Why can't the Tories spilt from the far right wing nutters and become more sensible again?

Just that really. Most of the likeable, sensible, conservative Conservatives have long gone. I don't want to be governed by spitting, posturing, spiteful, greedy toddlers anymore now.

I guess for the same reason Labour can't split from the far left wing nutters and become more sensible again.

Exactly

They effectively have though. Corbyn is out of Labour, Corbynism effectively goes with him, bar a group of backbenchers.

Starmer's cabinet is very moderate, there's few left wingers in it. If Labour win a big majority then the left will get the same shrift they did from Blair with his landslides.

The Tories won a landslide and went further right. That's a big difference.

Because thanks to them and their pet press the 'Overton Window' of what is acceptable has been pushed over to the right so that it's now seen as 'common sense' that:

  • All immigration is terrible and bad
  • It's people's own fault they are poor and they'll just have to deal with it
  • Rich because they are better human beings and work harder than others
  • Talking about a same sex couple is an 'adult topic' but somehow talking about heterosexual couple isn't
  • Haven't women's rights gone a bit too far now?
  • Benefits are free money given to lazy people to live a life of luxury

And so on
