Best Christmas TV of all time?

This Christmas I plan to basically hibernate with the pup and have a quiet one. I’ve got a list of books to read, but I’m thinking about what I can watch. So what are all of your must watch TV shows/specials to watch at this time of year?

I’ll get things started with Inside No.9 - The Devil of Christmas, and the Father Ted and League of Gentleman Christmas specials. Oh and Ghost Stories for Christmas too, of course

Vicar of Dibley Christmas lunch episode and Mr Bean! Love a bit of 90s tv 😂

ChungkingPineapple · 29/11/2023 13:49

Oh yes, 90s sitcoms ruled! Which reminds me all of the One Foot in the Grave specials are great!

I watch the Christmas episodes of lots of comedy series during December, everything from Peep Show to Porridge! My favourite is the Steptoe & Son Christmas episode and The Office two-parter.

I’ll also be watching Elf again this year, because I love it.

The Mezzotint (last year’s MR James ghost story) was brilliant.

I haven’t liked the more recent ones as much but I have all the classic ones on DVD so they’ll be getting an airing and I’ll give the new one a try.

The Muppets Christmas Carol!

No hate please but I hate the Muppets! People are usually in a state of shock when I reveal this, ha.

The Royle Family Christmas specials
Blackadder's Christmas Carol
Arthur Christmas
Mr Bean's Christmas
Tudor Christmas documentary with Ruth Goodman
Family Guy Christmas specials

are my favourites every year!

sprigatito · 29/11/2023 14:06

I can't bear the muppets either!

HippyChickMama · 29/11/2023 14:08

If you like Christmas horror, one of the Tales from the Crypt movie stories is a Christmas one, not sure if it's streaming anywhere as I have the DVD, but I watch that and Black Christmas (1974) every year. Also Krampus for a bit of comedy horror. My other favourite Christmas specials:
All the Royle Family ones
Bottom
Smith and Jones Homemade Christmas Video
Gavin and Stacey (both)
Motherland
Peep Show
Blackadder Christmas Carol
Two Doors Down

I always think, no one would find them funny if they weren’t puppets and I’m not persuaded because they are but we seem to be in a minority.

Scrooge, the musical with Albert Finney and so many other famous faces. Cracking tunes too.

SuitYouSir · 29/11/2023 14:18

South Park Mr Hankey episode 💩

Dinneronmybfpillow · 29/11/2023 14:20

There's an episode of Family Guy we watch every year, and sing from a lot. My 'letter to Santa' always ends with "lemon pledge" 😁

Yes it was great!

I remember watching The Ghosts of Oxford St at Christmas and it's always stuck with me. History, punk, Happy Mondays, The Pogues (and I think Sinead O'Connor), panto - it's all there! Lush, sinister and atmospheric

Where can you watch the Bottom special?

peachescariad · 29/11/2023 14:25

The Royle Family - The new sofa

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 29/11/2023 14:25

The Office Christmas Specials. Watch them every year and always cry when Tim and Dawn finally kiss!

Also the US Office Christmas ones have a few gems, especially the one where Dwight dresses as the Bellinickel.

I have it on DVD but I think it usually pops up on UK gold in December if you have access to that. Might even be on their streaming service.

A Child's Christmases in Wales.

It's a nod to the Dylan Thomas work, starring Ruth Jones. It's a gentle look at an extended family over a few years at Christmas.

I'm not sure where it is being broadcast atm but if you can find it it is worth it.

Verv · 29/11/2023 14:35

It's not TV per se but Die Hard has to be on my Christmas list.
