So DP has started to look for rings (exciting!)
Its got me feeling all nostalgic and loved up. I love seeing propsals online but they are all so staged looking. Please share your lovely proposal stories!

In woodland that surrounded his great grandparents house, it was kept on as a holiday home and we were alone there. We had been to a black tie do on the way down so dressed back up in our evening wear and had dinner together that night dressed up and got a bit tipsy. It was a really lovely house set in a few acres, the family sold it a few years ago so I can’t revisit my proposal place. We didn’t tell anyone for three days and the next day we drove in to the nearest city to choose a ring together. His family joined us for the last day and we had an engagement dinner.

We talked about getting married, having already booked a holiday for four weeks time, we decided in a whim to get married there. Had an amazing time just the two of us, one of my favourite memories. Our family and friends were so happy for us.

WinchSparkle80 · 14/12/2023 09:03

Well he had bought a ring, picked it up whilst I got my nails done and we went to the pub, had a glass of wine. he was so excited, showed me the ring. We then went back to his, and he got down on one knee in the kitchen- 16 years ago today!

In Paris. We’d booked a weekend away for my 25th birthday, he proposed in the hotel room as soon as we arrived.

GMsAWinner · 14/12/2023 09:15

DH had originally planned to ask me on my birthday, but bottled out. He'd planned to take me away the following weekend, so then moved his plan to the weekend, with no idea when he'd ask. Sounds a bit tacky, but we went to see the crown jewels, sounds a bit tacky but he just came out with, 'you're far more precious that any of these jewels, will you marry me?'.

return2sender · 14/12/2023 09:17

Christmas Day. We'd just bought our first house. Ring box was in a bigger box, that was in another box and that was inside another box etc - you get the picture. It was magical. We got married the following November 🥰

trevthecat · 14/12/2023 09:25

I had always wanted to go to John O'Groats and when (now) dh had to work up that way for a month he suggested I fly out for the weekend and we do a bit of a tour of the area. We went to the village and then for a walk along the coast and he got down on one knee! I acted surprised but I knew it was coming!! He was acting strange all morning!! It was low key, just us and perfect!

That was 2019, covid delayed a wedding so in 2021 we eloped back up to Scotland to Edinburgh! Turns out that was the best decision for us!

cctvrec · 14/12/2023 09:34

8 years in, it was my birthday and the kids had just gone to bed. DH called me in saying the girls had one more present. I went in and they handed me an open Amazon box and I figured it would just be some doll or playdoh from their bedroom or something. I opened it to find a ring box and turned to ask WTF. DH was down on one knee holding our newborn son and asked me to marry him. So my proposal was perfect as all our kids were involved. The wedding was perfect too because our 8 and 5yo daughters were the most amazing flower girls and toddling DS (and his trusted best friend teddy) was the best behaved, cutest in a kilt "real best man and not uncle xxxx" you could wish for.

SheIsStuck23 · 14/12/2023 09:38

I was sitting in the living room watching some naff quiz show with a cup of tea, he came home from work and as soon as he got in he just got down on one knee in front of the TV and proposed with the most beautiful ring!!

I was absolutely gob smacked as it was so unexpected.

But I absolutely loved the fact that I had no idea that it was coming, it made it even more special.

The place where wet had just gained a license to conduct weddings, I joked that we should get married there so my boyfriend asked if it was available on our anniversary, again as a bit of a joke. The next day we were both like “shall we book it” neither of us were entirely sure (after all there wasn’t a grown up around the make the decision), we did book it and it tooo us maybe two weeks to realise that shit, we’re getting married and we accidentally tricked ourselves into doing it.

These are all so sweet, but this might be my favourite! Especially the 'there wasn't a grown up around to make a decision' bit!

YaWeeFurryBastard · 14/12/2023 09:43

Before I even opened this thread I knew it would be competitive low-key proposals 😂.

My husband took me on a surprise trip to a romantic city abroad and arranged a beautiful private venue and a stunning ring. This is considered seriously uncool on mumsnet I think 😂.

😂

I guess he just loved you a lot more than our partners loved us 😂😂

CMOTDibbler · 14/12/2023 09:45

We were in bed and he said 'so, do you want to get married?' (we'd had some discussions about what we were thinking of in our relationship, and didn't live together at the time). We then spent two magical weeks secretly looking at rings and deciding on what sort of wedding we were going to have before we told anyone. He did get down on one knee when we picked up the ring.
Married 26 years now

My DP proposed this year in Costa Rica and we had a rainforest pool villa. On our second last day of the trip, we were relaxing in our room with a few drinks before my DP “spotted” a sloth in the tree 🦥 I did have my suspicions that something was going to happen, however, also believed the sloth was there as we had already seen them that day! DP nudged me forward and pointed to the non existent sloth before I turned round and he was down on one knee.

Once we had calmed down and the place maker ring was on my finger, the golf buggy arrived to take us for champagne whilst the sun went down. By chance we were serenaded by the most wonderful singer and finished the day off with a food and wine tasting, live music and a drunken dive into our private pool.

Got home and picked out my ring 😍

GnomeDePlume · 14/12/2023 09:54

We were talking over dinner about my DB's upcoming wedding and what we would do differently. Afterwards we were washing up and I said 'shall we do it then?'. He said 'yes' so we did.

Been married 32 years. If I had left it to him we probably wouldn't be married yet.

No ring though. We were poor as church mice and buying a washing machine was more important.

Vasilevich · 14/12/2023 10:03

I've been married twice and didn't have a 'proposal' for either.

It just seemed to naturally happen...that we talked about marriage as if it was a given, and at some point decided to start planning it and brought an engagement ring. It was of course exciting and romantic in itself. A 'proposal' in the midst of this would have seemed a bit odd/tick-box/staged but I think that is a personality thing. We're not the type to want hen/stag dos or some of the other standard things that seem to come with weddings either.

Daisies12 · 14/12/2023 10:04

I would never want anything that gets posted online, so naff. We were just at home having dinner, I wouldn't have wanted anything else.

ThatWriterInTheCorner · 14/12/2023 10:22

I'd just given birth by emergency C-section to our premature DD, thanks to severe pre-eclampsia. When they invited him to meet and hold his daughter, who was being cleaned down the end of the operating table, he got a brief but memorable glimpse of my internal organs as they were sewing me back up again. He'd been going to propose on Christmas Day, but he went home at 4am and came back at 6am with the ring so I would know he hadn't bought it on an impulse. When he asked me, I was hooked up to various monitors, sweaty, white as a sheet and generally looking like someone who had just had their abdomen cut open and a baby extracted. Also, I was absolutely off my face on post-operative morphine. I can honestly say I have never, ever, ever looked worse, and probably never will. And that's how I knew he really loved me.

We celebrate our 20th anniversary next year. Telling this story still makes me feel all happy inside.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 14/12/2023 10:48

In bed at uni. He'd been to a (big) family party with me that day and it hadn't put him off. I can't remember the exact words (it was almost 30 years ago) but my reply was something along the lines of "oh go on then".

Cheesy but true, I'd known I was going to marry him the day we met. That was around 3 months before and our first date was less than 2 months before we got engaged.

SwordToFlamethrower · 14/12/2023 11:15

I casually mentioned that October would be a nice time for a wedding and dh practically jumped on me in delight 😊

We went on a "holiday" to Robin Hood locations and while there, I chose an engagement ring made out of Blue John stone which he then took and hid.

Months later we took a trip to London for an anti brexit march, then that evening he took me out to dinner - to the restaurant we had our first date 6 years previously.

After dessert he casually pulled out a piece of paper with a poem he'd written, read it out, got down on one knee and proposed! The whole restaurant clapped for us and we got a glass of bubbly and a free dessert.

Was absolutely wonderful!

We ended up eloping in the end though because our wedding was cancelled due to lockdown.

Very happily married 3 years later 😊

TheBirdintheCave · 14/12/2023 11:41

We were at Blenheim Palace in August 2017. My husband took me into the secret garden bit and we sat on a bench overlooking a stream. Then he told me the story of how his dad proposed to his mum by saying 'If I asked you to marry me would you say no?' And followed it up with 'So now I have a question for you...' got down on one knee pulled out the 1930s ring he'd got from MIL and said 'If I asked you to marry me would you say yes?'

I said 'Mhmm!' Because I was crying 😂

It was perfect 🥰

OceanicBoundlessness · 14/12/2023 11:50

I said if it's not too much extra hassle do you think we should get married on the next holiday we have booked.

And he said something like yes, that's a good idea.

Globules · 14/12/2023 12:20

Officially on a bridge over a river we always walked by.

Unofficially in the front seat of a ford escort.

I had been refusing to get out of the car for a walk in two different places we loved, as it was so cold, so he proposed in the car.

nokidshere · 14/12/2023 14:40

We booked a long holiday in Portugal and were talking about it, I said "we could make it into a honeymoon" he said "yeah why not" lol - very romantic. 6 weeks later we were married. That was 36 years ago.

icebearforpresident · 14/12/2023 14:47

While lying in bed, drinking a cup of tea at 1am. We’d been at a concert and had won a competition to meet the band (Athlete) before the gig as part of a small group of fans. We’d had an amazing night and by tIme we got home we were absolutely buzzing and he just came out with it and asked me.

In fairness to my husband, proposing to me while I was in bed tipsy with a cup of tea is pretty much the perfect way he could have proposed. A big grand ‘gesture’ where he was down on one knee would have set me laughing for days.
