Why can't the Tories spilt from the far right wing nutters and become more sensible again?

Just that really. Most of the likeable, sensible, conservative Conservatives have long gone. I don't want to be governed by spitting, posturing, spiteful, greedy toddlers anymore now.

Why can't the tories just fuck off?

TheThingIsYeah · 12/12/2023 13:20

Who are the "far" right wing nutters, OP?

WhisperGold · 12/12/2023 13:20

Because the party members, who elect leader, are aging, reactionary right wingers.

Well yes, but I was trying to work with what we already have and find something more tolerable.

I'm probably thinking of certain members of the ERG group who I've seen on my TV screen most recently.

I read that Boris is looking to make a comeback with Farage as his side kick. They are beyond delusional.
And Rishi still pursuing the appalling Rwanda policy. The party is beyond saving and are heading towards a political desert where they will remain for a long time

SunnieShine · 12/12/2023 13:31

I guess for the same reason Labour can't split from the far left wing nutters and become more sensible again.

Quite!

CuriousGeorge80 · 12/12/2023 13:34

I guess the main issue the Tories have is that their membership pretty much pick the leader and so the top players have to pander to that group, and as time goes on that membership group is just becoming further right wing. That’s all I can think because their policies are so far removed from what makes them electable and I just can’t really think they are that delusional. At the very least they must be able to see the polls that tell them they are unelectable.

This is true as well. We need to get back to the centre ground.

WhisperGold · 12/12/2023 18:29

Which left wing nutters were you thinking of?

LlynTegid · 12/12/2023 20:26

I'd prefer a voting system that ends one party governments.

Lilithlogic · 12/12/2023 20:29

They must have decent talent somewhere. This constant regurgitation of old faces is ridiculous.

It was better in the late 90s and 2000s when they were unelectable.

'Sensible' Tories like Cameron and George got them back in government to wreck the country.

Bring in PR

Correct . The left wing nutters are every bit and sometimes even more dangerous 😡

pointythings · 12/12/2023 20:53

Labour has done a far better job of purging its lunatic fringe and moving towards the centre than the Tories have done with their wingnuts. The Tory wingnuts are running the show, to the point where swathes of normal moderate people won't vote for them any more. The polls haven't shifted for a year. May they long dwell in the wilderness after the next GE.

You mean become red Tories
?

I don't think there are any solutions to the problems in the UK.

RudsyFarmer · 12/12/2023 20:56

I wish all parties could split from their extremist elements and give sensible people more options of who to vote for.

I agree.

MargaritaThyme · 12/12/2023 20:58

Because the views of those MPs represent the views of many of their constituents, who generally live & work outside London or university cities.

People who want much lower taxes, little or no immigration, a smaller state which interferes less in people’s lives, proper law enforcement, an end to the war on motorists, who think Net Zero & ‘woke’ are bullshit, who think people with a functioning set of wedding tackle are not women etc etc are as entitled as any else to have their views represented in Parliament.

pointythings · 12/12/2023 21:01

MissyB1 · 12/12/2023 20:58

I agree.

Me too. People warn against the evils of PR, but even with what happened in the Netherlands recently it's superior and more democratic. Not only did swathes of people vote for Geert Wilders (which makes me ashamed to be Dutch, but that's a different thread), but the coalition process is likely to defang his party in a fairly serious way - mitigating the extremes.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/12/2023 21:05

Because to not focus on immigration would leave them open to focusing on the shit hole they’ve made of this countries services, possibly admit the money they’ve bled from
society to fund their rich friends they don’t want to!

I miss the Rory Stewart’s of the party though!

Cellotapedispenser · 12/12/2023 21:06

Unpopular view but as long as we pay MPs so poorly we'll never get decent people. Smart well educated people can earn double and triple an MPs salary in business so we only get mps from already wealthy funded backgrounds or people funded by dodgy people with nefarious aims.

The hours are totally anti women and families with so many votes late into the night that all we're left with is establishment private school chaps with wives at home to support. I was staggered to find out women MPs don't get maternity leave ffs.

Ifailed · 12/12/2023 21:06

Tories have always had a hard right, nothing new about that.

underneaththeash · 12/12/2023 22:03

You need a far right to balance the communists in the labour party.

Balance (generally) is good as it makes people on the extremes of politics feel represented and keeps the majority of the policitians in the centre. We just need to make sure they don't get into power.
