I think my phone call was recorded

I have just been having a chat on my phone to my brother, during which we discussed various topics including our shared childhood, topics in the media, current political issues and our concerns about some local news events.

After hanging up and opening up WhatsApp to message a different family member about a couple of trivial things, I heard my brother's voice speaking about something we had discussed much earlier in the phone call. It was really odd.

I immediately phoned my brother and told him what had happened and he said he'd had something similar happen to him at the same time.

This was a snippet of the conversation from some time back, not an echo. There was a time delay of nearly an hour because we had switched topics.

I'm wondering who recorded the call and what was the purpose of letting us both know it had been recorded.

I'm into rational and fact-based explanations of things and definitely not a tin foil hat wearing type.

This is unsettling

How weird, have you asked the wattsapp person. We're you calling your brother on wattsapp, is there some sort of group chat set up. Is the record conversations turned on. Has anyone had access to both you and your brothers phones,

Redebs · 06/12/2023 11:32

I wasn't calling him on WhatsApp.
It was just the ordinary (mobile) phone and we'd ended the call.

Really spooky, especially since we both experienced it.

Our conversation did cover some political issues and current news, but we are both responsible, law-abiding people.

Presumably someone has access to our calls then?
The part I heard wasn't from the end of our call. It was like someone wanted us to know it had been recorded.

I made a joke about 'at least we educated whoever was listening', but it's scary actually

That is spooky, I would call the wattsapp person and tell them you could hear your conversation in the background, ask if they know anything about it.

OVienna · 06/12/2023 11:37

I think you must have switched on a recording function inadvertently.

Redebs · 06/12/2023 11:39

I was just sending a written message. Nothing to do with whatsapp. I could hear the voice faintly because it wasn't on speaker, after hanging up

Both of us, hearing a snippet of each others voice around five minutes after ending the call?

I will check sound files on my phone, but not sure how it would have happened to him at the same time?

You can Google how to check if your phone is hacked and how to resolve it and search for spyware

Redebs · 06/12/2023 11:44

No recordings on my phone

Spinet · 06/12/2023 11:45

It's not tin-hat stuff to imagine that certain words would trigger someone to record your call, it's just realistic. However I hope it's not that or whoever is doing it is really really shit at covert surveillance!

Redebs · 06/12/2023 11:46

Or they wanted to scare us

What would scaring you achieve?

TwiddlingMyToes · 06/12/2023 11:52

So you think it's the person you were texting that would have recorded it? Who was that person?

If your call was recorded and sent to you, you would have a record of the file transfer. Did you see the call recording in a message from someone? What did it play in? In WhatsApp? In another media player? You would have needed to download and open the file for someone to have sent you a recording they made. Recordings just don't appear from nowhere (under normal circumstances) on a device with no record of who sent them.

Redebs · 06/12/2023 12:08

Just spoke to brother and he thinks it might have been a glitch with his Alexa

Nothing in my files. It seemed to come from the phone app itself

Or they wanted to scare us

Who wanted to scare you? The family member? Do they have form for that? Have you asked them about it?

And did your brother hear the recording from the same family member?

StillCreatingAName · 06/12/2023 12:26

This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. If you were just messaging your brother, one of you had obviously hit the voice record icon. Nothing complicated or sinister about it.

By the way, if you use WhatsApp or Instagram or Facebook apps, it’s all linked and everything is being ‘monitored’ of sorts, whether like it or not, how do you think you’re served sponsored content?

mamma65432 · 06/12/2023 12:29

Which app played the recording?

JamieKnows · 06/12/2023 12:30

His Alexa sent you a recording of your voice and your phone randomly started playing it whilst you were whatsapping an unrelated mate? And it also happened to your brother at the same time who is in a different house?

Redebs · 06/12/2023 12:40

I think the sounds probably came from the call that had not been cut off properly.
The WhatsApp thing isn't relevant; it just explains why I had my phone still in my hand.

Presumably the call was still active and I heard brother's Alexa in the background replaying part of the conversation it had accidentally recorded. He heard my voice too.

Neither of us is important or dangerous, but in these times I'm aware that surveillance by police and security agencies is happening in pretty much every region. We were both 'putting the world to rights' so I'm sure plenty of trigger words were expressed. Decades ago we were into CND and a friend of ours discovered he had been recorded by police tapping his phone. I think that kind of thing sticks in your mind.

Glad there is an innocent explanation in this case though.

Bloody Alexa!

OP posts:
OhComeOnFFS · 06/12/2023 13:04

I wouldn't have Alexa switched on if I was talking about anything like that.

Redebs · 06/12/2023 13:06

Me neither
