Saw an XL Bully puppy today

And he was absolutely gorgeous. He was a gorgeous light tan colour with green eyes. Must have been about 12 weeks old.

I went over to ask if I can stroke him, owner was very nice but clearly drunk and took out a can of cider whilst we chatted. Puppy was so friendly but seemed flinchy with the bloke.

It's just made me really sad and worried for his future. I can't see this man complying with muzzle or lead rules. Or training him well really.

I was quite supportive of the ban but meeting one IRL has made me sad. That little puppy could be the best behaved boy on the world with the right owners.

Yes, but sadly that’s not his situation. Poor baby- but equally worry for the people and pets he’ll bump into when he’s older.

TiredEvenForAPhoenix · 14/12/2023 16:29

You saw a cute puppy. All puppies are cute. The huge, powerful dogs that tear grown men to shreds in the street were once cute puppies. It's what they grow into that matters - and XL bullies are badly bred and unstable with the capacity to kill adults. A cute puppy doesn't change that.

Exactly this.

Even Hitler was a cute little baby once.

Yes. I know you're right.

I guess I'm angry at the man for taking him on.

Be angry at the irresponsible breeder.

CoatOfArms · 14/12/2023 17:08

Well no. Because these dogs are inherently much more dangerous than other types of dog. The chances of it being "the best behaved boy in the world" are minimal, whoever the owner.

And yes, speaks volumes about the sorts of idiots who are still buying these dogs knowing that a ban is iminent.

I work in substance misuse and these poor dogs seem to be the new status dogs. The majority of the families I support have them. I feel so sorry for them as they are not treated right at all.

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 14/12/2023 17:14

I feel worse for the innocent people who are victims of dog attacks.

Lots of stuff keeps popping up on my Facebook re trying to find homes for XL Bullies that haven’t been socialised or whatever and “ just need a chance” & so many people commenting saying someone save them, I find it quite shocking

My friend was attacked by one and her dog (who was the sweetest calmest adult dog I’ve ever met!) was killed by one.

The owners were irresponsible.

All of the decent dog owners I know think very carefully about the breed of dog they bring home. Sadly too many irresponsible people own very violent dogs. Sometimes there is a dark reason behind it.

Comedycook · 14/12/2023 17:59

In the grand scheme of sad things in the world, this ranks pretty low.

ChristmasPuddingPie · 14/12/2023 18:02

I can’t stand dogs so sorry no sympathy here

LaLaLouella · 14/12/2023 18:10

Nope, one cute little puppy does not change the fact it will grow up to be large and dangerous. They all need PTS immediately and anyone caught breeding them heavily fined.

OhmygodDont · 14/12/2023 18:52

I saw a cute one today op a huge thing and I said aww what a cute puppy well not puppy but yeah. The owner goes no his a puppy. 😬 he was fully on lead and had been muzzle trained as he was wearing one but the sheer size for a puppy despite its lovely colouring give me heebies

superplumb · 15/12/2023 09:15

Puppy seemed scared of owner drinking and drunk while out with puppy. Says it all really doesn't it. Wait a year and it'll be destroyed when it attacks someone

Mindymomo · 15/12/2023 09:27

There’s a puppy in next road to ours, 2 brothers own it, one still at school, the other about 20. Quite nice lads, got the puppy 1 week before the announcement of the ban, but I said surely you saw the ban coming. It’s now about 4/5 months old and bigger than my 5 year old border collie. I really feel for these dogs, apparently you cannot get pet insurance for them and vet’s won’t be insured to see them. I’ve already seen a couple of local Facebook requests for rehoming.

BodgerSparkins · 15/12/2023 09:36

I have already met two people, one with small children in tow, who have purchased cane corso puppies 'instead'. Looked totally bemused when I whether they had looked into local trainers yet, first time owner. So it goes on.

CoatOfArms · 15/12/2023 09:46

Agree that it's like wack-a-mole, as soon as they ban of of those awful types of dog, the idiots just move onto something else. There needs to be a better way of regulating who has a dog, and dealing quickly and efficiently with any aggressive animal. Huge fines for owners/breeders and put aggressive and dangerous animals down, no questions asked.

Agreed. Pretty sure one of these pups also lives in a flat. It's bonkers that people would put themselves in this situation, let alone thinking of anyone else.

Mrsttcno1 · 15/12/2023 09:54

They can be absolutely lovely dogs, it does feel like the ban punishes the wrong end of the lead in many ways.

I don’t personally have one but there are quite a few that live near us which are all lovely dogs and play with my Lab as well as other dogs in the local park, our dog walker currently has some on group walks, and there’s a local doggy daycare which has a few as members. All perfectly behaved dogs with lovely nature, and it does seem a real shame that in a few weeks time they can no longer go out with the dog walker, they aren’t allowed at the day care, they won’t be able to run around off lead in the park with the other dogs as they have been for their whole lives. The owners of those we know are all responsible owners, the dogs are neutered and have been since they were pups, and most of them are actually now already muzzle trained to comply with the legislation etc. It’s those owners who have genuinely put the time and effort into training etc I feel sorry for, because they have actually raised lovely dogs, and now because of the idiots who have bought them they are all tarred with the same brush.

Baffledandalarmed · 15/12/2023 10:02

Agree with PPs that it’s going to grow up, as 99% of the breed do, to be dangerous.

You’ve just got to hope that they kill the owner instead of an innocent child or adult passing by.

Sure there will be another breed next. Probably a CC or some sort of guardian breed (seen a few of them recently). But, ultimately, you can’t change someone’s spots and scumbags will always buy dogs more predisposed to violence and aggression. There’s a reason these people don’t buy cocker spaniels or labradors!

thetworonnies · 15/12/2023 10:09

How many XLs are there in the UK?

Edited

Does sound like corsos will be the next 'in' breed, another breed very few people in very specific set ups should even consider, banned in many countries and I imagine very expensive to insure. Sigh.
