Hello, can I have old films recommendations please? Like Grace Kelly, Katherine Hepburn, Marlon Brandon etc..?
And where to watch them? I'm trying to find some in Netflix but I can't find any..

Thank you very much

Netflix isn't the right platform for old classic films, really.

Try Prime Video - search for Clsssic movies or the name of the actor. Some are free with Prime or adverts, others available to rent.

I loved On Golden Pond the other day. ITVX.
Lots of old stuff on there, also on BBC iPlayer.

Brief encounter

The bishops wife

The Philadelphia story / high society

An affair to remember

nettie434 · 13/12/2023 21:07

The iplayer usually has a few classic films. The Philadelphia story with Katharine Hepburn is great for a rainy/miserable Saturday afternoon.

Marlon Brando in Guys and Dolls is great. That's a good feel good musical made shortly after the original musical production.

Have you seen A Matter of Life and Death? Love it!

Jessiegirl · 13/12/2023 21:11

Arsenic and Old Lace
Bringing Up Baby
Some Like It Hot
Twelve Angry Men
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Some of my favourite films. No idea where to watch them though. Sorry

bellac11 · 13/12/2023 21:14

Some of my favourites
Night of the Hunter - Robert Mitchum
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane - Bette Davis and Joan Crawford
Sunset Boulevard
Suddenly - Joan Crawford
anything with Marilyn Monroe - Gentleman Prefer Blonds, How to Marry a Millionaire, Some LIke it Hot, Niagara
North by Northwest - Cary Grant

Theres tons more

Basically anything with Cary Grant, Bette Davis, Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Gregory Peck, James Mason

YOu cant take your eyes off actors like that, its just not the same these days.

YouTube is brilliant. I'm currently watching a Paulette Goddard film right now.

What kind of old films? I love old British films, old Hollywood. Love a good musical but cannot stand Fred Astaire. I love Gainsborough films.

Vimeo is good. Old movies is a free app. Iplayer has some great films.

I find searching "free to watch online" after an actor shows films up. I also look up an actor I like on wiki and then search for the films they've been in.

Sorry, Suddenly is with Frank Sinatra, really good and frightening

The film Im thinking of with Joan Crawford is Sudden Fear, fantastic, great twist

Destry Rides Again
Colonel Blimp

Togomalone · 13/12/2023 21:23

You are my people!

I am still fairly young but really enjoy the old movies. I thought I was weird as it’s increasingly difficult to find them on streaming platforms. Luckily have my favourites (Casablanca, Bell Book and Candle, all the classic Audrey Hepburn romcoms) on DVD.

Duh · 13/12/2023 21:25

I also love the Philadelphia Story which other posters have recommended. Just wonderful.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 13/12/2023 21:25

All the Ealing comedies:
Passport to Pimlico
Kind Hearts and Coronets
Whisky Galore

Togomalone · 13/12/2023 21:29

Look out for titles directed by Billy Wilder- he fled Germany from the Nazies before the war and made lots of the classic Hollywood movies in the 50s/60s. Double indemnity, the lost weekend, sunset boulevard, Sabrina, some like it hot, the apartment… are all some of his best films.

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/12/2023 21:35

Rear Window, North by Northwest, and Dial M For Murder - all Hitchcock, all quite brilliant.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 13/12/2023 21:36

Many of the above, would also add

The African Queen
Mr Smith goes to Washington
It's a Wonderful Life (not just at Christmas)
The Greatest Showman
The Quiet Man
Operation Petticoat
Mr Roberts
Glenn Miller story

James mason - wicked lady
Rebecca
10 little Indians
The Village of the damed.
High Noon
12 Angry Men
It's a wonderful Life
Brief Encounter
The Day the Earth stood still
A Picture of Dorian Gray.
A Christmas Carol
So many...

Some absolute black and white classics.
In the absence of computer graphics and special effect the actors had to be able......to act.

I can remember, with absolute joy my adult children watching an old black and white film with me, and that they were blown away with the acting.

Clawdy · 13/12/2023 22:41

East Of Eden
I Remember Mama
The Third Man

inappropriateraspberry · 13/12/2023 22:55

I used to love BBC2 on a Saturday afternoon. Always an old black and white movie on!

XelaM · 13/12/2023 22:58

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - with the beautiful Paul Newman and Liz Taylor 😍. It's my absolute favourite adaptation of aTennessee Williams' play. Burt Ives received an Oscar for it. He's also absolutely brilliant in this film.
