanessa Perilman incident in 2021.

She posted "Maybe if your people were educated, then they wouldn't blow up hospitals and schools that Israel helped to pay for in Gaza," to a Palestinian model whilst head designer for Zara, which created the narrative that Zara was anti-Palestinian.

In 2022, Zara hosted Itamar Ben Gvir at a campaign event, head of Otzma Yehudit nationalist party who has over 50 indictments and 8 convictions for crimes relating to racial violence and terrorism.

The timing of this photo shoot, whether intentional or not, doesn’t exactly help the matter. People are right to call them out on how inappropriate it is.

Well, if you are not calling for a boycott then I suppose you should be happy you be happy you got them some business.

PackageCount167 · 17/12/2023 13:47

Oh yes! Im thrilled.
