If I ruled the world...

mambojambodothetango · 30/11/2023 19:23

I regularly catch myself saying, 'If I ruled the world...' and then state the law/policy that I would enforce. I can't be the only one who does this. My three most cited things are:

Carers to be paid fairly for the job they do. Then we'd have no shortage and better care for an ageing population. (Applies to nurses, TAs etc but lack of Carers is going to become a huge problem and it's going to get worse).

Dog licences to be brought back in and you only get one when you've passed stringent tests on training and picking up poo.

Ministers will only be allowed to head up government departments when they have worked in that field for a good proportion of their life. They must know what they're talking about to be able to make decisions.

What are yours? (Semi-lighthearted... obviously world peace, equality, access to clean water and healthcare, etc. would come ahead of these).

There would be some kind of law against delivery companies saying they tried and failed to deliver your stuff when you were IN THE HOUSE THE WHOLE TIME.

Dogknowsbest · 30/11/2023 19:31

Everyone re-taking their driving test after 10 years. The number of people who drive badly is ridiculous.

Love the thread.
There would be a mansion tax - the current stamp duty banding is just silly in this country. Low or average waged citizens get the brunt whilst the rich stay rich.

That money could go to people who need it - like nurses, doctors, emergency response staff etc or could go into more public housing and get homeless people off the streets.

Aria999 · 30/11/2023 19:45

Also, part time and flexible jobs would be the norm and everyone would have access to free childcare.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 30/11/2023 19:59

I do this, I used to keep a list on the fridge 😁

Agree entirely about dogs. Keep them on leads unless in a designated dog park-type area.

I'm not sure how we could democratically elect the right set of ministers for all the departments if they have to have appropriate work experience, but I like this idea.

MPs not to take other paid work, their staff to be trained admin people, not their wife and kids.

Taxation to be much, much fairer. Abolish the monarchy. Have a national maximum, as well as minimum, wage.

mambojambodothetango · 30/11/2023 20:06

Love all of these so far! Keep them coming!

  • Ban corruption
  • Make public transport free at the point of use and more widespread & frequent
  • Actually invest in the population (properly sort out & fund healthcare/make universities free to attend/make council housing the default rental stock/make childcare affordable)

Brilliant.

And does the unicorn of peace accomplish all that?

Pinkcappucino · 30/11/2023 20:40

Carers allowance to be increased and not to be a taxable benefit.

UC 2 child limit to be scrapped

CB limit to be calculated on household income

under UC one parent (if they choose to) able to be a sahm till youngest is age 5 rather than the current system of pushing all into work (the ‘norm’ shouldn’t be that everyone works but that everyone has choice)

cabinet to be comprised of those with experience in whatever role they are given (eg education minister should have a background in teaching / education)

Maybe a designated island that was only female.

DuesToTheDirt · 30/11/2023 20:53

Some holiday & leisure themed orders here.

Firstly, all you other people are going to have to go away less so that everywhere is less busy for me. Then I can have some spontaneity back in my holidays.

  • No attractions will be so busy that I have to book in advance, or get in a queue at opening time, to be sure of getting in
  • And when I do get in I won't be craning my neck to see past all the other tourists
  • Ditch dynamic pricing, and ditch discounts for advance booking. Let's keep things simple. Even English Heritage are now charging different prices for different days of the week
  • I want to rock up at hotels and get a room without prebooking. Or, I want to find a self-catering cottage a couple of days in advance
  • Same for eating out
  • And if I go by public transport, for f*ks sake let's sort the trains out. I want to have a 99% chance of my booked train leaving roughly on time and arriving roughly on time, and with no stupid complex pricing. In fact, with much cheaper pricing.

I would agree. I land with full matriarchy where women would have the only voting right and property rights. Also polyandry would be legal.
I do think that the society would function better.

thistimelastweek · 30/11/2023 21:03

All of the foregoing plus...

...men should never be half-naked in public unless on the beach.

Well no, as we could only get unicorns through GM and most people would be against that. Besides, how would you get a bridle on a unicorn? Also they would be uninsurable due to the amount of people accidentally loosing an eye when trying to give them an apple.

Sumerian · 30/11/2023 21:07

Id completely revamp housing. The stress of buying & selling in England is ridiculous, surely there must be a way for it not to take months and months with the potential for it all to collapse at the last second due to gazumping, or a different part of the chain breaking, or whatever.

I would also build masses and masses of good quality council housing. Enough to take the heat out of the rental market. Ensuring that everyone who needs a home can have one without sacrificing 70% of their salary on rent.

Ohhh, and whilst im on my power'trip I'd ban the sugar tax. Bring back proper ribena!

YoongiMarryMe · 30/11/2023 21:09

Men would be banned for whistling in public. It’s always men.Stop your tuneless whistling in Tesco where I can’t escape it even from aisles away!

There'd be serious consequences that I haven’t quite worked out yet.

shellyleppard · 30/11/2023 21:13

Teenager children should pick up anything they leave on the floor/ tidy up after themselves!!!! Mother of two and I'm now not putting anything away that they leave lying about. If they can't find it......tough patooties!!!! 😁😂

Tulipsroses · 30/11/2023 21:22

To fight the housing problems:
I would abolish planning laws.
You have a choice of 100 pre approved house designs. File an online form informing your local authority and of you go.
Every young family with kids would receive a piece of land measuring 20mx20m. With electricity, gas, sewer and water supply in the street. They can go to the bank put the plot as a deposit and receive the funds to build the house or they can sell the plot.
This policy would solve the housing crises within the next 5 years, would give a double digit economic growth.

Interesting idea. Love all these utopian visions.

Yes! And any political party bod on here, take note, without it, you are storing up problems for the future by not doing it.

If the magic money tree that shook so violently during covid needs a good shake, so be it.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 30/11/2023 21:59

Music books will only be spiral bound so they stay open on the music stand.

MrsTopaz · 30/11/2023 22:33

Politicians must have expenses signed off by an independent jury of people… chosen in much the same way as jury duty. They wouldn’t know the politicians name or party, they would just make judgement on the application and then either allow or disallow each one. (Fed up with hearing ridiculous expenses that someone somewhere signed off on!).

MrsTopaz · 30/11/2023 22:35

cycle helmets for all cyclist on roads.. or if caught without one they need to spend 15 hours working unpaid as HCA in brain injury unit.

Bimblepops · 30/11/2023 22:40

All coats/jackets/outerwear would HAVE to have some reflective stripes on, and all school uniforms would have to be colourful and feature reflective materials.
Dark clothing, especially on school kids is so dangerous in the autumn and winter when they’re walking to and from school, let alone on the idiot adults walking in the middle
of the road when it’s dark

MrsTopaz · 30/11/2023 22:42

All desk users to have the option to have sit to stand desk/part bike desk so they can cycle whist working or small treadmill under standing desk to walk. All meetings to be max of 55 mins.
massive database where those who enjoy activity can be paired with those who want to do more. They’d need to be geographically close and matched on exercise they want to do.. like a big free buddy system to help encourage those who want to do more to get a helping start.
