Which songs make you cry?

I just listened to Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine, and I remember they played it in Coronation Street when Aidan Connor took his own life. I know it's just a soap but it was heartbreaking and a 23 year old girl from my local area took her own life earlier this year, it just made me think of her.
There are other songs which have the same effect, interested to hear about any other songs that have this effect on people!

The Rose - Bette Midler , gets me every time!

Me too. And I’m not a crier.
Not helped by the fact the crematorium ambushed me with it at my mum’s funeral. It was on their tape of music that they played as the curtains closed. I wasn’t prepared for it.

The cheers theme used to make me cry as a teen. I think I was full of angst.
Unwritten by Natasha beddingfield
After all these years by foster and Allen
Air that you breath by the Hollies.

Your eyes are diabolical blue, ooh
I've been watching you walk on the water lately
My arms outstretched when you do
What am I?
What am I on the earth for
If not to put you to bed?
If not to remind you to eat sometimes, if...
If not to cradle your head?
What am I without you?

I've listened to Rainy night in Soho by the Pogues tonight & cried, the words reminded me so much of my relationship with late dp.

Theblindkraken · 30/11/2023 22:40

We are young- supergrass. Took on a very dark meaning. For me, my friends and the emergency services in a village in Hertfordshire one night.
on a happier note, the song ‘stand by me’ which was already my partner and my special song for years, which then spontaneously came on the radio as we found ourselves in a surgical recovery room holding our alive and healthy child after the most horrendous and dramatic birth.

it’ll play at our wedding if we ever make it.

Horrace · 30/11/2023 22:42

He is a wonderful semi professional musician and it was so moving

But our holy dreams of yesterday aren't gone They still haunt us like the ghosts of Babylon And the breakin' of the day might bring you sorrow You know I may not be around this time tomorrow But I'll always be with you I'll always be with you

I had a strange reaction in Morrison's tonight to The Isley Brothers 'This Old Heart of Mine'. Just nipped in to get some bread and other bits on the way home and they were playing it when I got to the self-checkout.

I had an older boyfriend when I was in my early 20s who was still in love with his ex-wife and who loved the song- clearly thought it was about him and her. He treated me really badly but I was completely in love with him (mad I know but I was quite naive) . I haven't thought about him for about 20years. He must be in his early 60s now.

Anyway, it was playing in the background and I suddenly became really aware of it and of all the emotions again, associated with a particularly awful Christmas. I was scanning stuff through and tears were rolling down my face. It was bizarre. I have no feelings about him now, I never think about him. He was a weak, cheating, lying shit in truth but I was really emotional and couldn't hold the waves of sadness back.

I could see the bloke standing after me at the till looking quite uncomfortable. He asked if I was ok and I nodded. By the time I walked out to the car I was fine. Just bizarre. I told DH when I got home, who just gave me a big bear hug. 🙂

Dance with my father. Well gee thanks, what proportion of the adult population has lost their father? Quite a lot. Make them all cry why don’t you.

Bagpipe music makes me cry. My Scottish grandma (living in England) loved it so much.

In slightly related matters Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire makes me feel physically sick as DH was playing that album in the car during the worst of my morning sickness. I can suddenly feel nauseous and not know why until I realise what is on the radio. Music is powerfully linked to memories.,

Ronan-Taylor Swift

I very rarely cry at music but I cannot listen to it without sobbing at the words.

Definitely Ronan... there are quite a few other songs that can make me tearful, but knowing this song was written about that beautiful boy who died.. the lyrics using things his mum said about him in her blog.. It's a heartbreaking song, but perfect tribute. I'm crying now just thinking about it..

Sleepy86 · 30/11/2023 23:00

Nan's Song - Robbie Williams. Was played at my Nana's funeral and gets me every time
