Short trip but where to go with a ten year old after the Palladium? Skating is all booked up. I though Carnaby street but his quite an active lad although it says it’s going to rain. Any ideas without going all over London? Food as well he eats anything

Just be warned that London was awful last weekend - heaving. Several underground stations were closed due to over crowding.

CroccyWoccy · 08/12/2023 22:02

What time does the Panto finish?

Mydogisscratching · 08/12/2023 22:03

December in London is the best time of year but also the worst. If you haven't booked anything by now I'd plan to head home. I walked up carnaby street two weeks ago on a Saturday and it was hideous.

Hamleys isn’t too far away?

Hobbes8 · 08/12/2023 22:09

Winter wonderland in Hyde Park - it’s basically a big version of a travelling fairground and the rides are expensive, but it looks pretty cool and you can get a bratwurst and go on a couple of rides.

Carnaby street lights will be good, and Libertys window display. We used to walk down Oxford st and look at all the department store windows on the way to Hyde Park.

EachandEveryone · 08/12/2023 22:12

They are coming down to me I can go in whenever I like. I don’t think he will want to sit down again. Winter Wonderland might be a good shout depends on the weather.

We are going to see Frozen for Granddaughter birthday. Have absolutely no plans apart from grabbing a fast food meal . Looking at Christmas lights and heading home .

Piccadilly / Regents Street / Oxford Street is absolutely hellish at the moment. We were around there last Saturday and it was just awful. So many people.

EachandEveryone · 08/12/2023 22:35

WW is booked up. I might try and get skating tickets tomorrow as they said they put more out on the day.

Op I just thought of this. Tucked away but five minutes from the palladium.

Skating. They have lots of times for tomorrow.

'Please arrive 20 minutes in advance of your time slot to get your skates on! Skating sessions last 35 minutes.'

EachandEveryone · 08/12/2023 23:24

Thanks for that it looks like a hidden secret so hopefully we will be out of the way

If the secret skating visit isn't possible, what about going to see the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Sq? They have tried to improve the lights on The Strand so it's more fun to walk down.

Twist Museum in Oxford St not far from theatre. Optical Illusions - very clever and they explain the science behind them. and you will be indoors.

Hamleys isn’t too far away?

There were queues 20 deep to get into Hamleys at 5pm last Saturday

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 09/12/2023 08:43

Dc queued for over an hour on Monday for WW. London is hellish at the moment. The lights are pretty though.

Mydogisscratching · 09/12/2023 08:58

I would really just book the skating now and go there. It's just off the main drag but Hanover square always seems so comparatively quiet! The weather is horrid right now - maybe it'll be quieter in town too

@Cookerhood really??do you know where tubes were closed

Entrances to Oxford street tube were closed when I was there a few weeks ago. But they'll be open then closed then open again. Just to stem the flow for a bit

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 09/12/2023 09:06

@Mydogisscratching tx i couldn't bear that. Maybe week days better?

If you're going for something specific - like in a particular present in a shop - I'd do it online or go on a weekday morning. If you're going for fun I'd wait until January.

Piccadilly Circus was, and I think others later.

Yes, Hanover Square wasn't too bad & the Elizabeth line station (entrance is in Hanover Square) was fine.

SalmonWellington · 09/12/2023 09:34

The skating is a good shout. Marylebone and Mayfair will be lesw busy than more touristy bits and very pretty.
