What trousers does a 3 yo wear in winter?

santasknackered · 15/12/2023 15:52

My son is 3.5 and complains about being cold when we are on the way to nursery (though he insists on only wearing shorts and t-shirt round the house!). We walk most places as we live in London. He has a warm coat, hat etc. He wears tracksuit trousers everyday as they are easy for him to dress himself and for getting dirty at nursery.

Not sure what else I can do to keep him warm and if other trousers would be better? What trousers does your 3yo wear and are they warm enough?

They are cheap multipack ones from Next but are there better quality warmer brands?

If it’s just for the walk to / from nursery, we bought a snow suit type thing from
regatta that just goes over his normal clothes for the journey, something like this https://www.regatta.com/kids-splosh-iii-waterproof-puddle-suit-oxford-blue/

I use POP merino wool thermals under trousers. If it's just the walk to nursery that's the problem, what about this? Coat on top obviously. Always use them if going out for prolonged periods in the cold. https://www.polarnopyret.co.uk/products/waterproof-baby-kids-shell-dungarees-navy-60501840-483?variant=40460689932427&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA1fqrBhA1EiwAMU5m_zUSP6KlJvNBtoWlWtqsVKQFVS3_uPxSGwsmddfDRRSm0ZPd136zmhoCv_UQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

If he's cold on the way to nursery rather than cold at nursery I'd get some over trousers. Water proof ones. Some are fleece lined as well. It'll keep the wind out

Joggers and then fleece lined waterproof's or salopettes over the top for walking places for playing outside.

itsgettingweird · 18/12/2023 05:05

I'm with all those saying go for a fleece lined overlayer.

Perfect for days it's raining so multi use.

My ds had an all in one until he was 6 as we walked lots of places and it was so easy to take off and be warm and dry underneath.

Rickenbackergoodgrief · 18/12/2023 05:14

Corduroy trousers.
Knee high socks help too.

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/12/2023 05:36

I used to put dd in the waterproof fleece lined Togz puddle suits. Can’t believe they’re discontinued as they were the best on the market. Something like that op.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 18/12/2023 08:35

If it’s just for the walk then I’d pop some waterproof trousers/dungarees over the top, you can buy fleece lined ones. The issue with anything else is they’d be too warm once inside.

DS (6) just wears joggers (ASD so prefers them to jeans etc because they are softer) and DD (2.5) usually wear leggings. On the top they both have vest, t shirt and jumper/hoody then a coat and hat (sometimes gloves). We went to Legoland all day yesterday and neither complained when they were cold dressed like that.

Normal leggings with Fleece-lined splash suit or snow suit on top.

Trixieandkatya · 18/12/2023 09:00

My son wears these joggers when it's really cold in the winter, they've got a lovely thick fleece lining, and he says they're really comfy. He's 9, but they do have them in size 3/4yrs, and the best thing about uniqlo joggers is that they have that button elastic waist adjuster that you normally only find in jeans.

Knee socks rather than short ones

Libra24 · 18/12/2023 10:01

Fleece lined leggings. They are super warm. And soft and comfortable. Unless it's below freezing I don't think you need anything else. They sell them in primark and I got a black pair for my son in bnm the other day for £5.

NuffSaidSam · 18/12/2023 10:07

I'd go for a snowsuit or puddle suit or over-trousers if it's warm at nursery. If you make him warm enough for outside he's likely to be too hot all day at nursery.

C152 · 18/12/2023 10:24

My DS lived in tracksuit pants, leggings and very occasionally jeans when he was 3. On cold winter days he always wore a snow suit when we went out, or fleecy lined waterproof trousers. You could also try thermal base layers, like those sold by Lindex or Polarn O. Pyret. Lidl also sometimes have some on special.

Get him a snow or Puddle suit. It is cold currently, a Puddlesuit will cover his legs too.

TravellingT · 18/12/2023 10:40

If it's really cold- a snowsuit. On chilly days, cords, jeans or tracksuit type bottoms. On normal days leggings/tights. Thermal/lined tracksuit bottoms might suit him better!

McVittieBiscuit · 18/12/2023 16:07

Maybe knee socks under the joggers?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/12/2023 16:23

These lined trousers from Next. Similar from Tu , Boden and H&M. Thermals/tights etc were too complicated post potty training.

Redkite11 · 18/12/2023 20:13

Dillings sells lots of merino wool trousers, leggings and thermals. Some brands also sell fleece lined joggers (I think Boden does). You could also try having him wear a snowsuit on the way to nursery.

Bertiesmum3 · 18/12/2023 20:46

8 year old has only ever wears shorts, even to school 365 days a year!

Alliolly · 18/12/2023 22:03

DS used to have a couple of pairs of thick windproof trouser, lined with cotton. Corduroys are a good choice for the winter too.

Now he's in a school uniform (reception) he just wears tights or thermal leggings plus thick socks on colder days.

EmmyA87 · 19/12/2023 07:34

I’ve just invested in the heat tech range from Uniqlo for my 3. My youngest-aged 6-refuses to wear a coat on the playground, just his fleece! So he’ll wear the long sleeve under his school shirt and the leggings under his trousers. The first day he wore them he said “I felt like I had a hot water bottle under me”.
