Red trousers. When did these become fashionable for elderly gentlemen?

I don't mean bright red crimplene flares that my Mum sported back in 1975. I mean the off-maroon corduroy and chino strides that have become alarmingly de rigeur over the last few months. They have now supplanted the beige (or pale blue) zippered jacket as the must-have fashion attire for the over-80s.

My old man pegged it three and a half years ago at the age of 88. He wouldn't have been seen dead in any shade of red or beige!

Never seen such things on anyone

ParanoidJo · 01/12/2023 21:45

Michael Portillo. It all started there.

Leafysuburb · 01/12/2023 21:45

And boat shoes. Standard Tory councillor wear.

Sloaney types have long favoured a dark red trouser, sometimes fading to dusty pink.

momtoboys · 01/12/2023 21:47

Popular in the US too but mostly in spring and summer. Nantucket red I think its called.

PersonWithInternalGonads · 01/12/2023 21:47

It started with salmon pink.

Whoopi doo. So you're the fashion police.

LongStoryLong · 01/12/2023 21:48

Dancingonaslice · 01/12/2023 21:49

Oh it’s a thing for very posh folk.
Has been for a number of years.

FRTs, well known lower attire of the older posh man for decades now.

FourteenTog · 01/12/2023 21:50

Maybe in the 1990s or earlier for young fogeys. So if a middle aged man in the 1990s was trying to dress like a young fogey, he would have normalised these items in his wardrobe and now be in his 70s/80s.

theduchessofspork · 01/12/2023 21:51

In the shire I come from men have been sporting salmon pink and a variety of jewelled toned chinos and cords since as long as I can remember (the 80s).

they are poshish types

I will ask , even though there is no chance of you responding, but what is your proof of this?

She comes from the same shire as me

TheDogsMother · 01/12/2023 21:53

It's a country thing for (mostly older) men. They will be either mustard or terracotta coloured trousers, usually accompanied by a very red face.

DewinDwl · 01/12/2023 21:54

It's Portillo's fault. Someone will post a photo soon <runs away>

TheTecknician · 01/12/2023 21:54

I am not the fashion police.

It seems this look has been around for longer than I realised. I learn something every day.

Is Greenwood's still with us ?

I dressed DS in red trousers once when he was little, his DGF said 'only posh men wear those', I had no idea 😂

Then you obviously don't hang out at a farmers market on Saturday morning when the male of the landed gentry species are out doing performative shopping !

Mustard , maroon and dark green cords for winter .. long chino shorts of similar hue for summer ..

Been around since I was a kid and I'm 60.

Yep, Portillo.

Janinejones · 01/12/2023 22:02

"Cotton Traders" might have chinos and moleskins in a very dark maroon.
Mail order pages of weekend papers. Some of these are a comfortable fit, and good quality. Quite thick material. Ideal for winter.
Father has some. FIL goes for cords in that old yellowish colour, but he is more country almost County. My Dad is urban.

Toesaresoweird · 01/12/2023 22:05

Every day is a school day! I didn't know that this was a thing.
I used to train with a person who always wore red tracksuit bottoms. The only man I've ever seen wear red trousers. I suppose the working class version.
My friend would ask who turned up and I'd say "oh just Dave and his red trousers" it became a bit of a running joke.
I searched Michael Portillo on Google and he has red trousers on in the first picture shown.
