A pre-festivities sharpener of Mornington Crescent?

Unfortunately I was absent for the thrilling climax to the game yesterday, and offer belated congratulations to LlynTegid. It's not often you see that move deployed with such laser-like accuracy.
A last hurrah before we all disperse for our traditional mid-winter break? (I'm for the Canaries this year with the curate and his new-ish special friend, a dear young man).
I'll start us off with a good invigorating Hudson's Cast: Goodge Street.

Oh do call me Maud, Seaside1234. I just know we’re going to be great friends (unless, of course, you play Euston on the down draft).

Swiss Cottage

MarkWithaC · 17/07/2024 13:49

NO ONE plays Euston on the down draft, do they? Not in an odds year, anyway.

And welcome back, Duck! In the version I heard, there was no hurdy gurdy but present were the mayor's personal assistant and a Camembert. Whatever the truth, it sounds like a rather good party.

Well, I've seen it done but it's not for polite company.

Canning Town

LlynTegid · 17/07/2024 18:23

I think we can venture south of the river to Bermondsey.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 18/07/2024 00:46

Not for polite company might, perhaps, be the very motto of the game of games or, at least, some of the unlicensed tournaments, which can (as some of us know to our cost) be a little, ahem, disinhibited. Speaking of which,

Gants Hill

Seaside1234 · 18/07/2024 08:26

The mind boggles.

Elephant and Castle

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 18/07/2024 11:15

Boggle is a very entertaining game but not, I venture to say, on the level or scale of the game of games.

Warwick Avenue

LlynTegid · 18/07/2024 12:17

Willesden Junction. Near to a bus depot where they allegedly play some of these inferior games.

Seaside1234 · 18/07/2024 13:24

Well, since that makes the DLR trumps, Canary Wharf

MarkWithaC · 18/07/2024 17:22

I went to an unlicensed tournament in Portslade some time ago (the gamekeeper and his wife talked me into it).
It was fine. Although I still can't quite face a tombola.

Royal Albert

I have similar misgivings about tombolas. Some things should be left to village fetes of the past.

Beckton DLR.

DuckonaBike · 19/07/2024 07:08

Please, enough talk about tombolas. I’m not ready to confront the memories yet.

East India

HazelBite · 19/07/2024 09:37

I feel some stability is required here so using a Henderson's reverse I'm going for Baker Street

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 19/07/2024 10:15

Ooh. How elegant. How inspiring.

Great Portland Street

MarkWithaC · 19/07/2024 16:01

Sorry, Duck. I'll leave it.

That IS a lovely move, Hazel. The old chair of the local WI (of sainted memory and excellent home-made sloe gin) used to play like that. I do miss her gin. I miss her too, obviously.

Theydon Bois

LlynTegid · 21/07/2024 09:30

I think that it is too early for gin or other alcoholic beverages. Early consumption was part of the issue at the 1971 tournament.

Using the closed lines rule I move to Ongar.

Seaside1234 · 21/07/2024 11:21

I never play as well after a snifter or two.

Rayner's Lane

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 21/07/2024 11:36

I, though, have found that I am often at my most inspired after a snifter or two. The creme de menthe and absinthe cocktails served at the after hours lock-in at last year’s quarter-finals took my game to a whole new level.

Mill Hill East

DuckonaBike · 21/07/2024 17:19

I’m glad to hear it Maud; all I can say is that you did well to stay away from the Buckfast Tonic Wine.

Goodge Street

Seaside1234 · 21/07/2024 23:27

Torn between envy and relief I couldn't make that particular event.

Borough

LlynTegid · 22/07/2024 08:40

Wine and the game of games together are a no-no for me.

Elephant and Castle

MarkWithaC · 22/07/2024 17:54

I wasn't at last year’s quarter-finals either, but I heard some very interesting stories about the first violin and the owner of the dog-walking company. As far as I could gather, those cocktails were involved, as was the vicarage's lily pond.

A reverse Fardingham to

Lovely bit of work @MarkWithaC , neatly done! Setting up the pass to Surrey Quays

HazelBite · 23/07/2024 09:03

I think I'm going with the Piccadilly connection, and taking that Fardingham into account I'm suggesting Manor House

MarkWithaC · 23/07/2024 09:46

Very kind, Seaside. I learned it from the last-but-one county treasurer in quiet moments at the 2002 Exeter convention. When she wasn't distracted by the apprentice tree surgeon.
