Anyone else just not feeling Christmassy?

I don't know why but my decorations are up, I've bought most of the presents but I'm just not feeling it this year yet. I have some festive things planned in the next week or so and perhaps they will help but I'm not even much in the mood for Christmas music! I just feel a bit stressed out by it all this year.

It needs to snow again

envylope · 12/12/2023 17:46

@NightmareGirl That would help, I think because it did snow then went back to warmish and wet its like we peaked too soon!

I'm like that this year. I think it because everything is being un christmased. School now has winter holiday, not christams, the christmas ads aren't christamssy etc

@idontlikealdi I don't really see any adverts and don't have kids at schools so it isn't that.

I like it to feel like Christmas!

I normally love Christmas, but the last few years I haven't been in/got into the mood at all.
Things like the Christmas ads on tv starting in October and ads for events starting - well, i think I saw one in August - DO NOT HELP. No wonder we have trouble getting into it ... It's either a 'ignore as it's too early' or 'oh, that is kind of now' ... Taken over by the ads for sales beginning on Christmas Day when we might sort of be - er - IN it.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 12/12/2023 17:55

Me but only because my mum died three weeks ago 😢.
I will make the magic happen for my children at Christmas I just need a little more time.

Justonedayatatime11 · 12/12/2023 17:58

Me. Normally love Christmas, drive DH up the wall by starting far too early every year. And this year, nothing. Presents bought for DD and DH, but I just don't care about anything else. It's actually upsetting me as I can't work out why I've become the grinch!

envylope · 12/12/2023 18:03

@eatdrinkandbemerry So sorry for you loss and yes that would make Christmas very hard indeed and it is too soon. I hope you manage to snatch a few lovely moments with your Children when Christmas is actually here 💐

I never feel like it's nearly Christmas until I'm freezing in a church noticing that the crib statues could use a clean and singing Oh Come oh come Emmanuel while wondering if the first advent candle will make it through to midnight mass.

If you are protestant perhaps a brass band would do it?

Iheartmysmart · 12/12/2023 18:16

@eatdrinkandbemerry I’m so sorry for your loss 💐, Christmas is so tough when you’ve lost a loved one.

I lost my dad not long before Christmas last year and this year have just lost my little dog. Nowhere near as serious as losing a parent I know but putting up the tree without chasing the daft mutt around my flat trying to get tinsel and other decorations off him just isn’t the same.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/12/2023 18:56

Totally unxmassy. DH has a tricky issue to deal with which is dragging on, away from home, I'm going down to help him at weekends. This means we're going to miss a couple of Xmas dinners and the neighborhood gathering.
Xmas tree and decorations are in the loft and I can't get them down alone. Haven't bought anything except one beanie hat and the (as yet unwritten) Xmas cards.

Dd will be coming home so I'd better get my finger out but I'm really not in the mood.

No I'm a catholic, our church no longer does midnight mass sadly, that was magical.

I'm usually Big Christmas by now but this year I'm finding it really hard. I've bought all the presents, put up decorations but I am just not feeling it. I live alone and work in retail (so full on Christmas there), we've had our Christmas do...

I wonder if it's the relentless grey, wet weather? Perhaps if we have some frosty sharp days with some winter sun it might feel more seasonal?

Stress101 · 12/12/2023 19:53

I'm the same. We built a beautiful extension last year that wasn't fully finished for Christmas. This year its all completed, tree up, decorations up, presents all bought but I'm still very meh about Christmas. Usually I would have the Christmas radio station on 24/7 but when Wham, Last Christmas came on the radio today I turned it of.

DrCoconut · 12/12/2023 19:55

I haven't felt it for a few years. I had a spectacularly shitty Christmas a few years ago with my ex and any enthusiasm I may have had just withered on the vine i think. I go through the motions for the kids but I'd happily not bother if I could.

Oh midnight mass is at 9pm with us now because the priests are old, and having it at midnight meant it was full of the after pub closing crowd.

But any advent mass or carol concert should help. I'm a total non-believer but it connects you back to your childhood and Christmas past.

WinterNamechange · 12/12/2023 19:58

I felt like this last year, just couldn’t get into the Christmas spirit at all. But excited for it this year and no major difference in my life between this year and last - I guess we just all have off years!

Definitely not! It messes up travel plans !

SkankingWombat · 12/12/2023 22:11

Same here OP, although I've felt like this for the last few years too until a day or two before. Previously I would be in full festive swing from 1st Dec. However, DD1 said similar a few days ago so perhaps it isn't just me feeling flatter and lower than I should be? I'm doing a big push this week to get the rest of the decs up (wasn't possible before due to building work) in an effort to make it feel more festive for both of us. I plan to start cracking open a few of the stashed Xmas food bits this weekend too... And possibly do a few canapés under the guise of taste testing for Xmas day.

It sounds like you’ve put a lot of thought and effort into getting ready, so it's completely okay to not feel fully in the spirit yet.

Sometimes, the holiday season can bring unexpected stress, and with so much to plan and prepare, it can feel overwhelming instead of festive.

Hopefully, the upcoming activities you have planned will help lift your mood and bring some of that holiday cheer. Maybe taking a little break to relax, or even finding one small tradition you enjoy, could help ease the stress.

And remember, you’re not alone—many people feel this way, and the holiday spirit often sneaks up when you least expect it!

Iliketulips · 12/11/2024 15:03

Have to admit I don't really enjoy Christmas. I go through it to keep everyone else happy. We've got other things on our minds right now, so neither of us have got focused on cards/presents/plans, but there's still plenty of time.
