Short trip but where to go with a ten year old after the Palladium? Skating is all booked up. I though Carnaby street but his quite an active lad although it says it’s going to rain. Any ideas without going all over London? Food as well he eats anything

I’d walk over to southbank. Down to Westminster bridge then along the river. Lots of sites to see.

Are there marches today though?

I was going to ask what the South Bank is like at the moment? It's one of my favourite places to go in London, such a different, cool vibe.

Normally at another time of year I'd take a ten year old to the Outernet at Tottenham Court Road to see the immersive video building thing, and then drop into Forbidden Planet and the Lego store. But it will be insanely busy and the queues for Lego store will be round the block. If you're at the Palladium it is worth walking two minutes to Carnaby Street though because their lights are usually good. And I agree that Hanover Square is a bit of an oasis.

If timing permits I'd just jump on a tube to the City to catch the last slot of the day for Tower Bridge: it's reasonable priced, not overcrowded or full of west end shoppers, will get him some exercise in the dry and the views of the city light from the high walkway should be amazing. https://www.towerbridge.org.uk/about-us

It's got some nice light exhibits round by the RFH, and the food market round the back is always reliable. There's also a Christmas Market by the river which is a bit crowded and generic.

Winter wonderland in Hyde Park - it’s basically a big version of a travelling fairground and the rides are expensive, but it looks pretty cool and you can get a bratwurst and go on a couple of rides.

Carnaby street lights will be good, and Libertys window display. We used to walk down Oxford st and look at all the department store windows on the way to Hyde Park.

I’m heard people in London recently saying you had to pay to go into Winter Wonderland.

Having been to West End recently it’s absolute hell around Fortnum and masons, Oxford Circus and regent street. So I’d avoid if possible.

If not raining I'd walk down Southbank enjoy that....
head across the pedestrian bridge to Charing cross and go over to covent garden.
The market and shops are decorated beautifully.
Then you can go somewhere fun to eat around there (sticks and sushi, or pop to china town, inamo, flat iron, there's huge choice)

Then up to Tottenham court tube has a cool interactive thing called the butterfly trail

There are also great dessert places nearby (haufre, fuwa fuwa etc )

What did you end up doing op?

EachandEveryone · 11/12/2023 12:23

The crowds were horrendous. Never on a weekend again. We did the ice skating off Oxford street and came home and got a Chinese. Yesterday we just went around Hampstead spent a lot of time in Waterstones and the indoor vintage market. Had Sunday lunch which was half burnt and we weren’t the only ones to complain. Never even got offered a free drink!
