When does everyone break up for Christmas? We finish on 22/12 at 3.30pm and it seems so late!

I've got three dc in three different schools. I have one breaking up in 20 minutes, one midday Tuesday and one on Wednesday.

I hope he's leaning in to the domestic load and isn't swanning about you on holiday mode @Jaxtellersoldlady14?

It's Friday lunchtime (they always finish at lunchtime on Fridays) here too. It feels really late, the teachers must be loving it! 🙄 Then they're back on Tues 9th Jan which leaves a whole week after New Year when there's not a lot happening. It feels like Tues/Wed next week and go back midweek would have been better spread out.

Beezknees · 15/12/2023 13:30

DS finishes on the 22nd at normal time of 2.55. It was the same last year and the year before it was the 23rd. Back on 8th Jan. Doesn't seem particularly late to me, it's always been between the 18th-22nd where we are.

My nanny children finished today at 12. I finish on Tuesday morning, we’re all back the 9th January.

whichwaytohome · 15/12/2023 19:20

I live in Bucks. The three grammar schools in my town finished at lunchtime today (so DD is now off), the secondaries in the town finish on 19th. Not sure why the grammars have finished early, but it's nice to have time to go out with DD without hordes of kids everywhere.

I'm pretty sure most go back on January 4th. I've never known Christmas break begin 10 days before Christmas before.

ivfbabymomma1 · 15/12/2023 19:25

I work at my son's school and we both break up on Friday and go back on the 8th! I'd rather have the build up off than the first week of Jan but it is what it is

sukisuky · 15/12/2023 19:28

Break up today and back 8th of jan

ChilledToTheBone · 15/12/2023 19:28

15th until 2nd

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/12/2023 19:33

Friday 22nd. Was later last year and we finished on the 23rd.

No idea why they plan for full last weeks or full first weeks back for the pupils. They are hyper that close to Christmas, and tired in the first week back.

We have a bonus half day early finish, which we have never had before though.

needlesandhaystacks · 15/12/2023 20:28

Friday 22nd for myself and kids. I hate it, I want to enjoy the time doing lovely Christmassy things with my children before Christmas, I couldn't give two hoots about January.

That's ridicuous!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/12/2023 21:46

Why ridiculous? It's how I felt when mine were little. I liked a few non-weekend school holiday days to do last minute bits but also to do some Christmassy things before the big day.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 15/12/2023 21:50

Break up from work at 4pm on 22nd, family children break up at 3.15pm on the same day. I have a few days off between Christmas and New Year. The late school break up and a longer break after is so much better IMO. I've found that children aren't so hyper if they're in school later. Otherwise, they end up practically feral by Christmas Day! Keeping them in school longer seems to keep them that bit calmer.

That's my experience.

It's just personal choice. I prefer the time after Christmas Day but some people prefer the pre-Christmas break. It's not ridiculous, it's just preference.

what do you do after the 2nd - unless you ski everything is shut. Christmas stuff has finished.

All2Well · 15/12/2023 21:57

I'm a lecturer, I've finished teaching today but will be marking and planning for next semester until our official leave starts on the 22nd. We're due back for admin on the 3rd and I start teaching again on the 8th.

This is actually the shortest break I've had since I started lecturing and I feel like my university holidays when I was a student were endless...I'm sure they were at least a month if not longer.

SgtJuneAckland · 15/12/2023 21:58

I'm on call until 7am Christmas morning, then have Christmas day and boxing day off.

We've got birthdays on the 3rd, 4th and 7th. I used to have to go back to school on my birthday, I used to hate it! For me, it's not about doing Christmassy stuff, it's about having a decent amount of time off work and school together.

Like I said, it's all personal.

Yes, that’s quite personal to you.

m the last time one of our schools a late finish they had more complaints than about that than anything else that year at the parent’s forum.

It's curious, really. Most people I know prefer the late finish, due to the children going bonkers when they're trying to finish everything off. Your experience is entirely different. It's another one of those "you can't please everyone all the time" situations.

Lancasterel · 15/12/2023 22:22

We finish next Weds 20th, back on 8th (me) and 9th (kids).
Last year we finished on the equivalent Friday as today (think it was 16th) and it was lush having so much time to unwind before Christmas.
I’ll miss that this year, but will feel very smug when those I know who broke up today have to go back to work on 2nd January!
