Which songs make you cry?

I just listened to Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine, and I remember they played it in Coronation Street when Aidan Connor took his own life. I know it's just a soap but it was heartbreaking and a 23 year old girl from my local area took her own life earlier this year, it just made me think of her.
There are other songs which have the same effect, interested to hear about any other songs that have this effect on people!

Ellie Goulding - How long will I love you.

I heard it today and just started crying. I think it's a beautiful song.

Yes, that one too. Tenuous claim to fame - EG and I are fellow alumni (from different years) along with Alan Davies.

Dance with my father - Luther Van Dross. My Dad died in September so still far too raw for me!

SaraBarca1 · 30/11/2023 23:17

Elvie Shane - My Boy

A song about the love between a step-dad and step-child, I never believed I'd find someone who would actually really care about my child and this song really gets me in the heart

alloutofcareunits · 30/11/2023 23:18

Numb by Linkin Park, particularly the lines "tired of being what you want me to be" and "every step that I take is another mistake to you" make me think of how my daughters partner felt when he took his own life, unable to cope with the expectations of people. He was 24, tragic.

Paintmybathroom · 30/11/2023 23:18

White Wine in the Sun - Tim Minchin.

I have it on my xmas playlist and I cry every time it comes on.

Eyesopenwideawake · 30/11/2023 23:20

Cry for help by Rick Astley and an amazing backing choir.

Something inside so strong by Labi Sifri.

And Sometimes you can’t make in on your own by U2 for Bono’s father.

‘I just called to say I love you’ by Stevie Wonder.

Not because I like it. Quite the opposite, in fact. But because Stevie Wonder is a bona fide musical genius, yet this ghastly, nauseating saccharine ditty is the song for which he is best known by a mainstream audience in the U.K. And that’s a small tragedy.

Spendysis · 30/11/2023 23:30

I’ll never love again by lady gaga the film made me cry it’s such a beautiful song and it was played at my bil funeral earlier this year who we lost suddenly aged 60 to a heart attack we had to switch off his life support as he was brain damaged. His wife did want hymns so this was played instead the church was packed with his ex army colleagues his biker friends and his truck driver friends and there was not a dry eye in the church

Circlingthesun · 30/11/2023 23:31

Run- snow patrol- it was playing when my best friend got on her train to her new town and we had to say goodbye

The power of love- Frankie goes to Hollywood

The show must go on- Queen- cos it makes me sad that Freddie Mercury's life didn't go on

Amazing grace- sung it at too many funerals

mafsafanuk · 30/11/2023 23:32

Slipping through my fingers by Abba and Keep your head up by Ben Howard.

methodbehindmymadness · 30/11/2023 23:33

where have all the flowers gone joan baez

Mardyybum · 30/11/2023 23:35

I haven’t been able to bring myself to listen to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd since we played it as my dad was carried out of our family home by the undertaker after losing his battle with brain cancer. Even typing this I’m welling up thinking about the song. If it comes on the radio I immediately switch over.

Also Bigger Than the Whole Sky by Taylor Swift - I first heard it as I was having a miscarriage with our second pregnancy and the words were so relatable at that time.

For the classical fans, Schubert’s Der Lindenbaum is a real three-hanky job. (It’s possible to look up versions with English subtitles as well).

Schubert: Winterreise, D.911 - 5. Der Lindenbaum

@cafenoirbiscuit WYWH is such an emotional song. Reminds me of my late dad so I struggle with that one too (not particularly because of the words or meaning behind it but he was a big PF fan)

beautifulbrothers · 30/11/2023 23:41

In Dreams by Roy Orbison

I always had an emotional response to the song, then I watched a documentary about his life and it makes me even more emotional because I think of him having lost his children. I don't know how he ever coped with that tragedy.

Then I listened to Soul Music (amazing Radio 4 series) and - I think - Chris Mason listened to it in the car with his dad on the way to uni. So now both stories make me cry. Double whammy of emotion. 😭
