I regularly catch myself saying, 'If I ruled the world...' and then state the law/policy that I would enforce. I can't be the only one who does this. My three most cited things are:

Carers to be paid fairly for the job they do. Then we'd have no shortage and better care for an ageing population. (Applies to nurses, TAs etc but lack of Carers is going to become a huge problem and it's going to get worse).

Dog licences to be brought back in and you only get one when you've passed stringent tests on training and picking up poo.

Ministers will only be allowed to head up government departments when they have worked in that field for a good proportion of their life. They must know what they're talking about to be able to make decisions.

What are yours? (Semi-lighthearted... obviously world peace, equality, access to clean water and healthcare, etc. would come ahead of these).

All dresses would have pockets.

The gender pay gap would not exist.

Monthly duvet days would be mandatory in all sectors.

Anyone who plays anything from their phone out loud on public transport, or through headphones but at a volume that is not contained by the headphones will be given an instaneous £50k fine and a one year ban from public transport. No exceptions.

Christmas decorations may go up from the start of Advent but cannot be brought down before 6 January. This law applies to council, commercial and domestic properties. You put them up for Christmas then they stay up for the 12 days of Christmas.

OP literally everything you have said I say regularly, nothing changes though.

For housing, I'd have government control of some kind.

I'm not sure how this could be done, but affordability is declining rapidly, and becoming skewed by inheritances rather than salaries. Maybe control prices, so that the average house in each area couldn't be more than, say, 4x the average salary in that area. Or, the government buys up all the housing stock and then sells/buys at set prices, rather than have private sales, with costs spiralling.

When you try to interfere with market forces you will create shortages. That's what is happening now there is a demand for more houses but because of red tape supply cannot keep up. So I would abolish planning system all together.
For the families that will never jump on the property ladder because its impossible to save for a deposit i would give this deposit in a form of land. There is plenty of unused greenfield land which the government can give away or buy at the dirt cheap agricultural rate and assign planning rights.

On to what I would do:

All non nutritious food to be banned except chocolate and some alcoholic drinks and they are rationed. Everyone would reap the benefits of good health, mental as well as physical. Strongly believe healthy people would make healthy choices about everything and would be nicer to each other.

Every square foot of land that can be planted on is planted on. Hugh FW proposed similar some years ago, wish it could take off.

V controversial but one child policy done as humanely as possible. 8 billion people and increasing is what's killing the planet.

I'd ban all alarms. They annoy beyond reason and nobody takes any notice anyway! Especially true if you are in the house when your alarm is going off! After an hour of wailing sirens at unbearable volume I knocked on neighbours for....they were unaware. Electrical fault, apparently.

No, men must retake ever year, women every 10 years!
Furthermore, any man who criticises a woman's driving will be subject to 10 years of earning what the average woman earns!
