Mother in Laws

Or is it Mothers in Law? 🤨 (I think it is)

Anyway, inspired by a comment from @Teambyron on the Lakeland thread -

Does anyone actually like their mother in law?

I honestly do love mine. And I know the feeling is reciprocated because she has always maintained that if me and DH ever split up, she’d keep me over him 🤭

Please share your perspective if you are a MiL! How do you feel about your DiL or SiL?

I like mine! Kind, non judgemental and likes gin.
She’s always made it clear she is on our team.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/11/2023 20:37

Nope- never really connected and seeing what a shit grandma she is sealed the deal!

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/11/2023 20:38

It is mothers in law.

I hated my first. Loved my second. They both died.

My current mother in law is an absolute angel and I love her. My ex MIL was a vile selfish piece of shit and I am in no way sorry that she is no longer with us.

dontgobaconmyheart · 28/11/2023 20:45

She won't though, OP 😉

Not technically a MIL as I'm unmarried but have had the same partner for 16 years since I was 18. I'm indifferent to mine. We don't see her often and I'd say when we do I am essentially fulfilling an obligation, she isn't someone I would be spending any time with at all if she weren't my DP's parent. It's sometimes enjoyable seeing her when a good time is being had in the broader sense but we're quite different people, don't realistically know each other in any meaningful sense and I'm fine with that, I do my best to be polite and that's that. I'd not say I dislike her and I certainly bear her no ill will or anything approaching it - we of course would step in willingly if she required help and so on.

DP sees and speaks to her much more than I do but I wouldn't say they're very close either. In the past if there has been a disagreement stemming from her - she can be difficult and has some very outdated views that form no part of our household - he's always made clear that it's not acceptable, he won't be taking her side and she isn't welcome to visit unless she keeps those types of things to herself.

Brefugee · 28/11/2023 20:46

Mothers in law. 😀
I loathed mine. So did some of her own children.
My DH loves his and it was his suggestion to bring her to live with us if she wants to (ancient wizened widow woman he calls her)

Littlegoth · 28/11/2023 20:46

I love mine. She’s wonderful. She’s my mum now 😂

Brummymumma · 28/11/2023 20:49

I never got on with my mil. Now ex mil thankfully.

oldestmumaintheworld · 28/11/2023 20:51

For complicated family reasons I've had three mothers in law (I know). One was lovely, kind and motherly. One was brilliant and I loved her. And one was a teeny bit .... and we were completely different. And she was a Tory!

Sexnotgender · 28/11/2023 20:52

Both MILs were lovely.

Both FILs were weapons grade arseholes.

MilkChocolateCookie · 28/11/2023 20:53

My MIL is a very difficult woman. Her husband and son would (and do) say the same, so it's not just the MIL / DIL relationship.

Pinkpinkplonk · 28/11/2023 20:53

Mines a bitch

AnnaMagnani · 28/11/2023 20:53

I've met people who like theirs more than their own mothers.

DH is quite keen on his Wink
Me, not so much.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 28/11/2023 20:53

We didn't get along to begin - it was my fault, as a newly-wed.

Then we got along fine.

Now we don't get along so well anymore - it's her fault, as a retiree with too much time on her hands.

Whereisautumn · 28/11/2023 20:54

God no, I feel relieved I won't have to deal with her now since ending my marriage. She is delighted of course.

RandomQuestionOfTheDay · 28/11/2023 20:54

I like her just about as much as DH likes her (ie not much).

LeggyLegsEleven · 28/11/2023 20:54

Lots of my friends seem to like theirs. Unfortunately it wasn’t the same for me. She was miserable and for some reason thought that somehow she was in charge of me and got to tell me what to do. I don’t like being told what to do, I do what I want. Hilariously she complained about her MIL being controlling and telling her what to do!
I won’t be like that.

Iamme2023 · 28/11/2023 20:55

I absolutely loved mine and was heartbroken when she passed away

DelightfulDoris · 28/11/2023 20:55

Both mine are /were lovely. My ex MIL so completely different to my current. But both great in their own ways!

Still stop and chat to my ex In Laws regularly when I see them walking into the town. And my ex H does same to my mum.

NowNumber5 · 28/11/2023 20:56

Arrgh! I knew it. Kicking myself I didn’t correct the title at the time and now I can’t, it’s bugging me so muchM

@dontgobaconmyheart Don’t burst my bubble, please let me carry on being deluded 😆

I love mine dearly. But in small doses. She can get a bit much sometimes, but always from a place of love.

Tbf, I prefer my own mother in the smallest doses possible also. And anyone who isn't my husband.

I think I've just realised I'm antisocial - I'm OK with that.

bruffin · 28/11/2023 21:00

I loved mine, she and my DM became really good friends and they used to go on holiday together without us!

She was a lovely lady and in her will thanked her son's for finding such lovely DILs and lefts us a small sum each

Sadly we lost MIL and DM within a year of each other, they are truly missed

Catapultaway · 28/11/2023 21:01

Love mine, wish she lived closer. She dotes on her grandchildren, and they adore her.

Amchoor · 28/11/2023 21:01

I like mine. She can be a bit daft and does think the sun shines out of her son's arse 😂 but she's a very lovely lady and a very good grandma. And she's been there for me while my own mum has been very poorly.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 28/11/2023 21:07

Mine died 4 months after we got married, my step mother in law who is her sister, has not spoken to me since DH’s funeral 4 years ago, neither has my FIL
