When is the last time you gave money via cheque?

My daughter received a Christmas cheque today for £10 from my parents today and made me realise just how long it is since I have used a cheque. I think it must be over 5 years ago - what do you use cheques for and can anyone beat me at 5 years?

I've never written a check - im 33.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 11/12/2023 21:15

I'd have to go into the filing cabinet, in the office to check (lol) all I can say from memory is 'pre covid' but I can't think what for.

i love being able to deposit cheques via my phone!

About 8 years ago for a home repair. The guy had to show me how to do it!

DelurkingAJ · 11/12/2023 21:23

Last year - school photos. This year they’ve gone fully online. Receive them from DM who doesn’t do internet banking if we buy something on her behalf.

MintJulia · 11/12/2023 21:23

Nov 12th - hair cut
Dec 2nd - karate grading
Dec 9th - Christmas tree.

rural small businesses spend as little as possible on bank charges.

LBFseBrom · 11/12/2023 21:26

I gave someone a cheque, in a card, for their eighteenth last month and have sent a cheque to someone else in a Christmas card. However, I don't use cheques often now. There are some places that insist on them so it's handy to have a cheque book.

SnowsFalling · 11/12/2023 21:34

Last week.
Choices were: cash or cheque in person at 10am on a specific work day, or post a cheque and they would post the tickets out.

Can't remember the last time i recieved a cheque tho.

Cheeseplantalltheway · 11/12/2023 21:37

Last week

SharonEllis · 11/12/2023 21:40

I wrote a cheque earlier this year and have paid in at least 3 this year.

BoobyDazzler · 11/12/2023 21:42

I’m mid fourties and I’ve never written a cheque as a gift. I haven’t used one, or even had a cheque book for more than 20 years. Honestly, I didn’t know they were still a thing.

LinguisticallyCunning · 11/12/2023 21:45

My dad gave me a cheque a few months ago. He doesn't do online anything and can't get to a branch or even a cash machine to pay me back for some items I'd bought on his behalf.

edwinbear · 11/12/2023 21:47

Wrote one today as the admin fee for moving some shares from one broker to another.

Three last week, one to pay an elderly relatives care home fees. I have PoA on her bank accounts and the type of account it is charges for online transfers but cheques are free.

Also wrote 2 to give DC as Christmas presents which will go in an envelope under the tree. They can pay them into their bank accounts via their phones. I seem to be in the minority though!

Last year, will probably write some for Xmas presents. They are super easy to pay in via an app on most banks. Better than a bank transfer as you can put it in a card and better than cash as most people don’t like cash.

BasilParsley · 11/12/2023 21:50

Last Saturday, like I do every week when my lovely butcher delivers my weekly meat order late Saturday afternoon that I phoned through about three-four hours before. He tried bringing the hand-held electronic device a few times months ago but couldn't get a signal. So, no other way than cheque unless I go out and spend time finding a working cash dispenser...

DragonflyLady · 11/12/2023 22:01

I actually used a cheque this morning! I use one every month to pay my rent.

KohlaParasaurus · 11/12/2023 22:09

I haven't written one for a couple of years. I have a relative of advanced years who gives me a cheque every December for my adult children's Christmas presents. I pay it into my own account and send each child a bank transfer, so I have received a cheque very recently.

PastorCarrBonarra · 11/12/2023 22:11

December 2016 (Christmas present to a young child, my ex’s niece, who lived miles away, and we didn’t want to send cash in the post).

Aren’t they being phased out soon?

idontlikealdi · 11/12/2023 22:23

Get one every Christmas from great aunt. Have t had my own cheque book for at least 10 years.

Tonight1 · 11/12/2023 22:27

😯 God, years!

Namenumber3 · 11/12/2023 22:30

Ithink they should bring them back into fashion. DS takes a photo which his bank processes. Much easier than cash but more exciting to receive than a bank transfer.

mondaytosunday · 11/12/2023 22:31

My daughter received a refund cheque from DVLA a couple weeks ago. I had to write another cheque to them - no option to pay online (it was for a medical license). Before then probably a donation or something years ago (I really had to hunt down my chequebook which had an address three houses ago on it)!

bananaboats · 11/12/2023 21:00

Never owned a cheque book or written a cheque (I'm 35 if relevant!)

I did get issued a chequebook I think, but have never actually written one. I'm 38

boozeclues · 11/12/2023 22:40

Never….

In am 35 and never had the need, always paid cash, card or money transfer for large purchases

I had a business account I opened about 7 years ago, they gave me a cheque book it’s sitting between some books ok my desk. I imagine it will be a collectors item in a few years 😄

DrMadelineMaxwell · 11/12/2023 22:43

Last time I paid my childminder, so that's.....8 years ago.

boozeclues · 11/12/2023 22:43

Surely it costs them more to drive to the bank and physically cash a cheque???

You can use text messages to make payments for free these days!!!
