Do you have an SUV? Which one, and go you recommend it?

Were about to replace our ancient Vauxhall Zafira. Will get an SUV style car, 1-3 years old, but not sure which...
I hired a VW Tiguan for the day recently and loved it, so comfy, but we probably need a bigger boot.

What do you have? Do you recommend it? Particularly keen to hear about Land/Range Rover. Or anything really.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Ford Kuga. Best car I have ever owned.

DejaVoodoo · 27/11/2023 14:50

Thanks @Frenchfancy .

We looked at the Kuga at the weekend and I really liked it.

I have a Vauxhall Mokka SUV, it is lovely to drive and being a diesel has great range and economy. Unfortunately I could not recommend that you buy one because the parts availability is very poor. My car is now off the road because Vauxhall say the part needed to fix the transmission is on "back order" and refuse to say when it will be available. I have been waiting nearly 4 months!

Skoda Karoq. Faultless.

Subaru Forester. We love it. This is our second Forester. The first went 190k miles.

They're very roomy, fun to drive and bulletproof reliable.

Applebeard · 27/11/2023 14:56

@Kryten1958 my only experience with a Mokka was a (brand new) hire car that wouldn't go in a straight line, or stop without 20 minutes notice. Put me right off them!

Applebeard · 27/11/2023 14:57

Skoda Yeti is another recommendation. Last one made was in 2017 so not new. Our 2015 4x4 was the best car I've ever owned.

mrssunshinexxx · 27/11/2023 14:58

I have a landrover discovery 5 and love it

Pjmaskmummy · 27/11/2023 15:00

Vauxhall Mokka is an absolutely no no. Small inside and boot and just a bit all round rubbish would never have one again.

Kia sportage on the other hand. Great size inside and boot. Lovely to drive. Good customer care and warranty.

I was also completely against diesel but ended up going for one as the one I wanted was diesel and I'm a complete convert. Only slightly more expensive at the pump and last so much longer than unleaded.

I would never buy another Range Rover, the longest we went without an issue was about 6 weeks. It makes me queasy thinking how much money was wasted on repairs for that car. I know people with defenders and they’ve never had an issue so I’m not sure if it’s just Range Rover that are unreliable.

Octavia64 · 27/11/2023 15:02

Not sure if it's an SUV but highly recommend Volvo xc90.

Ours has lasted 14 years so far, parts are not too expensive and it's been a great car. Driven abroad, carried drum kits and kids to uni, and takes 7 people.

WichenWick · 27/11/2023 15:03

Peugeot 3008 - would not recommend. We loved our first one so replaced it with another demo model from the dealer when our 3 yrs were up. That car was jinxed - so many problems including a complete engine rebuild, and it still wasn't right. We changed it early via the dealer for another 2020 plate. That was ok for a few months but now we're having electrical problems. I'll never have a Peugeot again.

Colinswheels · 27/11/2023 15:06

Can recommend the Seat Ateca, although I suspect the boot size is similar to the Tiguan.

Thosepurpleberries · 27/11/2023 15:06

Had a Discovery 5 till it was stolen, along with 5 others in the area that night. Have replaced it with a Volvo XC90, which we love.

Twiglets1 · 27/11/2023 15:10

Have a Tiguan and really like it - the boot is massive so can’t really imagine it not being big enough! However, there is a bigger model you could consider, the Touran.

DejaVoodoo · 27/11/2023 15:13

Thanks for all your comments so far. Looks like I'll be giving the Mokka a swerve!
I've gone off the Disco now, too, as it seems they're unreliable. Shame, I always wanted one!

Looking at the other models with interest... 😊

Kuga! Got a humongous boot!

NosnowontheScottishhills · 27/11/2023 15:16

Mazda CX3 with the bigger engine ?2l. Ive driven every conceivable car and it’s bloody brilliant it’s got excellent road holding friends with other makes of SUVs often comment on it when they are passengers. It is essential for where I live, it’s exceedingly reliable it’s never broken down currently down 90k + miles and it’s 7 years old, and I’m getting just over 41 miles to the gallon which I thought was not great but in fact I was told recently by a car mechanic that it’s very good for the size of the engine/weight of car.
Most car mechanics I talk to really rate Mazdas saying they are very reliable.

I'll take another look then... I think I found the boot modest on the Tiguan because it had the cover thing on... I always take those off because I have a big dog!

DH has a BMW X1 and we love it. It's a dream to drive. Plenty of boot space plus an extra hidden bit underneath.

Can comfortably fit the four of us in plus luggage for a self catering holiday. Kids older teens and have plenty space in the back seat, with arm rest, cup holders etc.

NosnowontheScottishhills · 27/11/2023 15:24

The boots enough for me I can easily get two dogs in it or one dog crate for a small dog and still and carry on suitcase. My friend has a MOKKA I would say the boot is the same size.
The Mazda CX5 obviously has a bigger boot but I felt it was a bit of a bus but then I was used to driving a very small car before I looked at the CX3/5 and often have to negotiate and park on very narrow roads with double parking for work.

Skoda Karoq. Faultless.

Seconded. I'd marry mine if I could.

eurochick · 27/11/2023 15:25

BMW x3. It's a great car. Really comfortable, lots of space and so easy to drive. My only grumbles are that the petrol tank is fairly small for a car of its size and it is quite wide. But I would still buy another one tomorrow.

PilatesPeach · 27/11/2023 15:27

Honda CRV is great.

I would not call a BMW X1 an SUV personally it is not much bigger than a hatchback - I had one as a courtesy car - low driving position same as a standard car and the slope of the tailgate meant my dog crate would not fit in it which it does in my CRV.

Get an auto OP.

ImNunTheWiser · 27/11/2023 15:28

Honda CRV, superb cars all round and like a Tardis. Had two so far (and an HRV). Our first one we used to get three huge Labradors in the boot no problem.
