Does anyone send Christmas cards still?

Every year I resolve to stop then someone sends me one and I worry about offending them if I don’t reciprocate. It’s a faff and expensive to buy a stamp when I’m in touch with anyone I might want to wish a Happy Christmas to on social media. But every year I crumble just prolonging the process … do you send Xmas cards? Even a few? Or is it an old tradition that genuinely is dying out? Not sure how to play it this year …

I do, but just because I enjoy it and think it’s nice

AnImaginaryCat · 09/12/2023 06:55

No. Haven't for about a decade. I recieve fewer and fewer each year too.

TerfTalking · 09/12/2023 06:55

I have done a few, but big cull this year. I still send to distant friends with a “round robin” but told my friends I see regularly I’m not sending them as stamps are extortion but I’ll buy the first round at next catch up. All were on board!

I used to send regularly and last year I sent none because I was too I’ll to bother. I think I’ll send no more than 8 this year

Tara336 · 09/12/2023 06:59

I am now down to just very close friends and relatives, I really can't stand sitting and writing endless cards and the hassle of putting the ones I receive up, I did used to quite like it but now it's a chore I don't enjoy. I make a donation to charity instead

Splety · 09/12/2023 07:00

I used to send about 80, now send about 40. I try to hand them to people I see from 1 Dec or drive and post through letterboxes to avoid paying the extortionate postage, plus I’ve culled a few. And a few have died.

Trumpton · 09/12/2023 07:00

I make most of mine that I send but have cut down from 60 to 20 this year. I have a few put aside so that if I receive one from someone I haven’t sent to I can pop one in post.

GoingRoundInOvals · 09/12/2023 07:00

I do, I love the tradition of sitting down with my address book and handwriting the messages, even to friends I see once a week.

I do get sad that I seem to be one of a dying few, my friends don't really seem to do them for various reasons, and I think the odd one or two who send them back to me only do so out of guilt (which I don't want them to feel!)

but I'd secretly love it if k woke to the postman rattling the letterbox and a dozen cards fell through

PermanentTemporary · 09/12/2023 07:00

I've surprised myself with how many I'm still sending, probably about 25 this year but 10 of those are to local friends so no stamps needed. I still have older relatives who it feels right to send to, but I've thinned it out a lot.

Two groups of friends I've just sent a pic of our Christmas wreath to the WhatsApp chat though. And some im just not sending.

PermanentTemporary · 09/12/2023 07:02

I do like getting them but it is much, much better if people write even a few words in the card. I've just got one from a school friend who i never see. She's written 'from Jane and Walter' (eg) and that's it. I have no idea whats happening in her life. But its a kind thought.

legosnowqueen · 09/12/2023 07:05

I still love sending & receiving them. Particularly with people that I don't see often.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 09/12/2023 07:08

I’ve only sent 3 this year, down from about 20. I refuse to pay the postage anymore and I hate writing them.

heartsinvisiblefury · 09/12/2023 07:11

Never. I think in this day and age that paying money to send a piece of cardboard through the post is just ridiculous.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 09/12/2023 07:14

I love sending and receiving them, and I like displaying them. I get about 40 cards every Christmas, so my friends are obviously still sending them!

salamirose · 09/12/2023 07:16

I'm cutting down due to postage costing more than the card! But yes I have 5 ready to go. If I'm honest that is mostly to older generations who I know place value on them and like to hang them up to make the place look Christmassy.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/12/2023 07:18

Yes, usually around 20-30 each year. I like having a display of cards (when people do send me one), it's part of Christmas decorations.

I miss getting birthday cards more though 😕

HumerousHumous · 09/12/2023 07:18

This year I have created a digital christmas card and will be sending by email and WhatsApp. About 8 actual cards are going by post to relatives that are not on social media or online in any way. About 10 are being hand delivered. Normally I post about 40 but with postage so high I cant justify posting and hopefully it might send a message to Royal Mail. Or not!

User2856948 · 09/12/2023 07:29

I send 3 in the post and put one in with the presents that I give to people in person

garlictwist · 09/12/2023 07:30

No, I think they're a bit pointless. I get the odd one but it just goes in the recycling Xmas Blush

TeenDivided · 09/12/2023 07:30

We send about 50, of which 40 are via the post.
I get a lot of joy from receiving cards and they are part of our Christmas decorations.
I value the time and effort that has gone into them.
You can't display electronic cards.

User2856948 · 09/12/2023 07:32

Yes, electronic cards are even more pointless than cardboard cards.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 09/12/2023 07:33

Yes
I love sending them and receiving them. I love having them strung up on red ribbons and having that little contact from people we don't see often.

Allschoolsareartschools · 09/12/2023 07:36

I'm sending about 20 in total but I'm only posting 3 or 4, the rest are hand delivered or go in with presents.
Postage is so expensive plus I've just read Royal Mail are prioritising parcels over cards so they might not even get there before Christmas!
I wouldn't mind if I didn't receive any tbh.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 09/12/2023 07:37

I do! Mostly to older relatives and close friends, probably about 15 cards in total. I do it because I like doing it. I don't expect to get cards back but most people I send them to send cards to me as well.
I love buying Christmas cards and I have quite a stash, probably more than I'll ever send! I tend to buy nice individual cards rather than packs as I don't send that many.

OllieCollieWoo · 09/12/2023 07:39

I send them. I love it and I don't know why.. love purchasing cards, the Saturday night writing them. And I love putting up Christmas cards.
