What to drink when driving that night?

Hi

I've a few work nights out coming up. I've decided to drive as it's the only way I won't drink alcohol and I need to detox (frankly) and cut down (a lot).

But I struggle with the sweetness of non alcoholic drinks. And there's only so much sparking or plain water I can cope with - I don't enjoy either really.

Can you inspire me with good options? I don't live in the sort of place where I can say to a barman "make something non alcoholic and lovely please".

Heineken 0%?

Eatbetterthisweek · 03/12/2023 16:15

Most places have non alcoholic beers now. 0% Guinness is good. 0% corona is nice too.

RJnomore1 · 03/12/2023 16:17

Soda water and lime any good?

what do you normally drink if you’re having alcohol?

soda and lime is my go to

RJnomore1 · 03/12/2023 16:18

Tonic water on its own it’s pretty ok too

notacooldad · 03/12/2023 16:18

mocktails?

sugarandsweetener · 03/12/2023 16:19

and if they put a lime in it… looks like a g&t to those childish enough to try to goad you i. to drinking

BigFatLiar · 03/12/2023 16:21

OH can't drink is permanently the designated driver. He sometimes has 0 alcohol beer (which he thinks not bad now) 0 alcohol G&T or diet Pepsi, though he actually prefers a cup of tea and after getting over an initial embarrassment about it will now quite happily ask for a pot of tea.

Oldraver · 03/12/2023 16:34

Heineken o% is my go to now as there is no sweetness like a lot of soft drinks

doitwithlove · 03/12/2023 16:53

I drink lime & soda, I refuse to pay the ridiculous prices charged for 0% alcoholic drinks.

Floralnomad · 03/12/2023 16:55

I am a non drinker and I always have soda and lime or tonic water when out .

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/12/2023 16:55

Guinness and Erdinger alcohol free varieties are great. Beck's Blue gives me a worse "hangover" than actual beer!

Kombucha is my soft drink of choice it it's available.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 03/12/2023 16:57

Tonic water with a dash of Angostura bitters

erinaceus · 03/12/2023 16:57

0% alcohol (or 0.5% alcohol) beer is my go-to. It maintains the aesthetic on the table in a pub, tastes good and doesn’t get so many boring “why aren’t you drinking” conversations.

Have a great night!

CalistoNoSolo · 03/12/2023 16:59

Zero gin and tonic. It's amazingly good, it really is like drinking a proper g&t, plus it feels festive because it should come with juniper berries/cucumber/Bay leaves/other fancy shmancy gubbins. I can't drink sweet drinks, despite having a debilitating chocolate addiction, so this is perfect when I'm driving and I'm fed up with fizzy water.

ArcticBells · 03/12/2023 17:01

@CalistoNoSolo Does it actually taste authentic?

DecemberSleet · 03/12/2023 17:24

I'm a red wine drinker usually. I like them heavy on the tannins. So lime and soda or lime and tonic just feel too fizzy to have more than half a glass or so.

Mocktails ain't a thing where I live. The bars would give you a lemonade and orange juice...

cranberry juice then
there is no silver bullet op
Just drink a non alcoholic drink that you like!

Babymamamama · 03/12/2023 17:28

I like tonic with ice and lemon or soda water with lime fresh or cordial. Not too sweet. Or occasionally virgin Bloody Mary. Yum.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 03/12/2023 17:30

When I was pregnant I drank ginger ale mixed with tonic water and a slice of lime. It was lovely.

Or we have a subscription to Lucky Saint 0% which is fab.

Taciturn · 03/12/2023 17:30

Tomato juice

doubleshotcappuccino · 03/12/2023 17:36

@CalistoNoSolo another fan of zero gin.. love it and I'm not sure I could spot much difference to what I used to drink . Like to add some rosemary and orange and put it in a nice glass too ..
No one is the wiser and I love it ! DH now on it too ..

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 03/12/2023 17:38

0 alcohol gin and slimline tonic

I think a cup of tea then!

AF beer (not all fizzy, the Guinness 0.0 is lovely and tastes exactly like the real thing). Or have a tonic and stick with one. Or I often have a tea/coffee/hot chocolate. If you haven’t ordered AF drinks recently, you may be surprised. Lots of places do have AF wines now. And a wider variety of non sweet things.
