Get back you bastards, I'll break your legs (lighthearted)

We've had a new CCTV system at work, very high tech, pictures amazing etc. The electrician was having a laugh and recorded said title - get back you bastards, I'll break you legs - this came on whenever someone passed a certain camera outside. Yes it's childish but it's christmas and we're all being very lighthearted.

We all found it highly amusing (I know it's the small things isn't it), but I was telling my DH and he just didn't get it.

Now DH is 9 years older than me, but from a very middle class background. I'm from a very working class background, we all went to parties at the working mens club, the WMC organised trips out to the seaside, about 10 buses went from one village. It was a mining village and my parents still live there.

So my question is (please its very lighthearted) what do you automatically think of when you read the title - are you oblivious or do you instantly know!

You don't have to comment on your background but if you are like me & DH does one of you know whilst the other one is clueless?

"The things I'm going to do to you ..." as the stair lift slowly trundles along

HectorPlasm · 15/12/2023 10:46

And we sing the black bin bags song every time we have to get them out of the cupboard

CharlottePimpernel · 15/12/2023 10:48

Jumping up and down on a love length!!

Pinkpinkpink15 · 15/12/2023 10:57

Nope, not a clue (55), haven't seen Phoenix Nights.

Costacoffeeplease · 15/12/2023 11:02

We sing the black bin bags song too 😄

countvoncount · 15/12/2023 11:06

I'd really laugh if I heard this coming from a speaker system 😂
We have an asbestos specialist who comes into our workplace and he's the most serious man ever, we nicknamed him Keith Lard!
(I know not a fire prevention fellow but the same type of guy)

I did say that it was very lighthearted - @rorret I'm sorry if this has upset you but maybe you just unfollow this thread and don't give it another thought.

Actually @rorret never said the thread is upsetting her but that something like that in RL would be very upsetting for her. She also explained why so you brushing off her disability in that way wasn’t ok Imo.

Fwiw, I agree. In a work environment, I’d have an issue with it too. A message like this, coming out of nowhere would make me jump and I’d wonder what’s going on.
If I was a customer, I wouldn’t be coming back. Sorry.

Thank you.

The thread isn't upsetting me, hasn't upset me, but if it had happened in RL yes, it would upset me.

Thank you for understanding and articulating what I couldn't about the reply from the OP - I think it was/is dismissive and rather patronising and it got my back up.

FuckingHellAdele · 15/12/2023 11:45

Love it 😂

MadamVastra · 15/12/2023 11:47

Hilarious! I really want mine to say it

Phoenix nights was amazing

Phoenix nights

IveOnlyEverHeardOutwithONHere · 15/12/2023 12:00

I know what a pissed horse looks like

Soubriquet · 15/12/2023 12:03

Wouldn’t have had a clue, and the first time I heard it (if I even heard it) I would have been a bit upset thinking they were serious but once it wore off and I realised it was a joke I would have laughed

TossieFleacake · 15/12/2023 12:06

Knew it was Phoenix Nights straight away.
In our family we use quotes from Phoenix Nights, The Inbetweeners and Alan Partridge on a daily basis. We have educated our kids well in British comedy!

familiesarrggghhhhh · 15/12/2023 09:56

Why is Phoenix Nights never repeated?? I mean it's genius in a way as you don't get bored of hearing the same jokes over and over but it does make me yearn to watch it - if only we still had a dvd player 😂 Is it available anywhere to stream?

None of Peter Kay's stuff is available to stream 😞
I bought a dvd player last year just so I could rewatch my Phoenix Nights DVD boxset!!

NoWayRoset · 15/12/2023 13:07

I'm autistic and even I dislike how some of us tend to make some things about us when they're not.

I don't see where OP has dismissed anyone's anything. She gave a sound advice imo based on misreading a post. But the advice was reasonable (if what she thought was the case) and not dismissive of anything. She didn't have to respond at all and it's unfortunate that she may have been chased out of her own thread for fear of "upsetting" people further.

To answer the OP's thread: I didn't get the reference but only because I haven't seen Phoenix Nights, not because of any class or age issue. I really don't think those things matter.

If I was a colleague and had a good relationship with everyone, I'd find it funny (after being scared out of my mind) but if not, I wouldn't because I wouldn't be able to tell if it's genuinely a joke or an ill-intentioned dig at me.

Get it a kebab!!

I know you said it was lighthearted - but some people won't get it - and I honestly don't think it was appropriate for a work setting to have a cctv yelling swear words and threatening violence?

Jesus. Let's not do anything remotely funny ever in case we offend somebody.

Nowaysunshine · 15/12/2023 13:18

Slightly off topic but whenever I go to slimming club and they say 'you've lost a pound' the phrase 'I could s**t a pound' comes to my mind. I don't say thought because I presume they wouldn't get it! On the tip of my tongue every time it happens!

DeadButDelicious · 15/12/2023 13:21

Hey toilet mouth! There's a child's bike outside!

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 15/12/2023 13:33

Shabba…

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 15/12/2023 13:34

We sing the bin bag song too 🤣

user14699084785 · 15/12/2023 13:40

Ha ha! Wonder if i can get our cameras to do the same! 😂

Peacheroo · 15/12/2023 13:58

I've not seen phoenix nights but even on its own I find it quite funny whilst also inappropriate. I'd be laughing my head off if a tannoy said that as I walked past.

Peter Kay doesn't allow his stuff to be streamed/repeated over and over as he doesn't want the jokes to become well-worn in that way. This works well because they aren't, but it's annoying because in this day and age of streaming you need to own a hard copy or have it downloaded from somewhere and available.

A line that I like to trot out is "Kids love Potter, Jerry!" Whenever Harry Potter is mentioned. Gets a laugh about one in 500 times unless I say it to my best friend.
