I suppose it was a long time coming but so sad especially at this time of the year. What a life he had. His wife was totally devoted to him. God speed.

Yes, thinking about what this song will sound like now. He has been so ill for so long though

CurrentHun · 30/11/2023 14:11

Aww no. I am really sorry to see this.

AnnieRich · 30/11/2023 14:15

He wrote some beautiful songs.

Deathraystare · 30/11/2023 14:15

Shame but must admit I am surprised he survived so long.

Topseyt123 · 30/11/2023 14:18

I am sad to hear this, although I agree that it had been coming for a long time.

I think Fairytale of New York will now seem like a tribute to both Kirsty McColl and Share McGowan.

coxesorangepippin · 30/11/2023 14:21

Fairytale of New York will be getting another tokay today

Rip Shane

CreationNat1on · 30/11/2023 14:25

He was approaching 66 years, given the extreme addiction he suffered from, it surprising he lived as long as he did, albeit with limitations for the last 10 years or so.

A sad life in general.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/11/2023 14:32

I'm listening to The Pogues while I'm working today.

RIP Shane

Pinkpinkpink15 · 30/11/2023 14:37

Sad.

it's strange how these deaths feel like a loss of talent, even though the 'talent' was lost a long time ago.

😢😢😢

EachandEveryone · 30/11/2023 14:50

It’s because when are we going to see a good Irish sort of band again? I mean I know I sound old but none of the music today is going to make a mark on the world is it? I’m so glad I have the 79s/80’s and 90’s to look back on as my growing up music.

Flogging Molly are good, i recommend if you haven't heard them. My family also love the Saw Doctors.
SM was a legend, albeit one that was very lucky to live as long as he did. I really hope Fairytale of New York gets to no 1 this Xmas.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/11/2023 15:15

The first single I ever bought was The Irish Rover. Woolworths, 1987, I was 12.

(I was a strange child, I never liked the same music as everyone else!)

I love the Saw Doctors. I was supposed to see them last week but my broken foot hasn't healed well enough. I was gutted

DJSteves · 30/11/2023 15:18

Fontaine's DC are a good recent Irish band, but I've always had a soft spot for SM and The Pogues. The man has a real way with words

Abhannmor · 30/11/2023 15:27

The Pogues were very important to 2nd generation Irish too. They punked folk music up a bit. When I saw them in the 80s the audience was full of young ppl in Arsenal and Celtic tops . Lots of English accents and a fair sprinkling of black and Asian kids. And although Shane was a bit em, incoherent, it didn't matter because 5000 people were singing every word. Rainy Night in Soho is his masterpiece I think.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dilis.

RIP Shane .😥

MumblesParty · 30/11/2023 15:41

I really hope that as a tribute to Shane and Kirsty, the bloody media might play the proper lyrics of the song this year.

cardibach · 30/11/2023 15:47

I second @jimjomjamboree ’s suggestion of Flogging Molly.
Gutted about Shane though.

Coyoacan · 30/11/2023 15:47

Oh what a loss, I loved his music

Clawdy · 30/11/2023 15:50

Always feel sad watching Fairytale of New York, but it will be so moving this year - that dance scene at the end......

Lets hope so!

idontlikealdi · 30/11/2023 15:52

My mum and dad played the Pogues all the time when I was a kid in the 80s. I can see my dad's vinyl covers in my minds eye. I've only just realised today he was born in Pembury and not Ireland. My mum felt a very strong link to him (Irish).

Although not a surprise it's still a sad loss.

May you get your heaven before the devil knows you're dead Shane.
