Something really odd happened this morning

I did the bins last night as they're collected 7am today, woke up very early so decided to watch a movie on the sofa and there was a thud just after 5am so I tensed as someone on the run gave this address so we've had the police around a few times.

But the weird thing is that our rubbish has disappeared. I've double checked, it's definitely gone and everyone else's is still out.

It's rented so perhaps landlord picked it up? There was no need though, removal truck will be around shortly

Strange how so many of you don't have bins? Do you have recycling ones?

We have a black blue and brown and you can buy green.

busnumbernine · 08/12/2023 09:38

We have recycling bags (clear) and general rubbish bags (black). Both are collected weekly.

You can also buy a mini bulk bag thing for garden waste (I compost so don't know how often they are collected. We have a black plastic crate thing for glass which is collected monthly.

Tonight1 · 08/12/2023 09:44

It's alternate weeks so it was rubbish today, then recycling next week, and we use black bags for waste, clear bags for recycling. The houses on my side of the street open directly onto the pavement so we do it this way. Opposite side of the street have front gardens so they use wheelie bins.

I feel really silly now for starting this thread but I've been alarmed recently with the police and got worried at an unexpected bang around 5am.

Our bin-men come round on foot and gather the bin bags into piles along the street, e.g. making 15 biggish piles rather than 45 smaller ones.

The bin lorry follows later (anything from 30 mins to 3 hrs) and the biggish piles get chucked on the lorry then.

You probably heard the initial gathering and saw the biggish piles, your rubbish had been moved into one of those.

Mine does this too.

It must make a lot of sense for them to do it this way, else they just wouldn’t do it.

I know they start very early and the quicker they finish, the sooner they can go home.

Perhaps the actual truck doesn’t come out until much later, so as soon as they start work they do as much as they can, so when it’s time for the truck to come they can just throw it in and be done.

A bit off topic but related to a question above, I know of a person who is banned from a whole city centre because he harasses the public for money in a very threatening way. Begging with menaces basically.

Nowherenew · 08/12/2023 09:49

Don’t feel silly OP as we’d all find it odd that our bin bags had disappeared, it’s not something anyone would ever steal so I’d have been very confused too.

We have no bins.

We have reusable bags for recycling.

We can pay for another bag for garden waste if we want to.

Which would make sense if they had actually done that but they only moved yours which seems pointless.

Although as I said I'm surprised they start at 5am unless you're in the city center as I thought it was half 6 at the earliest in residential areas.

Ours come round at 5am in a small town

They also go round collecting bags and food only bins etc first before they do the main bins

I honestly thought everywhere had wheelie bins these days

You only have bins if you have a front garden or driveway to put them in. If not, if you live in a terraced house like we do, you'll likely get weighted coloured bags to use (supposedly so they don't blow away...lol) or a crate you can keep in the back garden, or a roll of coloured bags to use. Or a food bin with a carry handle. Or all of the above, like we do 😁

DaftyInTheMiddle · 08/12/2023 09:58

when I heard the rubbish truck just now I went out to ask them and they said they did take our bags first

So they came 2 hours earlier, just to collect your bag, then returned to do the rest? Hmm

We get awful flimsy disposable bags (for recycling). It makes me irritated every time I use one.

TheseLegsDefinitelyUsedToBeLonger · 08/12/2023 10:02

@DaftyInTheMiddle yeah they're not ideal are they?

I probably should have asked them why 5am and only ours as I ran out at 7am approx when I heard rubbish truck and they said they'd taken our rubbish bags. It was 6am approx that I went to the shop and noticed it was only ours.

Previous poster said they probably just moved ours before pick up time and started piling up.

Waste varies between area but here we have to take glass to glass recycling bank and just leave out bags for waste or recycling, depending on which week it is.

I'm OK thanks, just really stressed out about several things and drinking too much (which is my own fault).

I have good support from my gp surgery.

Glad you've got support. Mention the drinking to your GP if they're not already aware.
It's a difficult time of year anyway for stress and anxiety, never-mind if you have other factors too. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Tonight1 · 08/12/2023 10:34

@kittensinthekitchen that's sweet of you, thank you

If someone on the run (!!!) is using your address I'd be worried they'd stolen your rubbish in the hope of finding a letter or something with more info for identity theft.

This is why I remove my name and address from all envelopes and letters before recycling! 😳

Louise303 · 10/12/2023 01:04

There was a post on our local next-door app a few months back and a picture of a man taking things from bins. He had a leaflet in his hand and was pretending he was delivering them. It turned out he was trying to get personal info for fraudulent purposes.

Tonight1 · 10/12/2023 06:18

I'm sorry I overreacted a bit 😆

It was that with the crim giving out our address, police turning up several times and me not realising they gather up bags really early before the truck comes round 7am I am quite sensitive to bangs just outside the house.

Hope he didn't hurt his girlfriend too badly. Well...jail now for him. Last time police were round I said I promised I would dial 999 instantly if he did turn up here.

Houses that are straight onto the pavement don’t have anywhere to store bins. It you live in a city, lots of roads full of terraced houses just put bags out.
