Can you smell when DC are getting ill?

DS 2.5 has been particularly whingey and although he didn't feel hot I could tell by the smell of him that he had a temperature/was coming down with something.

I can always smell illness on him and I remember my mum saying the same about me when I was small.

DH can't smell it and it's very difficult to describe - he doesn't smell bad, just not like him.

Anyone else or am I mad?!

Yes I always know trouble is on the way!

Ardith · 10/12/2023 16:33

Yes
their breath reminds me of scrambled eggs when they are ill

BCBird · 10/12/2023 16:34

Yes I've had this, to me the smell is like beef and onions!

Alloveragain3 · 10/12/2023 16:40

Yep, I can only do it with DS, no one else

Daffyyellow · 10/12/2023 16:44

Definitely - I can smell it on the small children I work with, but not my children who are older!

Nonplusultra · 10/12/2023 16:51

No, not by smell, but their skin feels odd to me (not just hot, it’s something else) and something about their eyes.

I read about a woman who could smell Parkinson’s. First her dh smelled weird, then when he was diagnosed and attended a group she noticed they all did) and dogs can smell certain illnesses too.

NorthernLiner · 10/12/2023 16:52

Yes. They smell metallic-ky, really weird but that’s the best way I can describe it.

DS2 gets a strange chemically smell when he's getting a chest infection. I always know to be ready. I lose a lot of hearing just before getting the more classic cold symptoms. If I find I'm struggling to tell what people are saying I know it's time to stock up on lemsip.

vernatheraven · 10/12/2023 17:02

Yes and I can smell it on my DH also

MatureChedda · 10/12/2023 17:03

Yes, I can smell it with close family.

EnjoyTheMushrooms · 10/12/2023 17:04

I can on my DD. And her gets a sort of puffy eye too.

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/12/2023 17:05

Yes definitely, though not as impressive as my aunt, who worked in nursing and could smell the particular infections. She did say it was pretty common though after some time on the job, to be able to detect certain bacterial infections immediately by the smell of urine/faeces etc.

susiedaisy1912 · 10/12/2023 17:06

On their breath I could, not on their skin or hair.

IfColoursHatedMe · 10/12/2023 17:06

I can't, but DH can smell if me or DS is about to be ill - it's a bit disconcerting when I hug him and he suddenly announces I'm going to have a cold soon.

eighbell · 10/12/2023 17:08

Yes, a smell and a pallor, something different about the eyes.

I can also smell when DH and my mum are ill. Other people - no.

shivbo2014 · 10/12/2023 17:08

I can smell a sweet smell on my soms breath when he is getting ill.

Recently my sense of smell has been super sensitive ... a random person in a queue had a horrible metallic smell. I couldn't think of a polite/non freaky way to suggest she visits a doctor. But I really do believe she wasn't well. I wondered if she knew. But i hope I was wrong, I'll never know

FatMumSlimDad · 10/12/2023 17:10

Yes. DH can too.

Onionsmadeofglass · 10/12/2023 16:18

Yes. Definitely. I can also smell if someone’s been drinking even 12 hours later when there’s probably no/little alcohol left in their blood.

Oh yes! Me too!!

solice84 · 10/12/2023 17:12

I think DS's breath smells like acetone when he's poorly

literalviolence · 10/12/2023 17:16

I definitely could when they were little. Not so easy nowadays.

savemyears · 10/12/2023 17:21

My DS smells of pear drops when he's properly ill, not with a cold but usually ear/throat/chest infection. It's really strong. I can smell it as soon as I go into his room.

I've never noticed it on my DD but she's never had more than a cold somehow!

Toottooot · 10/12/2023 17:27

Aye - breath smells funny.

RollingDownTheRiver · 10/12/2023 17:27

Yes I could smell when they were ill. It meant they couldn't pretend to be ill to get out of something because I could tell if it was genuine.
