Get back you bastards, I'll break your legs (lighthearted)

We've had a new CCTV system at work, very high tech, pictures amazing etc. The electrician was having a laugh and recorded said title - get back you bastards, I'll break you legs - this came on whenever someone passed a certain camera outside. Yes it's childish but it's christmas and we're all being very lighthearted.

We all found it highly amusing (I know it's the small things isn't it), but I was telling my DH and he just didn't get it.

Now DH is 9 years older than me, but from a very middle class background. I'm from a very working class background, we all went to parties at the working mens club, the WMC organised trips out to the seaside, about 10 buses went from one village. It was a mining village and my parents still live there.

So my question is (please its very lighthearted) what do you automatically think of when you read the title - are you oblivious or do you instantly know!

You don't have to comment on your background but if you are like me & DH does one of you know whilst the other one is clueless?

“I want to moonwalk son but life’s a shithouse” is the one I remember. Oh and of course the Clinton baptiste one “now I’m getting the word…. Nonce”

noooooooo · 15/12/2023 09:53

lol my all time favourite is ‘it’s a twenty foot cock and balls, man!’

OMG I'd forgotten about that - brilliant!!

I always remember Mary behind the bar with the steel balls 😂

I wouldn’t have had a clue what that was and I was also brought up in a mining village (with the obligatory social club). I never watched Phoenix Nights though.

MrsMurphyIWish · 15/12/2023 09:55

Phoenix Nights!

The episode with the inflatable bouncy penis (which was turned into a snake) for the kid's fun day is one of my favourite comedy moments!

familiesarrggghhhhh · 15/12/2023 09:56

Why is Phoenix Nights never repeated?? I mean it's genius in a way as you don't get bored of hearing the same jokes over and over but it does make me yearn to watch it - if only we still had a dvd player 😂 Is it available anywhere to stream?

Oh and ‘Ave you ever kissed a girl?’ when someone’s boring on about something. We also used to call our would-be lothario neighbour Dink Dank Do, had basically forgotten where all these came from until I read this thread😂

Agree. I have them on DVD but no player. Off work today with a very sick child so would have been great to put on!

MrsMurphyIWish · 15/12/2023 09:59

Ray Von, "scream if you want to go faster" (to toddlers on a very slow merry-go-round).

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/12/2023 10:03

I would find that intimidating, not funny. Haven't seen PN. Am with your DH.

YouStupidGirl · 15/12/2023 10:03

I loved Phoenix nights and don’t remember that bit but I’d have found it hilarious anyway!

TheGhostOfTheOpera · 15/12/2023 10:09

I did say that it was very lighthearted - @rorret I'm sorry if this has upset you but maybe you just unfollow this thread and don't give it another thought.

Actually @rorret never said the thread is upsetting her but that something like that in RL would be very upsetting for her. She also explained why so you brushing off her disability in that way wasn’t ok Imo.

Fwiw, I agree. In a work environment, I’d have an issue with it too. A message like this, coming out of nowhere would make me jump and I’d wonder what’s going on.
If I was a customer, I wouldn’t be coming back. Sorry.

TheGhostOfTheOpera · 15/12/2023 10:11

Btw @familiesarrggghhhhh what is the point of starting this thread to say how much you are having over a prank of you are refusing to listen to the fact that some people would not find it amusing at all?

I mean you could have started a thread on that série itself and it would have been lighthearted and funny etc…
The prank itself it so much. I’m totally with your DH there (And it has nothing to do with being MC or WC etc… either!!)

My DH did find it funny, he just didn't get the reference

I'm WMC through and through those characters are so accurate and do still exist, so yeah I instantly got it 😂

MrsMurphyIWish · 15/12/2023 10:15

I am so hoping your electrician recorded it in a northern accent.

Phoenix Nights: Get back you bastard car alarm

get back you bastard ill break your legs

XpelairHamPortal · 15/12/2023 10:16

The theft of the TV (and remote control) is my favourite bit of the series Grin

I would have got the joke, OP, though I can see why it might give people a bit of a startle if they hadn't seen the series. I guess it's a case of knowing your audience, and if the only people likely to encounter the alarm are either in the know or up to no good, I can't see the harm in it.

Megifer · 15/12/2023 10:22

"Just you wait.. ..the things I'll do to you" as he's going upstairs on his stairlift at minus 5 mph 🤣

BobbinThreadbare123 · 15/12/2023 10:23

I loved Phoenix Nights and I say this phrase every time I have to reverse the works van 😆

Xyyxxx · 15/12/2023 10:23

I've no idea but I think it's funny.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 15/12/2023 10:24

My DP say this all the time but I don’t know where it came from.

I loved PN (Jerry the Berry!) but can’t remember this saying.

Im much more WC than DP and went to WMC but he is northern and I’m not.

procrastinationismyhobby · 15/12/2023 10:29

Knew it straight away! 😂😂 Love it!

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 15/12/2023 10:31

Surely your DH didn't get it because he hasn't seen it 🫤 If I didn't know the quote I might find it mildly amusing but I wouldn't get it and find it really funny.

DH and I both loved Phoenix Nights and quote from it all the time, "Can y'ear me nuw? 'Ear ya, I can see ya, ya dick" almost daily as his phone reception is so shite!
We have pretty different backgrounds one of us but we find it hilarious.

bookworm14 · 15/12/2023 10:40

Phoenix Nights!! I say this phrase to myself every time I hear a lorry/van play one of those ‘BEEP this vehicle is reversing’ messages (and am middle class, if it’s relevant…).

Also ‘STRANRAER??’
