What trousers does a 3 yo wear in winter?

My son is 3.5 and complains about being cold when we are on the way to nursery (though he insists on only wearing shorts and t-shirt round the house!). We walk most places as we live in London. He has a warm coat, hat etc. He wears tracksuit trousers everyday as they are easy for him to dress himself and for getting dirty at nursery.

Not sure what else I can do to keep him warm and if other trousers would be better? What trousers does your 3yo wear and are they warm enough?

They are cheap multipack ones from Next but are there better quality warmer brands?

You could get some thermals as well but would it make going to the toilet harder for him?

shellyleppard · 15/12/2023 15:56

How about some heavy jeans or corduroy trousers??? Some have elasticated waist so easy for younger ones x

Backinthedress · 15/12/2023 15:57

H&m used to do lovely Jersey lined trousers.

Could you pop a pair of tights or leggings underneath? An extra layer should help.

We have "brushed-inside joggers" from H&M which are soft and cosy. LO never complains about being cold.

We also have Heatgen™ Thermal Long Johns (2-14 Yrs) from M&S that we put on when it's very very cold or we're out all evening.

Boden used to make lined “baggies”, elasticated waist so easy to pull up and down, but nice and warm. We live in Yorkshire so it’s colder, but my DS used to wear tights under his trousers to keep warm.

TheBirdintheCave · 15/12/2023 16:14

My three year old son wears smart corduroy and chino or tweed style trousers largely from H&M. They were better from the baby section (more choice of colours and styles) but now we have to shop in the older children's section everything is very drab and casual 😑

I do have the same worries about him being cold but he's not mentioned it as yet.

Pipistrellus · 15/12/2023 16:18

Corduroy trousers from vinted.

Girasoli · 15/12/2023 16:45

Mine just wears tracksuit bottoms - they seem to be fleecy inside though. He also has a pair of corduroy trousers which he says are 'so soft'.

Longjohns are a staple in our house plus whatever trousers. You also buy fur lined trousers from trespass just now quite cheaply and they are fab and warm

Sproutier · 15/12/2023 17:06

Just normal trousers. But then my son's friends would competitively wear shorts into November in junior school. The wind can go through joggers a bit. Asda used to do some trousers that look like jeans but feel like joggers inside. These are great and really warm.

Would wellies or weatherproof boots help? You can get waterproof, fleece lined dungaree things to go over trousers for forest school, but that might be OTT for your needs.

Cabeza · 15/12/2023 18:08

Lined jeans with elasticated waist. Or cords same.
Mine also wore a tank top knitted by grandma so no mucky jumper cuffs but warm.

alliscalmish · 15/12/2023 18:13

Fleece lined leggings from Next

Caspianberg · 15/12/2023 18:18

Mine wears warm leggings.

But then I put either fleece lined rain dungeree or snow salopettes on in cold weather. He has to have them on at nursery also to go outside.

NameChange30 · 17/12/2023 17:20

Some joggers are thicker than others, my kids have thick ones from Next (maybe the multipack ones are thinner?). I have some cheaper ones from H&M that are very thin but good for spares as they roll up small in a bag.

Otherwise you can get fleece-lined leggings, they tend to be cosy, and maybe put some waterproof trousers over the top for the walk to/from nursery. You can take them off when he goes inside so he only has one pair of trousers to take off / put on when going to the toilet.

Layers are best I think.

Potter23 · 17/12/2023 17:22

For nursery my son (3.5) wears multipack joggers from Asda or Tesco and is fine.

his coat comes quite long, I bought a new one in 4-5 as his 3-4 years coat was short in sleeves.

but once a week is Forest School day, so he then wears thermal leggings and top under his normal nursery clothes. Thermals were from sports direct.

NameChange30 · 17/12/2023 17:23

You can get decent thermals from Decathlon too.

ckcla1982 · 17/12/2023 17:24

My 3.5 year old son wears a snowsuit to walk to nursery which keeps him lovely and warm. I always buy the next ones as they're great quality. Bought this one for about £10 on vinted. Bought previous ones in the sale and on Facebook marketplace

My DC always wore elasticated waist corduroy trousers

OneMoreMyWay · 17/12/2023 17:51

If it's just on the way to nursery and he's fine in his joggers when he's there, get him some rain trousers or fleece lined rain trousers. It will cut the wind so he won't feel so cold. I don't know if you need fleece lined ones in London. Then you can take them off when he gets to nursery and he doesn't have to cope with tights etc when he goes to the toilet.

Puffinshop · 17/12/2023 18:43

When it's a bit chilly but not cold enough for a snow suit my kids often wear fleece trousers over the top of their normal trousers. Just outside - they take them off inside.

These ones are good but any would be fine. We're in Iceland so I don't know if this would be too hot for London winter, but my kids use them in the spring and autumn.

Tights underneath?

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 17/12/2023 19:15

Look for Boden or Frugi lined jeans or cords on Vinted. Frugi come up quite big.
