My daughter received a Christmas cheque today for £10 from my parents today and made me realise just how long it is since I have used a cheque. I think it must be over 5 years ago - what do you use cheques for and can anyone beat me at 5 years?

I think it must be at least 10 years. I don't have a cheque book.

ChessieFL · 12/12/2023 08:40

18m ago for something at DC’s school that I didn’t have cash for. The one before that was almost 4 years ago. I get them quite regularly though because if I pay for something for my mum, she doesn’t do online banking so pays me back via cash or cheque if she doesn’t have the cash.

NonSequentialRhubarb · 12/12/2023 08:43

I use cheques for wedding gifts. I think we had to use one to pay the nursery deposit. That's it though.

NoNoNanette · 12/12/2023 08:43

Sister sent a cheque to the Central Family Court to get a copy (well, 3, actually) of a Decree Absolute from 1983.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 12/12/2023 08:44

2011

Papyrophile · 12/12/2023 08:50

I still use them, infrequently, usually to pay the initial deposit on a construction project.

My parents gave me a cheque for my birthday, it was incredibly kind of them but three months later it's still in my drawer because I don't actually know what to do with it.
I do all my banking online, there are very few branches open and I can't get to them because I'm at work when they're open 🤷🏽‍♀️
I realise this is not insurmountable but it feels like a big extra hassle somehow.

(And yes I do realise I'm being a brat!)

You go to your banks app and take a photo of the cheque.

I don't actually have a cheque book with my bank account. I haven't written a cheque in ages, but had to write one for DVLA earlier this year. I got my husband to write one from his account.

My first office job was a holiday job at the head office of a building society, and one of my tasks was to type out cheques to investment banks on a big electric typewriter. I then took the cheques, which would be for anything up to ten million pounds, up to the top floor executive suite to be signed by two of the top bosses. This was in about 1980!

BumpheadParrotfish · 12/12/2023 09:15

I needed to send a payment to DVLA a few weeks back that could only been made by either cheque or postal order. As I've not owned a cheque book for the last decade I had to make a special trip to the post office to ask them to do me a postal order - the admin fee on that wasn't particularly cheap. The whole transaction felt like going back in time by at least 25 years

Last Christmas for my DGD's savings account, and will again this year. MIL always writes cheques for birthdays and Christmas, and also paying us back for doing her car tax online.

DH used to get loads of cheques for his business, but not any more, everyone pays by cash or bank transfer. The bank charges are much lower, and most of the branches of his bank are shut anyway!

fussychica · 12/12/2023 09:18

When I donate to the foodbank as its gift aided so they get 25% more. I used to give food donations but this is easier and means they can buy what they need.

Garman · 12/12/2023 09:27

Have never used a cheque!

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 12/12/2023 09:30

To pay the window cleaner. He disappeared just before covid haven't seen him since

HandyLittleGadget · 12/12/2023 09:32

I haven't had a chequebook for more than 10 years

Username917778 · 12/12/2023 09:33

I'm 31 and I've never written a cheque.

Confuzzlediddled · 12/12/2023 09:33

I'm a scout treasurer, so write them regularly!

AuntieStella · 12/12/2023 09:39

Charity donation, last month.

I don't use them very often now, maybe a dozen times a year. For some transactions, they're still the best way

ChessieFL · 12/12/2023 09:41

You go to your banks app and take a photo of the cheque.

Not all bank apps allow paying in by cheque. My main bank doesn’t. So I have a separate current account with a different bank purely for paying in rare cheques via their app!

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 12/12/2023 09:42

15 years I'd say. Maybe more. I only ever used them to pay credit card bills.

Growlybear83 · 12/12/2023 10:17

I write three or four cheques each year, mostly to tradesmen. One of the schools I work for still pays me by cheque each term.

maslinpan · 12/12/2023 10:27

Just wrote one this morning. I have to make a large payment for an annuity and there's a daily limit on BACS payments so the cheque may actually be the quickest method.

NoNoNanette · 12/12/2023 10:32

3 years ago I had a cheque for £300 from HMRC which was a refund of income tax. Total surprise. I can't remember why they did it that way, or if they even explained the reason. Used to get the odd £25 cheque from Premium Bonds up to 6 months ago but now they will credit my account if one ever comes up.

Bippitybobbityboing · 12/12/2023 20:54

Well every day's a school day!!
My bank app does indeed allow me to pay in cheques and it's done now!

Thank you!!

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 12/12/2023 23:34

@maslinpan - you’ve just reminded me that I too wrote a cheque for someone as it would have taken too long to transfer it via BACS on my bank account.

aramox1 · 13/12/2023 03:35

This week, do it for ds's birthday so he can scan it in~ he'd never use cash! I get cheques quite often but never use them otherwise
