Red trousers. When did these become fashionable for elderly gentlemen?

I don't mean bright red crimplene flares that my Mum sported back in 1975. I mean the off-maroon corduroy and chino strides that have become alarmingly de rigeur over the last few months. They have now supplanted the beige (or pale blue) zippered jacket as the must-have fashion attire for the over-80s.

My old man pegged it three and a half years ago at the age of 88. He wouldn't have been seen dead in any shade of red or beige!

In the 80s I think. Certainly by the 90s. It’s an upper middle class middle aged or older type thing ime.

there used to be a website or maybe a fb group where you could send in photos of middle aged blokes in red trousers spotted in the wild.

I once worked with a very heeled man. We were involved in some tense meetings, quite important for something nationally. At a meeting he turned up with aforementioned dusky pink trousers, normally he was suited. He got a hard time at the meeting. At the end, after the other people left, he said, the bloody rotters - they knew I was on leave and had come in specially for this meeting. I said, how did they know you had come in whilst being on leave. He looked at me incredulously and said, my trousers of course!

Popular amongst the yachting fraternity, obviously teamed with deck shoes.

A dear friend of mine who was fritefly posh and also a massive character died about 10 years ago, and stipulated that his coffin bearers all wear red trousers (they were all faded red, so basically pink).

DH has a pair of red trousers (and dark green trousers and dark purple trousers too). I think they are nice. Not posh. I'm pretty sure they are from from M&S as it seems to be the only shop he goes to!

I have 2 confess DH has the full set (winter cords and summer chino shorts in regulation mustard , green and faded reddish pink.

Boat shoes with the shorts and a Ralph loren t shirt . Good cashmere sweater and brown ankle boots or brogues..

All topped by a nattered to death Barbour circa 1982.. (I've tried to hide it but he can sniff it out)

Mustard corduroy is one heck of a turn-off.
