What to drink when driving that night?

Hi

I've a few work nights out coming up. I've decided to drive as it's the only way I won't drink alcohol and I need to detox (frankly) and cut down (a lot).

But I struggle with the sweetness of non alcoholic drinks. And there's only so much sparking or plain water I can cope with - I don't enjoy either really.

Can you inspire me with good options? I don't live in the sort of place where I can say to a barman "make something non alcoholic and lovely please".

Most AF beers are pretty good! Or cranberry juice or ginger beer 🍻

LadyOfTheCanyon · 03/12/2023 17:52

Ginger beer with a huge glug of lime juice in it which takes away the sweetness a bit and balances the sugar. Lots of ice.

@CalistoNoSolo Does it actually taste authentic?

Yes it really does. I was massively sceptical but I'm a convert. It's so good it does actually seem like you're drinking alcohol but without the getting pissed bit.

soda and lime is my go to

Mine too. And cheap as chips!!

OldTinHat · 03/12/2023 18:20

I've just switched to blackcurrant and soda. It's not very fizzy and quite dry.

Or there some are good AF ciders, I always ask what they have. Also recommend Becks Blue.

Grapefruit juice and soda
Lime and soda or tonic water with ice and lemon.
I rarely drink so these are my go-to’s.

BeyondMyWits · 03/12/2023 18:38

Cranberry juice with plain tonic water is lovely and almost "savoury". DH will often have Appletise with Canada dry ginger ale... fruity and spicy, good at Xmas.

Toottooot · 03/12/2023 18:40

Irn Bru for me.

Helenahandkart · 03/12/2023 18:43

I start off with a ginger beer and then ask for cups of tea.

This sounds like the way to go...

Honestly can you get tea and coffee in your local bars?!? You definitely cannot here... I'd love a coffee after a soft drink.

I would also remember you don't need to have the same number of drinks as everyone else - I've made that mistake before of getting a drink at every round. If you wouldn't normally drink 6 pints of lemonade a night, you'll find yourself hyped up on sugar and desperate for the loo on your drive home...

DecemberSleet · 03/12/2023 21:39

Yes! @PianPianPiano That's exactly my issue - I end up trying to keep the pace but then feel overwhelmed by the volume.

I'm another one who isn't keen on the sweetness of soft drinks, so I usually go for non alcoholic beer if it's available, or non alcoholic cider. If I can't get that then I choose bitter lemon and soda as the least sweet option.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 04/12/2023 15:15

I went to a Christmas party this weekend & I was the driver. I had tonic with a dash of bitters & later on a coffee. I find if I'm not drinking alcohol I don't actually have that many drinks.
