Can you smell when DC are getting ill?

DS 2.5 has been particularly whingey and although he didn't feel hot I could tell by the smell of him that he had a temperature/was coming down with something.

I can always smell illness on him and I remember my mum saying the same about me when I was small.

DH can't smell it and it's very difficult to describe - he doesn't smell bad, just not like him.

Anyone else or am I mad?!

Yes, on their breath, it's not nice, like a bacteria smell.

I can smell when they are teething as well 😬it's a similar thing but slightly different.

I think we must produce more bacteria in our mouths when we're ill, I'm sure that's what causes mouth ulcers and I always get tonsil stones when I'm coming down with something.

Yes with dd2 it's like a milky smell. Not with anyone else tho.

I used to be able to smell mine, mostly around the ears, though they never had problems with their ears just general 'unwellness'

I can’t smell it but I believe it. I have seen it in a dog. I had a large stomach operation and we had two German Shepherds who lived outside, they were not pets, they were working dogs. I was worried coming home from hospital the dog would bound up to me and knock this painful stomach area. She did bound over. A foot away from me she stopped dead then very delicately sniffed, entirely accurately, all around the area of the wound… she then sat down and handed me a paw very gently. Her sense of smell and empathy….

Yep! Every time, with both DDs! Thought I was just strange because when I've mentioned it to anyone else they don't understand and look at me funny 😅

Generally no, although I could smell when DS had an ear infection once.

Yes, I used to smell that they were getting ill a couple of days beforehand.

I do have a very sensitive nose

Yes, my daughter always had a very strong smell of pear drops when she was ill.
