If you're over 50, what supplements do you take?

I'm on HRT and also take magnesium to help me sleep but I feel like I'm still lacking in energy levels. I exercise 4-5 times a week but sometimes it's an effort to motivate myself. I feel constantly tired. Thinking of taking B12 as well.

What do you take for energy levels?

Vit D without fail

SkyFullofStars1975 · 10/12/2023 20:22

Vitamin D and calcium. I'd had pain in my hip for years - within a month of starting the Vit D it had gone.

I eat lots of veg, including leafy green ones daily.

NannyGythaOgg · 10/12/2023 20:55

Lots of magnesium. Vitamin D, Vitamin K and biotin.
Omega 3 fish oil,
Vitamin C, iron, folate, B1, B12, and Vitamin A

And Milk Thistle (along with the red wine) for my liver

I'm mid 60s, and take Vitamin D

TellySavalashairbrush · 10/12/2023 21:21

Be mindful op of how much exercise you are doing 4/5 times per week is a lot, no wonder you feel tired.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 10/12/2023 21:25

Early 60s, take collagen , cod liver oil and vit d. Considering adding magnesium , reading this thread. I walk dogs every day and do strength training and Pilates , twice per week each.

Posts like this are self-selecting though. People who take loads of supplements are going to want to come on here and list them.

I used to take loads but have recently given up nearly everything as I thought they were a waste of money.

I do B and D, and C and zinc if I feel coldy. Today I started taking collagen as my hair is falling out/thin (I'm 51) and I've been told it really helps. If it doesn't I won't buy another pot.

Bobbinsy · 10/12/2023 21:31

Vitamin D3 and, every other month, cranberry capsules.

echt · 10/12/2023 21:33

The only supplements I take are those specifically advised by my doctor/rheumatologist: curcumin, vitamin D, folic acid.

RedRosie · 10/12/2023 21:34

I take a multivitamin all year round (mostly because I'm vegetarian) and take Vitamin D3 between October and March only. But I feel that a broadly good diet and some exercise are probably more important in reality.

TheTecknician · 10/12/2023 21:41

One vitamin D tablet daily. I started taking them this July when the lack of summer sunshine began to affect natural D production and my bones and muscles began to notice.

Gazelda · 10/12/2023 21:42

How do you know if your Vit D low? Or any other minerals/vits? Is there somewhere you can get an annual check?

Isthisblocked · 10/12/2023 21:49

Vit D3, omega 3,6 &9, glucosamine, biotin, turmeric and black pepper. Also aim for 30 fruits and vegetables per week and keep alcohol and caffeine low to aid good sleep. I’m not so good on exercise but do yoga. Get very tired but rest when I can

HardcoreLadyType · 10/12/2023 21:50

I’m not on HRT.

Last time I went to give blood, I was told my haemoglobin was too low, so I’ve been taking iron with vitamin C (when I remember).

I do feel tired all the time.

BotterMon · 10/12/2023 21:51

I'm in my 60's and don't take any. My mother is 90 and doesn't take anything either.

You can do it with places like thriva if you pay but my GP did mine

rookiemere · 10/12/2023 21:52

L-tyrosine- I read somewhere it was good for meno brain fog, it's actually too good so i take every other day, and magnesium for energy.
When I remember I make up a Beroca juice for multivitamins.

SiobahnRoy · 10/12/2023 21:53

Multi vitamins and minerals
magnesium at night

pro biotic

Crikeyalmighty · 10/12/2023 21:53

Daily Vit D spray, daily multi vit minus iron (I have quite high ferretin) , omega 3 fish oil and 3 times a week high dose folic acid (vit B9) as my levels were a bit low

FoxyLocksie · 10/12/2023 21:55

I take these daily:
Calcium citrate
Vitamin K2
Omega 3
Vitamin D3
Magnesium glycinate

I occasionally take Echinacea and vitamin C if I feel like I might have caught a cold.

Is it, though? I typically do 3 swims of a km each and a couple of spin classes. If you post in the exercise forum that's nothing.

D and C

Floofydawg · 13/12/2023 08:38

Berocca

Hbh17 · 13/12/2023 08:41

Nothing. Why would I? I feel fine, and I'm pretty cynical about supplements, which just seem like a way for the manufacturers to make money.
