DH has made his annual announcement

He definitely going to send Christmas cards. Every year the week before Christmas he declares this so I now know we are truly in the Christmas season.
He has never sent cards out in time, most years not at all. He will buy cards though, which I occasionally gather up and give away.
He did once send a bunch of cards in January though!

I'd be quite pleased to receive an extra Christmas card in January 🤣

LeggyLegsEleven · 15/12/2023 10:39

I don’t think the elderly ladies in his family have been 😂

By Friday next week DH will have announced that he is going to bake homemade mince pies.

Never once in 15 years has he ever actually made mince pies.

Every year, without fail DH posts his cards on 24/12.

Why?! 🤔

LeggyLegsEleven · 15/12/2023 10:43

DH also once wrote and sent postcards after we had been on holiday.

At least the ones on the 24th would arrive over the holidays.

Good to know my dp is not alone in his declaration, I receive the declaration of card writing today, he said he needs 100 cards to send them to friends from school as well as every member of both our families ( including the children) dp has never written a card in the 5 years we’ve been together not even for my birthday or our anniversary so this will be entertaining to see. Funny enough, this is the first year I’ve not bothered writing any cards because I don’t see the point anymore.

HoHoHoliday · 17/12/2023 02:32

I'd be happy to receive a card that had been posted on the 24th because for me Christmas Eve is the start of the holiday and I'll be celebrating Christmas for the couple of weeks afterwards. My tree and cards are up through January.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 17/12/2023 02:54

My dad had dementia and used to go to a day centre to give my mum a break. The last attendance before Christmas he'd come to me an hour before leaving and say oh I need 30 Christmas cards today. 🙄

He never signed cards in his life though, his excuse was I've only got 1 wife, daughter and son l😂

Springbaby2023 · 17/12/2023 03:38

For me I know Christmas is really here when DP declares he’s going to make homemade sausage rolls. I’ve yet to actually see him make any….

coffeestrongblacknosugar · 17/12/2023 04:52

Each year my husband says I will make the bread sauce... Ive yet to see his bread sauce, I buy M&S.

I will make sausage rolls though

Nanaof1 · 17/12/2023 06:42

For many years, my DH would announce that he is going to help me wrap Christmas gifts. I would give him piles, telling him, 'this pile is for A, this pile is for B, this pile is for C, etc.". He would proudly announce, "I'm done with this group. What's next?". I would go out to put the gifts in tote bags, only to find them all in one great big pile, sans tags. sigh

Oh dear, that sounds infuriating.

DH wrote cards for his relatives last year but didn't get round to posting them.
This year he has added addresses to those same cards.
Who knows if the stamps will be added and the cards taken to the postbox this week or whether that will be next December's task.

chaosmaker · 17/12/2023 07:08

Cards go straight in the recycling unless they have a point to them, like from people who live abroad.

That’s the spirit! /s

I did find two unopened cards from last year when I was sorting out the Xmas decs a couple of weeks ago, so they’ve gone on the string with this year’s.

I leave mine quite late because I only send to people who send to me, or to the older people in my family.

Oh dear, that sounds infuriating.

I got very good and precise with a razor blade, so I could just cut the wrap at the tape lines and peek. My favorite time was the time I put post-it notes on each gift with the recipient's name on it. He dutifully took off the post-its before wrapping, and luckily, figured it out after wrapping a half dozen gifts that he needed to either put the post-it notes back on the pkg. or write a tag.

I took it without losing my shit, because he is a wonderful guy, and we've been married 45+ years. He would just start watching TV, listening to music or going into his head and then get distracted and only concentrate on one part of it all. Now, I just give him gifts for one person at a time. So, DOH! on me for not doing that from the beginning. I guess I get distracted too.

Love it when I find one of my people 😁

Sounds like my DH who has ADHD

LlynTegid · 17/12/2023 08:13

Is your DH someone who cannot do anything other than last minute or late?

GoldenTea · 17/12/2023 08:19

Yes mine is. Often it's because he thinks something really unimportant is essential, like he wants to water the plants before we leave even if we're already late. He can't prioritise basically.

Aydel · 17/12/2023 08:37

Every year on Christmas Eve in the morning, DH will ask me what I want for Christmas and then suggest we go out and choose it. This always makes me feel like I am of little concern to him. One year I had a full on hysterical crying fit (to be fair, we had his parents, DB, DSIL and his Dad’s mate staying and it was stressful), but nothing has changed. I don’t want to choose something together. Pick something off my Amazon wish list if you have no imagination!

😂😂😂

This really made me laugh. I suppose it shows some form of diligence that he was able to remember the written cards for last year and add addresses to them!

BeyondMyWits · 17/12/2023 08:42

Mine will (not) make a chocolate yule log.

He made one one year that was a tiny bit "cake" and a shit load of melted chocolate as "icing" .... everyone loved it because it was basically 500g of dairymilk on a bit of rolled up cake. (With a sad, wonky, plastic robin on top) . Everyone talks and laughs about Dad's yule log. So he keeps promising (threatening) to make another one.

I think the tradition is having a giggle about it, rather than making one now. He is a lovely bloke and takes it all in good humour.

Pushmepullu · 17/12/2023 08:46

DH has announced that he will be making Christmas morning muffins this year. I’m hoping he will forget to look at the recipe until Christmas morning and realise we don’t have one of the ingredients and even if it was in the cupboard on Christmas Eve the bag of cranberries will have mysteriously disappeared overnight!
