When is the last time you gave money via cheque?

My daughter received a Christmas cheque today for £10 from my parents today and made me realise just how long it is since I have used a cheque. I think it must be over 5 years ago - what do you use cheques for and can anyone beat me at 5 years?

I write cheques for charity donations, I still receive cheques as birthday/Christmas gifts ... I have never done any banking by internet or app. Blush

FASDE1517 · 11/12/2023 22:50

I'm late 30's and I have never written one.

Icannoteven · 11/12/2023 23:01

I last gave a cheque about 15 years ago - probably to pay my parents board and lodge. I last cashed a cheque 4 years ago, which was compensation for an out of court settlement with the NHS. I hadn’t realised that cheques still existed until then 😬

About a year ago- to put in a card on the arrival of my new great nephew.

Last used a cheque to pay for a driving fine during lockdown. I had to borrow a cheque from my in-laws as I’ve never owned a cheque book (I’m 30). Last time I received a cheque was for a small payout from my grandads will around 7 years ago.

Years ago.

BubziOwl · 12/12/2023 05:37

I've written a few for Christmas for people who I know like receiving them.

I really like cheques now that you can cash them in on your phone! I'd much sooner receive a card with a cheque than with cash that I have to take to the bank, the nearest branch of which is a 20 minute drive away.

The only other alternative is just give/receive money via bank transfer which never feels as nice. It's nice to have the physical-ness of a cheque.

Nothankyou22 · 12/12/2023 05:39

I’ve never used one, I did get one when I first opened my account but never wrote one

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 12/12/2023 05:45

I write a cheque to HMRC twice a year.
it goes in a brown envelope and gets posted second class.

Just received a new cheque book

Today.

YourNameGoesHere · 12/12/2023 06:05

Like many others on this thread I think I was once issued a cheque book many moons ago but I've genuinely never written one. I'm surprised so many are still using them, it just seems so archaic.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 12/12/2023 06:06

15 years ago when my son was at primary school. My AC have never had a cheque book, and one of their friends received a cheque paying his wages when he left a job and didn’t know what to do with it.

Londonnight · 12/12/2023 06:10

I can't remember the last time I wrote a cheque. My parents [ late 80's ] are the only ones I know who regularly write cheques.

Caspianberg · 12/12/2023 06:13

Never owned one, mid 30s

Dh and I also have small business. We have never accepted cheques, our nearest bank is ages away so it would be a right faff. We use Sum up if people want to pay directly by card, no high bank fees. Direct online people pay via Stripe or a direct bank transfer. No cheques needed

TerfTalking · 12/12/2023 06:14

I received a cheque this week and deposited from my bed using the Halifax App. That was better than going into town! Don’t have a cheque book anymore.

SmokeyToo · 12/12/2023 06:15

Buying a new car a year ago. Paid by bank cheque.

kiwiaddict · 12/12/2023 06:17

I'm 37 and I think, yeah I've never written a check.

Last timeI recieved one was maybe about twenty years ago?

RedheadRedBed · 12/12/2023 06:46

To pay for Charity raffle tickets.

LubaLuca · 12/12/2023 06:52

Years ago, maybe 8 years? I think I wrote a cheque for a school photo because that's what they asked for.

I prefer to receive a cheque over cash, but a bank transfer is even better.

TinkerTiger · 12/12/2023 07:05

I have never written cheque in my life 🙈 I'm approaching 40

sashh · 12/12/2023 07:12

I still have an old cheque book, it's for Alliance and Leicester, they became Santander in 2010.

Bippitybobbityboing · 12/12/2023 07:26

My parents gave me a cheque for my birthday, it was incredibly kind of them but three months later it's still in my drawer because I don't actually know what to do with it.
I do all my banking online, there are very few branches open and I can't get to them because I'm at work when they're open 🤷🏽‍♀️
I realise this is not insurmountable but it feels like a big extra hassle somehow.

(And yes I do realise I'm being a brat!)

ElinoristhenewEnid · 12/12/2023 08:03

Last week- bought some items off a private individual and sent a cheque in the post at their request.

foreverbasil · 12/12/2023 08:26

I last wrote a cheque around 2010. Someone asked me to pay a subscription by cheque about a month ago and they didn't believe that I don't have a cheque book. It's at least a decade since I owned one, I assume most people would be similar and was a little surprised by their response.
