Zara is facing a massive boycott after their latest ad campaign which featured corpses in shrouds...I wonder what the creative team behind it were thinking??

Its made me wonder if they have some nice party tops in actually.

Same, off to presume their website now

Even if it was shot ages ago, surely they can assess the current climate...it doesnt bode well for the company at all. And its always about profit and brand image.

All companies are about profit and brand image.

But why is this specifically about Palestine? There’s still a war in Ukraine where presumably people are dying. There are natural disasters everywhere, the drug lords in South America. The fentanyl epidemic. I can’t see anything which specifically points to Palestine?

naughtynine · 17/12/2023 10:04

What about production in China & the forced labour camps?

Some posters being a bit obtuse here, it’s not about whether it was deliberate or not, these images should never have been publicised. If you’ve been seeing these kind of images from Gaza yourself for the last few months as I have the similarities are clear.

It’s insensitive and given the history and sympathies of the head designer Zara should have known better. I think people are right to speak out about it.

With all due respect, I think you need to try to get out of the conspiracy rabbit hole you have fallen in.

pretzelbreath · 17/12/2023 10:04

Most Zara campaigns are weird and make no sense, weird poses etc. I can sort of see the theme with this on, I don't honk it's deliberately done. I can also see how it can be converted into being something offensive, like the M&S one, and how it should have been re considered. I don't think the the offence was intended but I do think someone could have said maybe we could go with a different look now that all this has kicked off. Maybe they did and still decided they liked this campaign, we'll never know. But to me, it just looks a bit shit anyway.

But why link it to Gaza & not Ukraine? Myanmar etc?

Because people from Ukraine aren't buried in shrouds. Muslims are.

As another person mentioned up thread the head designer has made negative comments before about Palestine.

Personal choice to shop there or not.

localnotail · 17/12/2023 10:06

Who cares about these things anyway? Fashion designers are not the brightest people around, they do not think too deep. Sometimes they do idiotic things but this is not one of them.

Southpoint · 17/12/2023 10:09

This is ridiculous. I would be more concern about people chanting anti- semitic slogans.

I love the outfit in the photo. Off to see if it is still available.

No, it seems that is the wrong thing to be offended about, that’s absolutely fine..

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 17/12/2023 10:13

They have some quite nice velvet dresses.

Thanks for making me look OP.

Southpoint · 17/12/2023 10:13

Did people get the memo that cancel culture is cancelled? It brought down a few of their own so not fair anymore LOL

Maybe you should start a post about that so people can comment without derailing the Op thread?

Significant Muslim population in Ukraine

Lots of other Muslims dying throughout atrocities in the world

Its a ridiculous thread. This is what happens when people are paranoid and buy into conspiracies, they get derailed.

Good heavens, the childish conceit of that post.
Do you think you’re the only person who has been following the news over the last few months?

I think people are right to speak out about what the IDF are doing to children in Gaza. Making out this campaign has anything to do with that is ridiculous as well as a distraction from what really matters.

I also think it’s actively harmful because it will make people feel like they’re doing something to prevent the slaughter by simply boycotting Zara. It’s a pure virtue signal which will have no good effect whatsoever on the people that need help.

Ahhh, disagreeing is now derailing, I get it!

Hive mind only.

sounds like Hamas

CormorantStrikesBack · 17/12/2023 10:17

It’s got bugger all to do with Palestinian 🤷🏻‍♀️. You could as well say it’s glorifying Dexter. Ffs

I think people need to get a grip. I'm sick of screeching mobs.

I agree with this in spades. People have lost the ability to think critically about such matters.

DaftyInTheMiddle · 17/12/2023 10:22

Zara are absolutely scumbags anyway. Vanessa Perilman’s comments to a Palestinian model in 2021 were abhorrent, the sweatshop workers from Bolivia, child sweatshop workers in Argentina, the labels saying “help us, we are prisoners”, the Uyghur forced Labour, and even the low level stuff of stealing designs from small artists.

Absolutely grim company from the foundations up.

Whether this is a deliberate swipe at Palestine or not, it detracts from the absolutely awful practices that company gets away with.

ADpackage · 17/12/2023 10:24

Because Muslim bodies are wrapped in white shrouds. Because whole buildings, hospitals schools and residential buildings are being levelled in Gaza and people are being buried in rubble, and the Zara images show rubble and debris. It’s the similarity to the images coming out of Gaza, unlike other atrocities going on atm, and the fact that the company still went ahead with the campaign.

naughtynine · 17/12/2023 10:26

Because people from Ukraine aren't buried in shrouds. Muslims are.

So no Muslims have died in the Russia/Ukraine conflict? Or in conflicts before the 7/10?

Like I said I get boycotting fast fashion for supply chain human rights issue but an advert?

The Zara image shows peeling paint not rubble and debris.

I haven't seen any images that look like the Zara ads

arewedoneyet · 17/12/2023 10:27

The ad is fine.

However I just don't get why if you don't think it's appropriate you only think of it in relation to Gaza?

What about the amount of bodies from the Hamas attack on Israel?

VolvoFan · 17/12/2023 10:28

Very old photo.

Many clothing brands do these wrapping up shoots after a long month of shooting.

Exactly the same as 'tweet archeology'.

Leave the company alone.

Stop looking for things to take offence from.

I have never shopped at Zara, but am now curious. Thanks for bringing them to my attention 🙂
